When you put it like that yes I suppose they are. What I'm saying is it could mean several things.

Seriously? Built-in obsolescence in the injectors, like in a cheap inkjet printer? All modernz really are shit.

It's lasted much longer than the 7 years they are designed to last though hasn't it. Nothing runs forever.

Another insurance question,

I still don't own a towcar and have a long-distance collection in the offing, i have six insurances at the moment and all have drive other vehicles with permission,

The question, I've been offered a lend of a tranny van with towbar,

Can i drive this on drive other people's cover as four policy's are for cars and two are for bikes, i don't have a commercial vehicle on cover now since selling the hippo.

Read your insurance documents. Vans may be excluded.

Have read one if them and it just states that when driving other vehicles not belonging to me the vehicle has to be insured,

I take that could meen absolutely anything.

It means the van needs to be insured under a different policy i.e.; the owner's. Which is an odd way to word it as, if you put the van on it's roof, you wouldn't claim as it's not your van in the first place.

It's the damage you may do to other people that your policy would cover.

If it only says "vehicle" and doesn't specifically exclude vans anywhere else, then I would say that you should be covered, providing that the van is otherwise insured in its own right as mentioned above. That's what previous insurers have stated for me, and at least one of those I did phone and confirm that I could drive a van.

My current Admiral policy for example specifically states "cars" on the driving other vehicles section, so can't drive a van using the DOC cover on that one.

If you're in doubt, safest thing is to phone the insurer and clarify - a pain I admit, especially if you end up speaking to the village idiot, but far less than the pain you'll suffer if you get stopped and discover that you're not covered.

There may be a "definition of terms", or a "specific exclusions" (aka small print) that may rule out commercial use/commercial vehicles.

When I worked in Home Insurance, people would phone-up with the questions and the underwriters would just quote from the policy docs.

Okay the one i read and stated above got the earole bashed and the result are in,

Nope i can not drive a van with the drive other cover from my car as it's not a commercial policy damblastcocksticks

As that's the only one i have paperwork from i will have to wind up the laptop and read the others online.

Nae point even looking at the bike policy's that's for sure.

A question for MOT experts: Are advisories given on all cars with sill covers or just those that the inspector suspects may be dodgy?

Saab floppytop passed its MOT today with that as an advisory (and the handbrake but its a bader-matic so doesn't get used).

It looks mintola underneath to me.

Advisories are up to the MOT man

Or lady in this case :)

Isn't it generally a CYA thing?

If you can't inspect the sills then advise of that so if it snaps in half 2 miles later your not on the hook for not noticing.

This ^^^ or if you remove the cill covers and go riding round with goping big holes Mrs MOT lady can point out they weren't visible when you get a prohibition notice

There was a special notice recently asking testers to stop adding advisories for sill covers and undertrays for cars that left the factory like that.

How difficult are they to remove on the Saab if I wanted to check for myself?

Last night when starting the Saab it 'bonged' and showed ' replace key battery' on the SID. Showed this message every start up. The key buttons still locked/unlocked the car from a good distance away so I assumed the key battery was ok. However I replaced the key battery in the hope it would clear the message. It did. No further messages. Stupid question is, how does the car/ecu know the state of the key battery?

Bob,

Same way the PS3/PS4 knows the controllers need charging - the key will let the car know the voltage is low so it can bong at you.

Failing that - witchcraft.

is it legal and or sensible to replace the run flats (205/55/16) on rear of Mrs 95 quids Z4 with normal Michelin pilots i have kicking around

Zooming into picture I think it is just funky meter. I was looking for a drop tester, to test couple of the more elderly batteries I have  around

I recently bought the analogue version of that, does what it oughta, it even stood up to some abuse 'exercising' a couple of batteries, smoked a bit, switch became sticky, the coil distorted and the cables warmed up as they're a bit skinny with thick insulation like petrol station jump leads. Should be a perfectly durable tool if treated respectfully. I've also been impressed lately with a small digital tester that checks capacity by spiritualism, using both tools gives a good indication of bad juju levels.

I have a problem starting my Beetle. I have a new starter which i have tested and fitted. The problem is it's not starting! I have power from the ignition when tested and power from the battery. I tested it off of the battery in the car with jump leads and it worked but nothing when connected. Any ideas? Could it be an earth issue? Not sure how i check for a bad earth?

Is this likely to work or burst into flames

Run a jump lead from the battery neg to somewhere on the block as close to the starter as practical....

After having a play, i can get the starter going by jumping the the constant feed to the ignition terminal. After this I can put the ignition lead on and the starter will start off of the key once or twice then nothing. All this was done with starter dropped off the car and a lead from body of the starter to the floor pan. I iz confused!

Flashing mil on a diesel is an emission related fault . Usually an egr fault or map/ maf sensor issue . Boost leak maybe ? They love to split a boost hose those

Funnily enough mine threw up the Coil light flashing today then went in LOS. Scanned it and it came up with P0401. EGR was thick with oily shit. Cleaned it out and it's fine again. I wouldn't mind but I only did all this not six months back... it's like going back to the 1950's decoking the fucker every 6 months.
