Thought I was going to have to buy yet another MAF a few weeks ago.

A blast of carb cleaner and the car is like new again.

Don't drop or shock the MAF, nor touch the wires with anything other than a spray of carb cleaner.

My friend has a Xantia HDi 90 that he likes. He recently bought an HDi 110 spares car and wants to upgrade the 90 to 110 spec. What does he need to do other than swap the intercooler and gubbins over? Are the injectors different?

The basic engine is the same but it would probably be best to change the injectors over. The turbo is completely different. On the 90 it has a boost controlled wastegate whereas the 110 has a vacuum controlled wastegate which is controlled by the ECU via a solenoid valve on the r/h scuttle identical to the one that controls the egr valve. Also the gearbox is completely different, being much larger physically.

It can be done as a complete car is available but the wiring and ECU would need to be swapped as well.So at least a couple of days work.

The 110 is a big improvement over the 90 ,though.

I haven't dealt with HMRC in years, as I've more recently been dealing the Irish Revenue, but it's all EU and works out like this (having looked up HMRC bits):

Your goods will be taxed either depending on value of goods only, or fully landed cost (value of goods + shipping + insurance).

Tax is made up of the following, not all which will apply: [A) Customs Duty + B ) Excise Duty] and then on top of those two C) VAT. (Occasionally

Anti-Dumping Duty and/or Countervailing Duty are also imposed, but we won't worry about that)

A) Customs Duty, that'll be worked out depending on the TARIC code of the item.

B ) Excise Duty, don't really need to worry about that either as it's more for booze, fags, perfume & pez.

c) VAT, usually at standard rate of 20%.

To find out the Customs Duty, look up the TARIC code, I think a car rear leaf spring comes under 87 08 80 9900. and has a Customs Duty rate of 3.5%. Based on the fully landed cost, if the Customs Duty works out less than £9 it will be disregarded.

Given it that element was £16.35, I worked out (in reverse) that the fully landed cost: £467(!), and that doesn't tally with the VAT charged....

So looking at the VAT charge of £112.27, the FLC + Customs Duty = £561.35. Less 16.35 Customs Duty = £545 (From that I work out Customs Duty rate used was 3.0%) I find this odd, given that even under the other classification numbers for leaf springs https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff/headings/7320, the Customs Duty is 2.7% (?????)

Anyway, going back from £545 and given the supposed mix up, was the price including shipping, etc. 545 CAD?

If it was, then I can work out what it should of been...

Impressive reply! Thankyou.

The total price paid was 450 CAD. Included shipping etc.

Ok, going on that and looking here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/hmrc-exchange-rates-for-2016-monthly

You'll see that this months exchange rate used by HMRC is 2.0746 CAD to 1.0000 GBP

C$450 / C$2.0746 = £216.91

Now how much were the contents? If less than £135, then Customs Duty is waived and you just pay VAT @20% on the landed total. If greater than £135 then you get hit with Customs Duty and after adding that the dread VAT gets stuck on the lot.

If less than £135

£216.91

£ 43.39 VAT

£260.29

£ 8.00 Carrier's handling fee (Royal Mail).

£268.29 total.

If more than £135

£216.91

£ 6.51 (Customs Duty @3%, but as discussed before, it could be 3.5% or it could be 2.7%. All depends on the classification of the item)

As the CD is less than £9 it should be waived. Result should be in the same as above. You should be due back something like £128.62 - £43.39 = £85.23

It may not be exactly that figure, I don't know if HMRC do what the Irish Revenue do, which is at one stage in the calculation, they drop any cents off the figure and therefore do further sums base on whole figure, disregarding the cents, be it 1 or 99.

I still don't know how they started with around 545 though. They must have guessed or converted it into something else first?????

Actually, for future reference. Contact HMRC by email before buying something and find out what the duty rate/TARIC is. Then get the sender to put the description AND tariff code AND the currency code USD/CAD whatever on the customs declaration so it gets processed quicker as they won't be guessing, just checking it tallies.

I think some of the delay may have been due to an incomplete/incorrect declaration and they tossed it in the "look at it later" pile.

Does anyone have a pdf or download for a PSA MA gearbox. Got the bits I need and the bearings are in the freezer. Just need to know the best way to remove the casing.

Just ordered new drive shaft seals as knowing my luck I'd get it all back together and the bastard would leak like a sieve.

And any recommendations on Threadlock and gasket sealant?

When I did mine I didn't use a manual as it is fairly straight forward. The most awkward bit is getting the selector forks out and pulling it all apart in the correct order. You take the end casing and 5th gear off first. If you bought the kit it comes with all the seals and I just used a good silicon sealer sparingly on the joints. To change the bearings is a press job and you have to remove each gear from the mainshaft to do it. I had this done by the place that does the bearings as the blokes do them all the time and have the drifts and old sockets to hand. They also only charged me a drink for doing it. The bearings into the casings are an easy push fit but onto the shafts needs a press. Getting it back together can be very frustrating the worst bit is getting the selectors in right, they take some jiggling but it's worth it in the end. Good luck although you don't need the freezer room temp is fine.

