Multiple engine configurations in one model

Recommended Posts

As some of you already know my obsession is W124 Mercs, which came with four, five and six cylinder in-line engines as well as a V8, with two and four wheel drive versions and in petrol and diesel flavours.

Drivetrain and fuel options aside, that’s four different engine configurations in one model.

Can you think of a model with more?

Any American car from the mid 1950's on.

What about the W210?

4,6,V6,V8 petrol plus the 4,5,6 cylinder diesels....

You’re right, seconds after I posted the W210 came into my head. Bloody good example of multiple engine configurations.

Really?

I thought the Yanks only did straight sixes and V8s, perhaps the odd V12.

Rover 75

Petrol 4 cyl, 4 cyl Turbo, V6 FWD

Diesel 4 cyl FWD

Petrol V8 RWD

I think re-engineering a FWD car for a low volume RWD variant seems madness.

I seem to remember Ford doing some weird thing mid nineties where you could have any model escort with any engine trim?

Granted that was more capacity and pez/Diz variation than cylinders.

The Renault 21 had a choice of transverse or north-south engine layout. Not to mention four different wheelbases.

Rover P4? 60, 75, 80, 90, 95,100, 105, 110 - though basically only two engines is you discount the gas turbine...

If we're talking engine configuration in the strict sense, a Renault 21 1.7 has a transversely mounted engine but bigger engines are mounted longitudinally, with a marginally different wheelbase.

Which seems like an incredibly French thing to be doing well into the 90s.

Four? I thought there were two, depending on drivetrain.

Wartburg 353/1.3:

353  3 cylinder in line, two stroke, longitudinally mounted, front wheel drive, column change.

1.3   4 cylinder in line, four stroke, transverse, front wheel drive, floor change, wider track.

It won't win, but the HC-generation Mazda Luce is worth a mention for offering I4, V6 or rotary power.

Failing that, there's also the Vauxhall Nova, whose engine choices went right up to a C25XE 2.5-litre V6, although they always say "1.2 litre" on the logbook for some reason.

Two for the saloon, two for the estate.

Lada vehicle range at one point in the 80s:

60 HP petrol 4 cylinder

76 HP petrol 4 cylinder

(suspected) diesel 4 cylinder for estates only, however this I don't actually know as fact

single rotor Wankel

140 HP dual rotor Wankel

Bits might be rubbish. It is what I have amassed after all!

An honourable mention for Renault with the 5 and Clio in making the rear mid engine versions of each.

1.4 turbo for the 5, 3 litre V6 for the Clio.
