Collected / Almera nonexciting progress and cleanup thread - MOT Fail joy

Just collected a car with ten mins notice. Got a phone call from a mate to say he’s leaving our work and did I want to buy his car that’s been sat.

So off I’ve gone today with no idea what it even is or how long it’s been stood - was pleasantly surprised

Looks in good nick, he’s a bit of a posh boy and literally used it to go to Asda in. Pulls out paperwork, battery flat, stood since June time.

Why is it stood?

He tried to jump it off with the leads on the wrong way round. Sparks aplenty apparently and then nothing. So he parked it up and didn’t bother having a go at a fix.

So, once it’s actually daylight, it’s electrical tracing time and see if I can find why it’s dead, suspect main fuse / a melted earth somewhere. I was expecting a mass of melted wiring but no actual visible signs of anything. The bay is really simplistic so tbh it should be ok to have a good inspect of the wiring and all the fuses.

Gonna throw a battery in it today hopefully, book it in for a test

Interesting start to a dour morning!

Couldn’t resist skipping my morning brew and bringing a battery up.

Under the bonnet.. clean air filter and new Halfords battery

Main fuse blown, could it be this simple?

Answer is.. yes! Bridged the main fuse with some welding rod and it fired right up.

So, book it right in for a test! All in all, 100 percent successful trip!

They’re dull but competent. Assuming it’s a 1.5 the gearboxes can be weak and they sometimes encounter timing chain issues but are on the whole reliable.

Have had a few in various states of repair and they’ve never failed to get me where I was going.

Well bonuses, tested the battery and it’s charging, found service history up to 61k and it’s got a knackered spring and engine light on.

Should hopefully be a quick fixer upper and back on the road.. it is a very generic car tho. Drove it round the car park a bit and it just ‘does car’ quite nicely.

And aircon? And E/W and remote central locking? AND A CUPHOLDER

We are in the future

That steering wheel should come with a biohazard warning. Looks pretty tidy though, I don't think I've ever seen one of these without being dented or having different coloured panels

That's exactly what they were and very good at it too.

I don't think they ever got the reputation they deserved for  "being a car" as they were just so forgettable.

A mate of mine had the Gti version for a bit too and I'd like to say it was amazing and quick and thrilling but, I can't. It was functional.

That steering wheel cover came off within five minutes and was frisbeed off the back of the multistorey. Probably the most excitement its had in its life.

Well bought! Another 53 reg Almera N16 owner!  ^_^

Now you can boast to your mates that your car has a 'curry hook' !!

What spec is it - E or S spec? Baser spec is the way to go imo. Those rotary heater controls look a lot more user friendly than the push button jobbies on mine.

Good work.  Mine was grim and the most expensive car to run I've ever had.

On the first post I had visions of this car being like that Corsa you tried to resurrect but i reckon you’ll be onto a winner with this one! I’ve got my fingers crossed for you.... but that didn’t work on the corsa so there’s no guarantee from this.

A freind of the wife's came round one day, probably about 2008.

She announced she had been car shopping and found her dream car.

We had to wait till the weekend to see it.

A late twenties manager type, big collection of shoes, what could it be?

MX5?

3 series or Audi convertible?

An Slk?

Something classic?

BINI?

NO.  NISSAN ALMERA!

Good luck fending off those lusting twenty somethings!

Tbh I'd not kick a 5 door almera that would do 45mpg+ out of bed.

Sometimes An Car is just what you need!

I used to build these. All assembled with the utmost care and attention.

Mmmmm 1.5. An engine size only found in Japanese cars for some odd reason.

Austin Maxi 1500 springs to mind but there could be more too.
