I'll have the drivers side mirror please

I say this with trepidation, but if the worst does happen and this is off to become bean tins at some point, I would be interested in the engine to go in (NJGleeds) Rover 800 that is currently languishing on the farm. I hadn't realised the engine came from an 800 so hopefully wouldnt be too hard to swap in.

Calm down chaps, it might require a friendly tester and structural gaffer tape but I'm determined that she will see 2019.

Let's just hope the screen was bad luck and she's solid where it matters. It's going to take some willpower to fix the exhaust. Noisy car is fun.

If my experience of failing exhausts is anything to go by, whatever sounds amazing inside the car will sound bloody awful outside it. Man I was disappointed when my Fiesta Mk2's exhaust fell apart when I was 17. Outside, it was not the beautiful race machine I anticipated.

Aye, chuffin ell. If this car was borked, we'd get the bastard sorted again.

The collecive power of AutoShite can pull welders, windscreens and balljoints out of our arses we're such a bunch of sexual deviants.

People might laugh at us now but in the history books our legacy will be the motto, "NO ROVER LEFT BEHIND!".

Future generations will use their cybernetic genital connections to read about how the Autoshite Rover became the last car in Europe powered by exploding dinosaur juice, not the smug smell of self satisfaction and debt that powers cars of the future.

This car is our two fingers to your Jukes, your plug ins and your Lexus Hybrid Touchmybits.

This car is not just Autoshite, its proper shite.

I bought it from Billy and picked it up from Chester on 25th February 2017. Let my mate drive it for a few days around Wigan then he delivered it to Scotland.

A few names like Billy's won't be on V5 so list could be more like 20 odd!

Could this one beat the BX estate for the record of having the biggest list of Autoshite people inside it?

I've had it twice, once in 2013 and once in 2015 I think.  First time I bought it off Mastervan who had it from sixcylinder, I sold it to RobT via a handover in Taunton.

Second time, I traded the ex-Garycox Escort for it with HMC and then swapped it a few months later with JohnK for his ex-RobT Rover 214.  HMC bought it off RobT.

Simples!

In my ownership it had, off the top of my head...

- windscreen and frame repairs

- water pump

- radiator

- front brake pads

- welding to sills

- a suspension part off Joe's blue 214 breaker

- cam cover gasket

- plugs & leads

- amateurish paintwork repairs (hence the mismatched white patches - the spray can turned out to not be the right shade)

- Dogs Trust sticker in back window (adds 2bhp)

- proper Rover floor mats in grey

- proper MG Rover twin pipe back box which ate its baffles quite quickly

- at least one secondhand wing mirror

Plus the usual oil & filters.  Never managed to get the fuel filter to come off.  It had other bits and pieces as well

I know JohnK replaced the sump gasket after it became excessively incontinent and RobT put a couple of front tyres on it when he had it prior to HMC before I bought it back the second time.

During my second ownership stint it provided emergency transport for a month for my sister while her car was down with me being repaired, her initial distaste for it mellowed quite quickly and I think she became converted to the ways of shite somewhat as a result.  It got papped once or twice whilst she hooned it around Wales, so as a warning to all future owners, this car will make you famous* and you may need to adjust your lifestyle accordingly.

My thread on its two times with me: http://autoshite.com/topic/14775-roverspray/?hl=roverspray

Sixcylinder's sale thread: http://autoshite.com/topic/13747-last-chance-to-buy-the-rover-220sli/

RobT's sale thread: http://autoshite.com/topic/19031-rover-220sli-%C3%82%C2%A3300/

JohnK's sale thread: http://autoshite.com/topic/23144-rover-220-sli-as-bike-%C2%A3200/

HMC (ex-BrookJim or whatever he's called today) printed out the forum stuff that's in the folder which holds most of the car's history.  I merely put all the accumulated paperwork into the lever-arch file as it was getting too big for the file it was stuffed in beforehand.

Certainly wins very easily for number of owners. Especially as some have had it twice!

While I never owned it I did borrow it from Nisfan for a few weeks but girlfriend_70s said I wasn't to keep it out of concerns for my financial stability.

She did however like the car, if not the condition.

On the exhaust front, I replaced the front section only a few months ago only for it to go again, the backbox will have some of the worst welding you have ever seen done by myself and would be better being replaced.

I couldn't find a replacement and didn't want to play "correct eBay part lottery"

I've replaced the pas. side front spring, rear brakes were seized and freed off.

Dent in drivers side wing happened in a contraflow when a lorry from the other side was pinging cones everywhere and one clouted the wing and took a bit of number plate as well.

The bonnet has been jumped on.

The crack was only tiny after I first jacked it up and gradually got bigger.

I don't know how much it would be worth looking into the grot in the windscreen as said by captain_70s I have bad luck with them, over the last year: rover, civic , BMW E36,305 x 3 and bought the Ballade with a cracked screen.

I enjoyed driving this over the six months of ownership but will admit to not really caring about the bodywork as it was just a WBOD, kept all the fluids etc topped up .

That has been a feature of just about every MOT this car has ever been through.  I think it's a general R8 thing.

Posted

Between the 2010 and 2011 MOT this did 30k miles, then another 24k over the next 12 months. Someone put some fairly serious miles on it over 2 years!!

Posted

I had it 5-Feb 2013 to 18 May 2013.

Start mileage 132,962. I enjoyed it very much and visited Wales, it was completely reliable.

We called it Mr Mainwaring from Dad's Army. The thinking was if Mr Mainwaring was still a bank manager in the mid 90s this is the car he would have had!

Mastervan also owned it either just before, or just after 6c.

My approx dates- bought from Robt- jan 2014, swapped with Phil_lip April 2014

Any excuse to post my road trip pics again!

I think it was Mastervan judging by this photo, it still had MOT and was running well but had a bad crack across the windscreen that it had all the time we had it.

I viewed this fine automobile yesterday.

I do not want to be rude about it but it appears to have lots of patina.

Are those the ones where you feed a sort of abrasive cheese wire through from one side to the other and then use it to cut all the way round? I've not yet needed to replace a screen but I'd have a go at that if I did.

The cheese wire method is often used by fitters, last fitters to do my R8 used a cheese wire along with the phrase 'it's beeen pancaked' which I assumed was reference to its first replacement screen being fitted with a large amount os sealant and the disapproval of such my the fitters of the second replacement.

The cutter I used is like an angled Stanley knife with a pull cord and one works from the outside of the glass. Quite easy to use, even more so if you are not worried about the 'prestige' of 'I got a broken screen out without breaking it any more'. Of course, if you then go on to cut the screen out of a scrapper, one will know how much care is needed to ' 1 piece a pancake'
