E is for... exiting the fleet.

Excellent! 1990s Toyota estates are for winnarz.

I imagine it's pretty capacious inside? It was for that reason we bought our Carina E hatchback when the first SL baby arrived.

It seems to be, but it has barely been on fleet 12 hours and most of those were spent working. From the 20ish miles I've done it seems plenty comfortable and there is loads of room.

I neglected to tell WIFE_CMS it was arriving and instead chose the well proven method of just showing up with it to collect her from work. She says that it "smells".

Wiper linkage is baggy? That's presumably a British-made bit then? ;-)

It's bizarre. I've owned all sorts of utter dross over the years and I've never experienced wipers quite as lax in their approach to sweep at times.

Carina E, the E is for Europe.

Yet early Carina E estates were actually made in Japan... (until December 1994)

I like the Carina and approve of Japanese cars of this era, I'd be interested to know how you feel it compares with the Volvos though.

I'd imagine it's a real chalk and cheese experience?

Nice not sort of buy.

All 1990's Toyota smells. It's a different smell from 1990's Nissan and Honda. And they all have been that way since the mid-1990's too.

Early saloons were too - May til December '92 or something?

It's relatively quick (well, for a 1.6 litre 106bhp estate), handles well, quiet, warm... doesn't feel Swedish but it does feel well screwed together. It's not bad.

Yes. It will smell. It will smell of victory.

An excellent upgrade from the Stellar for CMS Cab Co, king of the rank once again. I'd forgotten these existed in estate form.

My word that has more dull than a tin of magnolia emulsion. We'll done.

That is stunningly generic. Like a drawing of a car done by a 7 year old.

I quite like it.

As an aside why does the Monty have no heating?

Kind words!

It is, somewhat.

Stunningly Generic. Toyota should really have used that as a slogan.

Not sure on the Montego. There IS heat... just next to fuck all of it. The car doesn't heat up at all, demisters are lukewarm.

I went for petrol. I took a couple more pictures.

Junior seems to like it. He was plonked in his carseat over an hour ago and passed out.

Maybe overwhelmed by all the Carina Excitement.82dd255d02950146b9a812280b42a413.jpg6555abceb84ad098d81e6aa738caf04f.jpg782a58dcfe6bda027f73f06fa12ded65.jpg1fed37d400f37fcd91df9142e1946114.jpg

I don't know why, I just love these things. Whenever I see one it just makes me smile. My girlfriend hates them (and anything perceived as "old") bit she will have to deal with that one day.

thats what I love about Ladas esp the saloons :)

I remember Top Gear magazine doing a group road test of one of these and 7 other upper medium cars including the Peugeot 406 which was the newest offering at the time. The writer of the article said something like: 'If you asked a bank robber to design a car then it would look just like the Carina E'

These are far more attractive than the Avensis estate that followed - whose arse is far too large for its otherwise size 12 frame.

I personally prefer the carina to the avensis in everything other than saloon flavour.

Today was cold. The fog hasn't lifted for two days. Likewise, the Carina hasn't moved since Saturday evening.

Key in door. Solid.

Get lighter. Heat key. Key opens door.

Key in ignition. Start engine. Demisters on. Heat.

I could get used to this.

(Well apart from the rear window demister and the foglight switches disappearing through the centre consol and having to dismantle the drivers door to get the window up at 2230 on Saturday night. I think that's the British bits of the build.)
