Folding passenger seats - which cars?

Recommended Posts

So perhaps slightly odd request - looking to compile a list of cars where the passenger seat can be folded flat for cargo needs.

I'm currently renovating our house and having to lump around lengths of 2x4" CLS, skirting, frequent trips to the garbage centre and a failed trip to IKEA. Ideally I'd have a van but that's not ideal as need the 4 seats etc etc.

I already have to do a bit of musical cars at home, so fitting an estate on the drive would be a hassle and involve more dancing about that I can't be hacked with so it seems a mini MPV could do the trick.

After a lot of googling, I found that the C3 Picasso has a fold down passenger seat, that I reckon would easily fit a
good amount of 2.4m lengths of timber + the usual garbage. So I have been searching for all cars with fold down passenger seats.

Anyhow here's the list what have I have missed?

  • Citroen Berlingo - van version passenger seat can be amended to fit with some engineering
  • C3 Picasso
  • C4 Picasso (I never realised there was a c3 and c4 Picasso...)
  • Fiat Multipla
  • Ford B max
  • Ford Fusion
  • Honda Civic (not latest model)
  • Honda Jazz
  • Hyundai iX20
  • Kia Venga
  • Mazda 2
  • Mercedes A Class - seats removable (early ones?)
  • Skoda Yeti (option?)
  • Smart ForFour (option but just need to remove little catch plate)
  • VW Touran - SE models and above
  • VW Golf some?
  • VW Golf Plus
  • VX Meriva (2003 - 2010)

Too Small/big but do:
  • Austin Maxi
  • Ford Galaxy
  • Honda HRV
  • Hyundai Equus (1990)
  • Peugeot 1007 (05 -09)
  • Peugeot 5008
  • Skoda Octavia (option?) Only with the SE not the Elegance which has Alcantara seats that cannot
  • Renault Twingo
  • Volvo all of them except c30?
  • Skoda Superb
  • Toyota Century (!)
  • Toyota Previa
  • VW Sharan - all seats are removable apart from drivers , and front seats are captains chairs also
  • VX Carlton
  • VX Cavalier
  • VX Omega (some)
  • VX Ventra (pre '53)
  • VX Zafira

  • Dacia Duster does in europe but not in the UK

Honda Jazz is particularly good even a post 99/2000 Nissan Almera would do the job. I have got double yellers old Mitsubishi Lancer estate and it is more than capable of hauling stuff around.

I can attest that the Jazz has very good folding down seats. Been very useful in house rennovation.

Zafira mk1 does for definite. Massive load space all over to be fair. I use one as a van and it takes all sorts. Worthless too..

The 1990 Hyundai Equus has a similar set up, but I can't find a picture of that.

Fiat Multipla. Both front passenger seats and all 3 rear seats fold flat, the rears are all individual so you can just fold down the middle 2 or left 2 have 4 seats with 8ft lengths in.

Just bought a load of 2.4m lengths of 4x2 for my ongoing garage/ workshop project. The V70 swallowed them up with ease. It will also take 8x4 sheets of insulation if you cut them in two length ways or whole sheets of ply if you let it hang out the back just a bit.

You forgot the Toyota Century.

My 1st gen Skoda Superb had this party piece too.

Honda Civic spaceship and the one after both have the magic seats that fold flat like the Jazz. Basically a bigger, nicer Jazz.

The latest, latest one doesn't though. Certainly some regression by Honda in my opinion.

I got 58 lengths of cls in the touring all cut at 2.4m with space spare for shorter stuff and shut the tailgate. I done that for 3 journeys back and fourth totalling 174 lengths. That's the longest I've had in there. The heaviest was 22 meters of turf but I didn't need the pass seat down for that. You can also fit 8 full lengths of green floorboard in there, and a smoll kid... just.

Trick is to load it up and then ratchet strap it all together.

My Morris 1000 Traveller front passenger seat back would fold down and then the whole folded seat could be tipped forward so that it was under the dashboard and out of the way, allowing long items to be carried...

The VW Touran does. You've got the Tiguan listed, not sure if that's a mistake or not given the Tiguan is the Cayenne-style blobby 4x4 thing that's actually quite small inside, and the Touran is the big square MPV 7-seater.

Tiguan is the golf based SUV, the big one is the Toerag!

Peugeot 5008 also does it, but very similar car to the C4 Picasso.

Mk2 Cavalier. I brought 2 lengths of kitchen worktop up to Yorkshire from Birmingham in mine. Had to take the passenger door card off to fit them in mind, and had to take the gear knob off to get reverse gear.

You're right! Sorry.... but you can still add the Touran to the list, passenger seat backrest flops forward and the centre row all come out.

My old Mk1 Carlton estate had a separate lever that flicked it down flat

My blueys backrest goes forward a fair way too, almost to the dash (lever, not wheel adjust), which has come in handy to move 7-8` ladders & wood:

Open. The. Window. Drive home like you're an IAM member,

I had a Berlingo when I was lugging wood about, but big wood don't fit. 'Own it' as the kids say, and 5-0 will (probably) leave you alone.

I got a load of longer lengths back home in my Outlander by opening the sunroof and wedging them in. Same as the winodw trick with less pedestrian jousting potential.

I can confirm that a 1994 Volvo 850 T5 has this feature, presumably for those telegraph poles and intercontinental ballistic missiles that don't quite fit on the boot. I shall have to check if my father's 1996 model is similarly-equipped.

Austin Maxi of course, the seats fold totally flat like a bed.

Princess too, but no folding seats so you need an Ambassador since that has the folding seats AND a hatchback.  It's like a Maxi just bigger and with less character.

Pre 53 reg Vectra c have the flip front seat too. We have had 2 52 platers, one elegance trim and one sxi and an03 plate ls. 53 onwards didn't have it,ours was a 53 plate active and others I've seen hasn't had it either. Start of decline on the Vectra equipment.

The front seat folded forwards in my Smart roadster, but not much use for what you want, it did have a handy cupholder on the back and made a handy desk if you needed to write though.