If I run the xantia tank down, could use a wet vac to get the rubbishy bits out the bottom?

Would the veg/diesel fuck up the vac? It's a titan wetn dry one from screwfix

You would be better off going to one of those garages that you can hoover your car out by putting a £1 in the slot....

Yeah it would go kaboom!

Mostly veg oil so more worried about it clogging up VAC.

Would need to run it almost empty then go in through sender hole, not sure esso would be impressed by me doing that on their forecourt :-)

I'm looking to fit a couple of extra lights to me ke175 for night green laning . I have a couple of small spots that would mount fine but the ke is 6v so can't power off the bike . My thinking is to put a 12v sealed battery in the tool pack on the rear mudguard and run them off it . I only need about 3 hrs life and was thinking of using led bulbs .

Has anyone used led h1 or h3 bulbs ? Do they work with a decent pattern ?

Do the canbus safe ones ( all that seem to pop up in searches ? ) draw 55w still ?

How about a Pela pump to slurp out the remains? It would work with little particles suspended in veg/derv but it's only brake cable width pipe. Anything more than 3mm is going to block.

That's kind of what I'm using now and a bit of a pita to be honest . Locating battery packs and poor battery life are issues .

Oh and the poxy switches which cycle through off/dim/bright/ brightest / flashing .

A friend of mine has a Nissan Terrano

The back wheels locked up on him 3 times today as he was driving! Not braking, just normal driving.

I drove it and it was fine for me, no funny noises and I couldn't see anything amiss.

Any ideas??????

There's a thread over on reto rides, which I'm sure some welding genius posts to (bollox??) , I can't find it, i had it booked marked but that was on a old laptop. Anyone know what I'm on about?

possibly stripped a tooth off in the rear diff and the loose part is floating about occasionally jamming the crown wheel?

Terranofish should be RWD unless 4WD is selected, have you tried locking engaging 4WD, and locking/unlocking the rear diff lock if it has one, checking it all engages and works correctly then disengaging and making sure all have.

If its not transmission, and i'd check all transmission oil levels, then could it be a rear brake shoe coming unstuck and jamming inside the drum, as in Volvo V70/S60?

Sooooooooo...

I keep seeing references on here to HGVs being restricted and I was curious when did that happen and why?

I know I have been absent from those green and pleasant shores for some time now, but the last HGV speed memory I have was driving a rented transit towards Welsh Wales sometime in the late 80s.  I was going as fast as it could down a hill, doing about 90 and I had an artic right up my bunghole the whole way.

I've driven in the Ukay, Eirelandshire and Urop lots of time in the last 20 years but can't say I really took any notice of the  HGV speed.

The rigs over here don't seem to be restricted - on our cross country trip we found a rig that was pulling a decent speed and sat behind him - "big red" as I named him, took us through New Mexico and into Texas at a goodly 85 mph and perhaps a little more.

Also, would it be inappropriate to use this as an opportunity to build my cunt count for next years awards*?

I may have to nip* to Gravesend tomorro with the bike trailer to drop of a RD lc and bring another back. Sat nav says basically m1 and m25. Anyone that road know of road closures etc? My sat nav is a bit dated!

Clanger. EU harmonisation. It was probably somewhere between fuel/somebody think of the children and lately with added eco icing. Early 90s think.

Add to that buses/coaches/minibuses 100km/h and even 3.5 - 7.5T are restricted now.

I grew up around haulage and the tales of V8 scanias with coach diffs were rife, there was a place up north somewhere (Castleford) where they would do pump tweakage for GLF 38 tonners.

Me and my old man rebuilt his 14 litre V8. Big hammers may have been involved!  Lapping in those valves was an arse.

I was down there last week and nothing springs to mind. You got a smartphone? Google Maps will show traffic information, closed roads etc and route you round delays.

Or, just check maps.google.co.uk just before setting out, get directions on there, at the bottom you see a little traffic indicator. At the minute, if I select tomorrow morning, it says that the A1-A14-M25 is a 5 mile, 3 minute better route.

Must have been a rolling introduction in the early 90s. I remember school holidays were often spent with my mate and his grandfather who drove HGVs, sat on the bed (seatbelts?), hiding behind curtains as we went into collieries, and helping out with trailer legs, suzies etc.

He was quite fond of his B reg DAF 3100 as it flew, seemed to be unlimited. He resisted as long as possible but got a G reg DAF 95 which was more powerful, but slower top end - presumably limited.

I did work experience as a truck fitter in 1994, the limiters were in place then on all the trucks in the fleet but every driver knew which fuse to pull, they were hardly complicated affairs.
