Because I think you get much more pleasure from tinkering/fettling/fully restoring (delete as appropriate) old cars than you do actually driving round in them. You'd be bored stiff if that Midget had just been fine on arrival.

True but the Midget was always supposed to be a project. A mechanical more than a bodywork, as I had enough bodywork project with the Dolomite.

I imagine up close that red one probably would be the same.

One thing working on these old wrecks is appreciating how many bodged up and badly restored examples are out there. Even more so when you've worked on your own cars up close and see similar at shows.

There was, from a distance, a nice looking red Midget at a local show. However up close I could see bits of uneven filler and misaligned panels that have been put into place in a rush. Like the A-post panel I went to a lot of trouble making sure it was flat and inline with the sill on mine, this had a dent in the middle of the panel and sticking out at the bottom.

Its certainly made me not want to buy another classic sight unseen, unless it was an absolute steal with the appreciation it'll need work.

So heartbreaking these were taken out of service in 2021. I don't give a shit about trains, and that was like the most enticing reason to visit the Isle of Wight (and I imagine for lots of others, too). I do wonder what possible reason was given for getting rid.

They were completely fucked, they were being kept running by cannibalising stock taken out of service. Spares were unavailable anywhere. A scheduled service can't be run on that basis.

Owned for 16 years but now 73 and my wife giving up driving means post-covid change of plan. Low use in past few years except recent holiday in Lancs. & Northumberland. This mainly home-maintained car has never let us down and has clocked up almost 250,000m.

And it's not like they were replaced with brand new models.
The ones they're using now are refurbished D78s from the 70s and 80s.

They look lovely right now, but give them 20 years and they'll look as dated as the old ones.

I got excited, but it's not the turbo.

“Bodywork is up and together “ rather than “ down and in pieces”…..

Spotted this on my morning dog walk.

Central Newport, near train station.  Seems cheap, could help with storage/collection if any interest.

A delightfully pogweaseled Civic was parked nearby, and I also saw a giffer driven dark grey/black E reg Mazda 323 hatchback pulling a substantial home-made trailer drive by.  Good times.

Rover 600 620 Diesel Spares/Repairs | eBay

'It recently had an mot and there isn't much in the way of rust'

Unless it was tested in about the last 15 minutes, the last MOT expired in June.

Anyhow, it's diesel and it's only £290 AND it's right on your doorstep @Iamgroot Good luck driving it home though, M8!

2005 54 Vauxhall Vectra 3.2i V6 24v GSi | eBay

It's the 3.2 which must be a bit of a laugh in these, as Omegas with the same motor didn't half go. It's only £995 and it's tested until January next year.  If Autoshite start doing 'citizens tests' then basically if you tick 'NO' next to 'Do you like this Vauxhall Vectra' then you should get deported to Rhyl.

Just looked at that "for a friend", I think it's too dire even for me! I'll take a picture of it for you when I drive past next week if it's where I think it is

Is that old garage still going there? I'm sure it was (just about) still operating when I last when past over 20 years ago now.

There were actually three at one point! One is still going (doing car repairs), one got knocked down and one closed but the pumps and office and that are still there, I'll try and get pics!
