between about 1977 and the early 1990's it was policy that any vehicle 1963 *and* older being robbed of a number plate would be issued an A suffix "age" related plate regardless of age, this is why you see a lot of surviving vintage vehicles on A suffix plates

(Genuine A suffix vehicles fly under the radar because of this, only a few county councils actually issued A suffix plates in period, so its always fun when you spot a genuine one from period )
