Is 27mpg not a bit disappointing?

I’d get 28 out of an 8v 300e Mercedes off of the 80s!

I honestly reckoned this would break the 30. Even if “only just”

Still, who cares. Practically a free car.

If memory serves this is a straight six so only has a 4 speed auto. Plus oddly enough the longer diff ratio on the 4.0l means the smaller engine drinks more. To cracking 30mpg you need a V8 as that's when the 5 speed box appeared.

You came close to getting stalked by a red transit, when you got off the M62 onto the M6 I must be been about a mile behind you

Massive thanks to everyone I met and helped me. Especially to my mate Steve who came along for the ride and drive. He managed a couple of hours at the helm but unfortunately is a bit too tall to fit comfortably in the drivers seat. Also played a big part in keeping my sane head on and not worry about the rattles, drones and shunts.

He also travelled from Pencoed, so has been up since 3:15am and now driving himself back! Hopefully will be back before midnight.

To be fair to it, remember this is a 1970s engine modernised and the ZF gearbox is from the 1980s. The gearbox was used a lot on BMWs and likely to be very similar to your Mercedes. 4 speed, purely mechanical and it only locked up the Torque Converter in 4th and at speed. Modern boxes lockup at much lower gears, speeds and more far often. Thus massively reducing losses, increasing efficiency and thus MPG.

Annoying there were loads of 50mph limits on this journey. Which is just on the edge of the Torque Converter locking up engaging and disengaging. Noticed it sometimes did it with a this - possibly because it's mechanical and didn't like being messed around with it hovering around the engage + disengage speeds.

Glad you are back safely. Always loved that shape of Jaaaag especially in that red colour.

Aware you have just driven 470 miles, but surely you had a 9 mile round trip in you.

Would have been great to pull up bang on 120k

It was something we considered. But then decided we really couldn't be arsed at that point! Not least that Steve needed to get home.

I'm expecting £100 for the fuel back in the Jag.

Depending where you shopped I think you were spot on with this.

Just got a message from Steve to say he's back home.

So mission successful.

Was a long day, but others have done much longer journeys! It's about the limit that I can realistically do in a day nowadays.

That's a sterling effort, and the car did you proud. Your mate Steve also sounds like a decent bloke, will he join up on here or is he too normal for that?

I've said to him a few times he should join up. He's gone all sensible nowadays with a modern diesel Volvo though. His projects used to be buy old Volvo's and stick massive turbos on them. Also ran a number of cars that are AS favourites like old Lexus (Lexii?).

28.4 OMGMPG?

It's no wonder The Climate doesn't Improve®.

We figured the quickest speed home was 70mph. Too much faster and we'd loose time having to keep filling the tank back up...
