That Megane does look like a lot of car for the money.

I really like them and they go like hell - it's just for how long.

Just stuck this on the Facebook page.

The exact Meg that Richard Hammond smashed into a Mondeo! Good excuse to watch the video again, still such a stunning design. I just love them :D

I have to admit that I also like these Meganes..had one as a long term rental when I was in Israel back in 2004~2005. It was also the most economical car out of all the cars that I drove (37MPG ave) and I wasn't hanging around most of the time.

How bad are they for gremlins?

3l 24v, thats engine I'd want in one of these, the cloth interior, I'm not so keen on.

£700ono seems reasonable, depending on rust/work needed.

*actual car may be less squished than the image.

Not half as bad as people make out. 52 plate cars (the very first) were the prime ones for misbehaving. Electric window failure and misbehaving key cards are really the worst you can expect from the electrical system now that everything (should have) been ironed out. Heard of a few cases of water ingress into the ECU though which causes them to ape shit!

I used to get a lift to work with a mate in his RenaultSport Megane. It was rapid for sure, he could scare the crap out of me if he wanted to. It was only three years old when he bought it and it quickly had to go back to the dealer for an electric window motor, and a coil pack to be sorted. After that thought it was pretty rock solid, he didn't drive it gently and it gave no further issues.

Prior to that, my mum had a three door 120dCI model. Not sure which one, had alloys and electric shizzle but Renault put those things on the entire range now. That too was seriously rapid, most motorway driving seemed barely over idle speed in 6th. She had a few trim issues, it didn't feel like the most carefully assembled car but it kept working for the three years she had it.

For the price they fetch these days I don't reckon they're bad cars, you can find better but you're going to pay more. Don't seem to have massive electrical gremlins, you just see a few that have succumbed to the council estate wheeltrims-and-parking-dings look.

How did anyone notice this? It's not mentioned in the listing (HPI clear!), was someone browsing Meganes and thought "hey, I recognise that entirely anonymous numberplate from brief segment on a five year old Top Gear".

Does the seller not know about it, or did he think this wasn't a good selling point?

Not my sort of thing, but may be of interest to Vauxhall fetishists.

It doesn't seem too bad a price, for a dealer

Those Tomoses are truly horrible. Plus I have four non-running mopeds already and the last thing I need is another.

Added to watch list.

At least he admits it's as rotten as a pear, but:

PLEASE NOTE: The engine was at some point rebuilt by Harry Mandelaris a well known Italian engine specialist. It has Weber carbs.

Well, thats ok then.

Early Kangoos are rapidly disappearing from the roads, they don't seem to last as well as Berlingos when they get to a certain age. I miss my 1998 one, it was previously used to transport animals on a smallholding and had the most revolting seats I've ever seen but had a superb engine and ran on fumes. Alas, the sills were like swiss cheese under the veneer of paint and it cost so much to get it through its MOT I sold it at a considerable loss.
