Exiled_Tat_Gatherer Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 I stayed off here after the partial meltdown Friday - I found out a friend of ours had committed suicide so it was not a good day. I've just thought of checking AS to cheer up a bit - preparing to head up to NL for the cremation in a couple of days and get this........ I'm heading south with mates for a 50th in 4weeks and was trying to arrange meeting the legend on the way. He was an absolute hero of mine - I'll admit. His writing style, no bullshit wit and the way he battled life all the way was truly legendary - and that is no hyperbole. As others have said - I can't believe I'm sitting in the office first thing Monday with tears in my eyes for someone who I only hoped to meet 'someday'. RIP Dave - legend that you are/were. I'd second the grumpy rename..... he epitomised the thread every single post...... Ah fuck it...... Jerzy Woking, spartacus, Uncle Jimmy and 4 others 7
theorganist Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Awful news. RIP Dave and my condolences to his family.
Talbot Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. The suddenness is a shock, and this community has lost a great character. Like Mr Fowler, this is the second person who I had a passing knowledge of in the "motoring enthusiast" community who is very recently no longer with us. I know it's inevitable, but that doesn't make it any easier. I wish I'd met Mr. numbers, if only to hear French being spoken with a Scots accent. myglaren 1
holbeck Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Wow. What a shock. Will be missed by many on here. Dave went and pillaged a Simca 1100 in a French scrapyard for me.It was the mark of the man that he wouldn't accept the cost of postage let alone anything for his time. alf892 Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Terrible and shocking news. I didn't know him away from here but his posts were always a good read with his humour and fantastic make do skills RIP Dave and condolences to his family
twosmoke300 Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 RIP Dave , one of the funniest guys on here and will be sorely missed. The grump post about dropping his pot noodle/phone etc will be eternally etched in my mind Exiled_Tat_Gatherer and myglaren 2
sporty-shite Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 A real shock. Like others have already said, he'll be sadly missed. Came across as a genuinely good guy, with a unique wit and enviable knowledge and determination. RIP Dave. myglaren 1
egg Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 So sad. Top bloke. Will be much missed here. Seemed to have bottomless knowledge about all sorts of stuff.
oldcars Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Fuck sake no way. Far to soon, this guy had skills i could only dream about. Terrible terrible news.

As he drove in the direction of Roquecourbe-Montredon, around 1am, the 40-year old motorist who lived in Arifat hit a tree at the side of the road. D Spares & Tyres Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Never met him but enjoyed his posts Liked his ability to fix things in a non conformist way. His self deprecating humour made me laugh. I mostly agreed with his world weary rants A proper character. RIP Lord Sterling, myglaren and AMC Rebel 3
Asimo Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Sad. What a shame. I will really miss his posts. R.I.P. Dave.
Des Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 That news is a kick in the bollocks, little consolation but the guy seems to have squeezed far more from life than most.. Uncle Jimmy, Jerzy Woking, myglaren and 1 other 4
DSdriver Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Oh dear. Dave numbers, your death is our concern.I always said trees are dangerous.Sincere condolences to all family and friends.
The Moog Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 I can only echo what has been said here. What a shock for a Monday. In lots of ways he was Autoshite. A grumpy old bugger who was born into the wrong era, but frankly any era would have been wrong. Turning his hand to all the jobs around him, he certainly had enough stories for more than one lifetime. Forthright and opinionated, yet at the same time bringing humour that brightened my day.The MGF conversion in pretty much a lunchtime, the on going saga of living in rural France coupled with the honesty of sharing it with us all. I was secretly hoping he would commit all his stories to a book, a year in Provence for the AS folk. That would definitely be a best seller. A real part of the tapestry of the world has been lost. Only a couple of weeks younger than me, it certainly hits close to the mark. We will see if it is possible to do a collection in memory of him, which once we know the details we can share. I did wonder if he'd been discharged from hospital late at night, utterly knackered. Then, you know all those warnings about driving while tired... This seems to add some substance to that theory.
Richard Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 RIP Dave. I wouldn't be in favour of renaming the grumpy thread. If his memory is going to be defined by anything it should be his perseverance and ingenuity. A thread about that would be more appropriate IMO. Clanger, DeeJay, oldcars and 14 others 17
quicksilver Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Deeply shocked and saddened to wake up to this news. I never had the pleasure of meeting Dave but felt like I knew him through his always entertaining and informative posts. He had so much skill, ingenuity and a wicked sense of humour and even when life dealt him shit you couldn't help but smile at the way he dealt with it. He was and is an Autoshite legend and a great loss, not just to the forum but to society, and will be sorely missed. RIP Davenumbers. myglaren 1
Slartibartfast Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 How tragic. 40 is no age at all. Since this forum is open, his family and non-autoshite friends may come across this thread, so if so I'd just like to say how very sorry I am for your loss. Dave was a well liked and respected member and we will miss his contributions greatly. He brought so much to the forum. loserone and oldcars 2
Guest Hooli Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Shit, I didn't expect to read that or be older than Davenumbers. RIP fella, you seemed a great bloke & I'd like to have met ya.
captain_70s Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Horrible news to wake up to on a Monday morning. A really talented guy and a natural story teller, he'll be missed hugely. RIP DaveNumbers.
wuvvum Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 I did wonder if he'd been discharged from hospital late at night, utterly knackered. Then, you know all those warnings about driving while tired... This seems to add some substance to that theory. Sadly it does. The article does say that nobody else appears to have been involved. Either that or the blood clot was a sign of a more serious issue that was missed by the hospital.
binhoker668 Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 Horrendous news. Like most on here, I really enjoyed his threads. Inspiring. We lost another good 'un... That thumbs up pic with the Panda - Calendar pic for July 2019?Would be fitting....
