Someone I work with wants to hire a Humber Super Snipe Mk11/111 to take his old Ma out as she used to have one. A very tall order I know, but does anyone have any ideas? Mk11/111 is 1948/52 and we are based in the NE of England. Cheers.

I had 100% decided not to buy that Brown Jag off the Blue, but it's nagging at me.

My excuse is that in the 70s I used to get a lift in my dentists Series 1 (brown as it happens) XJ6 and I promised myself one.

My X350 XJ - that was supposed to be the promised one, was a disaster and I never tire of warning people off them.

BUT

At the time I was doing a lot of miles and I only had 4 cars.

Now I have 6 so I really need another one, right?

Only it would have to live outside because I don't have any garage space left.

Please bare with me on this one:

Went to see a car and really pleased so left deposit. The car has a private plate on it which the seller is taking off. No issues with that as I'm not that bothered by them. Tried checking mot history checker. Car didn't come up. 'Phoned the doovla and they said yes the plate has come off. Explained that can they tell me the new reg so I can tax and insure. Answered No, but if I get the owner on the V5 to call then they could tell him. Called the seller and he was great said no probs he'd give them a bell. He then called them, they told him the private plate has come off and they are not allowed to give him the new reg number over the 'phone and he'll have to wait for the new docs to come in the post. I'm due to pay real monies tomorrow to collect the car. I'm away next week and this is the only day we can do it. Seller said we could adjust the date of the sale so I can drive the vehicle on his insurance and rfl. Would I in theory be driving a car with the wrong number plate? what would the rozzers do if I was stopped? What the fuck can I do?!

I hope this makes sense to you all!!

I think it's pretty normal when plates get changed on cars, the five-o should be used to it.

very small fine for that if you did actaully get done. used to be £30 but probably more now. just keep paperwork on you to prove

What does WBoD stand for? I know (I think) the first bit is winter.

Beater of doom I think.

I'd love to know what wpggpw or whatever means

According to Junkman, in the lexicon thread that I done know how to link to on my phone:

"It's actually Winter Beater of Distinction. A wreck bought for a few hundred quid in Autumn, with its last ever MoT expiring in Spring the following year".

Anpr highlights cherished transfer, and you get at least 2 weeks to swop plates over etc

The number plate re- issued will almost certainly be its original one.

Ha! I saved the old plates from a car I bought that was to use my cherished number.  When the car was later sold, DVLA issued a different registration!  Anybody want to buy a set of number plates?  They're unique (big selling point)...

My mk1 Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi is on 195,000 miles now and I've noticed recently it seems a little down on power and isn't pulling quite as cleanly as before - there's just the slight hint of a misfire under load.  I might be imagining it, it's not exactly factory fresh after all, but I'm thinking it's probably not far off due a service and as part of this I'd probably change the fuel filter as no idea when it was last done.

Question is, how does one do this on a diesel?  I've never done any work on a diesel engine before and I know the fuel systems can be a problem to re-prime, I think it's under the bonnet rather than underneath the car but there my knowledge ends.

While I'm doing this, anything else worth doing to a high-mileage diesel to ensure it's running as well as possible?  I suspect it needs a good high-speed run as well, it goes a fair distance each day but mainly on local A and B roads, rarely staying at 60 for any length of time.

When I bought my '04 Chrysler Voyager back in 2008, it was taken to a fuel injection specialist for them to check and clean whatever was necessary. They replaced two injectors and change filters and correctly tuned the car.  So if you plan to keep your Octavia then the cost of that service will most likely be offset in better fuel consumption, easier starting and decent performance.

80,000 miles on.. and my Chrysler still returns 48mpg on the clear open road and 42+ mpg when commuting.  As the car has now done over 220,000 miles and is still good on fuel, easy to start, and has fair performance - I reckon that service has paid for itself several times over.

Hope that helps. Bfg ;)

Good advice, thanks.  Italian tuneup is definitely on the cards, it needs a proper good run and I'll put a bottle of injector cleaner in it at the next fill-up too.

I'd read that the fuel filter on these *should* just need filling up and that's it - we'll see!

It starts instantly and generally runs very well so I'm happy that it's basically in good health, hopefully a service will be all it needs.

Get the engine warmed up before you change the filter so it's easier to start. Keep the revs up for a while after it starts up or it'll conk out as soon as the first bubble comes through and be an arse to start.

Clean the inlet manifold and egr. Easy to remove on an A4 so I would imagine the same for the skoda.

It will be full of soot.

Any ideas on how to deep clean car seats? Without leaving them wringing wet really.. The Oldsmobile seats are out and in a dry garage, but given that it is now October sunny drying days are going to be few and far between.

I buught a Vax 6130 to clean cars, it leaves thing pretty dry as long as they are fairly flat so it can seal and get a bit of suction going. Curves and seams are not so good for it.

If you're doing the filter put the bottle of injector cleaner in the new filter when you replace it.

Not sure if its exactly an OEM approved manoeuvre but I've always done it on my old shonkers to get the concentrated cleaning power to the injectors direct.

Bring them into the house. Might mean doing one at a time, and/or getting shouted at by SWMBO but if like us you are back into central heating season they'll dry pretty quick.

Do the actual washing outside and when you bring them in leave an old towel underneath and a window open a crack. This will a)reduce condensation in the house and B) reduce condescension from SWMBO

Would it be such a dumb suggestion to say..  take 'em to a car valet place.  ?

There seems to quite a few eastern European outfits  set up in and around this 'er town..  You probably got a choice around where you live ?   I can't imagine they'd charge a lot of  dosh just to professionally clean a couple of seats  ..when delivered to their doorstep.  Worth asking perhaps ?

You can still use the Vax for this, I just put the thin pointy tool on it rather than the dedicated washing tool to suck as much wet out of it as I can.

Changed turbo on e46 BMW - it doesn't smoke like Dot Cotton anymore, but slightly giving it some only very slightly (i.e. Normal acceleration), it smokes.

Is this symptom of injector leak - the car also stinks awfully of diesel.

... pleased to say the car (used to finance Turbot Shennanigans) is now FullOn, monami 8)

What's the easiest way to put these stupid stretch aux belts on a Fiesta?

They came with a tool but it doesn't fit as tightly to the crank pulley as I think it should
