Gentle acceleration in regular driving.

The fuel gauge drops as the speedometer goes up...

That's cheating! Not your regular British Imperial Gallons. ;)

7.2 MPG in real money, then.

Either way it sucks the juice down. Under hard acceleration in first gear that drops even more.

Shame I still don't have the XJ40 Daimler Sovereign. Given a bit if whellie the lovely green LED displayed used to display about 5 mpg. Probably end up with a speeding ticket if I tried it for 10 miles.

Many moons ago I used to work for the Forestry Commission and I had the use of a 1978 LR 109 2.25 petrol as the weather was snowy. While I was using it there was a month long MPG check being done on all our vehicles, the petrol LR was expected to do 18.6 MPG. Driven gently on the ice and snow with an 80 mile commute most days but no off road use it averaged 10.3 MPG over the month. As an added bonus it went the journey at 9 years old because the chassis was crumbling...….

I no longer have my 2.9 Cosworth Scorpio, which absolutely refused to crack 20MPG, ever

So on that day I will win.

I sold the forum bike XJ6 as I couldn't better 18mpg on my commute, in the olden days I ran a turbo supra and didn't flinch at sub 20mg, but fuel was £2.50 a gallon and I was earning the same as I am now :(

I thought a low of 16mpg from my Volvo 960 was bad, but reading some of these replies...

Good lord. This might be my magnum opus ahead of my 3rd place at the work's go karting back in 2017.

I was getting <1mpg until I fitted the fuel tank seal.

12.3mpg imperial out of the factory. I suspect 10mog or less now.

if that counts then does REV get a shoe in?

on a more serious note, I seem to recall reading that it was either @xtriple with his (now Zels) jag that managed to get decimal point MPG's showing on the live display, and even managed to get it displaying "--MPG" at one point LOL

or someone with a Jag did that, here we go :) (might not of been with Zels jag looking at the context but ya get the idea!)

Back when I had one before, 1 mpg was easy getting, it to go blank and flash little lines at you, that took dedication! :)

I used to do a 7 mile commute in a 1984 Chevrolet Celebrity station wagon, with a 2.8 V6, column shift auto and a misfire.

Average mpg = 9.

I didn't keep it long....

The beloved Mk2 Golf GTI 16v returns 18 mpg when driven using vtec / time attack mode.

which is mostly all the time....

RX8 uses a gallon to start..

And the proceeds at a miserly 16mpg cruising.

Single is easily do-able.

Does it still live at Bridgnorth?

Might show my face ?

I should be in with a shout of a podium finish here, with a V12 Jaguar with a hyperactive kickdown actuator.

But the fuel gauge doesn’t work, and occasionally the odometer doesn’t either.

My daily drive V6 Freelander returning empeegees varying between 19 and 21*, is a comparative tree-hugger in this company.

*I'm sure it will do much less if I make an effort.

That was properly tidy. Think it was an Orvis. That 242 engine did have rather lot to cope with. Only 185bhp which was barely enough in the smaller cherokee xj, permanent 4wd, viscous fan and not to mention your right foot! ?
