  • 3 weeks later...

Covid has thankfully left the building, but I've lost two weeks welding on this heap.

Paneled up the front end, used the bonnet from the doner car as it's pretty decent, the old one was a repainted red that my nephew and his pals had used as a trampoline sometime in the past.

The wings are off my other golf, not sure if I'll use these ones yet,but for now they will suffice in lining things up.

Then it was onto fixing the windscreen surround.

That took me three days, was knackered after the first day,but gradually felt better.

Floorpans next.

Drivers floorpan next.

This one needed the most work.

20230215_114307.thumb.jpg.7a35e3fb8380ef3b23ef55473c961e58.jpg

Managed to get quite a chunk from the doner car.

20230215_125448.thumb.jpg.ec51a9c9d8382693c8b2fb0f6492f349.jpg

Chassis rail needed a minor repair too.

20230215_155259.thumb.jpg.a99a44d193d7ab0758428bc57e64d063.jpg

That done, time to tackle the rest.

20230216_122409.thumb.jpg.debd3c550d7c168e4111baffda4577d6.jpg

Next was the front corner.

20230222_112650.thumb.jpg.8d25e9311a3b8fabff289b9272faf120.jpg

Underneath this is a jacking point.

20230222_113908.thumb.jpg.374390d804f765ad165bc4041e794483.jpg

So I chopped out a bigger section to see the condition of what lay beneath.

I had thought I'd have to repair this from underneath, but the rust was very localised,so it could be repaired from the top, result!

20230222_113912.thumb.jpg.82446dafa6ff75e1516332a648d89ee4.jpg

Ground the rot out then fashioned a repair patch and welded it in.

20230222_122437.thumb.jpg.cdb6a517ccaf95c951b44040f6a4bb26.jpg

Then welded the floor section back in.

20230222_123643.thumb.jpg.602c4105043e11142f1a4bfdb4e2e575.jpg

Then make up another patch.

20230222_142829.thumb.jpg.9a943275f385992c84d421a3f03edf85.jpg

Then weld it in(was a bit of Vauxhall Viva once upon a time)

20230222_151846.thumb.jpg.da1e47168be7b98bec037cbc5beece6e.jpg

Time to make up a few more repairs then clean up the welds.

Spare wheel well.

Rotted around the retaining bolt to hold the spare, and also the fuel tank strap that is on the underneath.

20230227_131829.thumb.jpg.e3b8fe46b973c756b890b6ff233c46a3.jpg

Mmmmmm,rusty.

Fortunately the Mk3 I bought recently had a reasonably decent spare wheel well, unfortunately the tank strap bracket has rusted and been plated up before.

20230227_105802.thumb.jpg.3eca649ead9ac8315f7275a7e03eb3fc.jpg

Time to chop out the grot.

I was going to make several smaller patches, but decided to chop out as much as I could in one go.

20230227_153438.thumb.jpg.e76b7d0d296b2abece43b64272cffd25.jpg

Doner cut lined up.

20230227_153450.thumb.jpg.a19adad08380d42c7e612715f5a4a37f.jpg

Welded.

20230227_170210.thumb.jpg.3c23fafa50c6f893962f5439245d6418.jpg

Still got to do the tank strap bracket.

I left the old one on to maintain its position for the time being.

Next was to finish the fuel tank strap bracket.

First make up a patch for the top of the bracket.

20230228_145028.thumb.jpg.f81322d9e726581d9db951e13fd9d6c8.jpg

Then  drilled a hole in the panel and threaded a bolt all the way through the bracket and floor to preserve the location point, the original had this too,it doubled up as a drain hole.

20230228_161000.thumb.jpg.8f963e76edda8f5e83dd6e27e395edc8.jpg

Next I could remove the tank bracket.

Hmmm, needs a tickle of the welder.

20230301_114557.thumb.jpg.53d2db8ba1dfe5b677e1ec02c19837f8.jpg

The doner mk3 bracket was in worse shape.

20230301_114617.thumb.jpg.e537a7143c92cd3b162c17ed5b5bca85.jpg

But there was enough material between the two to make a useable one.

20230301_122643.thumb.jpg.87b555ce3dd2abbec27c4384c14a597e.jpg

So it was time to refit the fuel tank and double check everything still lined up.

20230301_124905.thumb.jpg.3220c6d6ece513c0752386a18676a90a.jpg

Time to weld it all in and clean back the welds.

20230301_163834.thumb.jpg.b578aa8abe88704d2294277396922056.jpg

Done.

Boot floor where it joins the rear panel next.

Next was the rear edge of the boot floor where it meets the rear panel.

The seam between them traps moisture with the inevitable result.

Rot.

Great.....

I needed a folded edge for the boot floor my metal folder isn't big enough to do the the fold in one go.

A rummage in my shed turned up this sill, for a mk1/2 Fiesta, but of surface rust but otherwise perfect!

20230302_115956.thumb.jpg.2d4821e6948ea71823f9d4f47addeec3.jpg

Chop chop, weld weld.

20230302_152007.thumb.jpg.a10d19fc6092d045f877246f3458fcf9.jpg

Despite it looking straight, there is a curve to the rear panel, so I had to slit the patch in a few places to suit.

20230302_152003.thumb.jpg.91035be8975dbacde2b8f0151df3b6a0.jpg

Time to make up the rear panel repair.

Bashed a groove into it with a bit of square section steel bar.

20230303_141821.thumb.jpg.bf2d28e077e4ef1c86b3b7221d108915.jpg

Trial fit.

20230303_154711.thumb.jpg.95b59214c338fc16dc1f4f052af67158.jpg

Weld.

20230303_163634.thumb.jpg.bcc80a701b7d03c07a520ebc00debda6.jpg

Removed rotten section.

Time to clean up the welds.

That's pretty much it for the main structural repairs.

Still a few more spots of rot that need attention,so I'm not done with the welder just yet, wonderful🙄.
