I plan to go and pillage that cab on Saturday. Only problem is, I want the winsdscreen out of it, and having measured up its too big to fit in my car!!! (Fiat Stilo)

Not sure how I'm going to sort that really, but there must be a way. Anyone local to me (Alfreton Derbyshire) or the cab (Stockport) feel like getting involved? I either need to go over in a bigger vehicle, or find someone local to it who can stash the windscreen till i have a chance to collect it in a different vehicle (e.g. a horsebox).

Can offer 'lunch out' to anyone who can help me!!!

If no-one can, I will probably ask the seller to hang onto it for a bit (risky strategy admittedly) and go back with the seats removed from the Stilo later on.

Would offer to help out for somewhere to stash the screen but I'm sadly completely the wrong direction.

The tale of Bollox 'Orse box bits

That lorry's getting on me tits.

A parcel come to the Ayres household

Contained his bloody manifold.

Husband said keep it, but that isn't nice

So down to the shed and into the vice.

Weld a new flange, it's a bit of a mess

But it'll will teach them to check the bloody address.

So no more old tat should darkens my door,

Wait till E foinds the dead mouse down the bore.

Fank you very much.

I did go up to Tibshelf and picked it up. Brought it back, then tonight I cleaned it up, tapped out the stud holes on the downpipe flange, then found that the downpipe flanges are different!!!! FAAARRRRKKKKKK!!!!

Put a LCB 4 Branch on it with a non resonated centre section and a 'boom n burble' back box. That should keep you up with the lads of yesterday and the lads of today. A sort of Chorsa Box.

Mr Nads,

Bad news on the manifold!

If you think the screen will go in the back if an e-class estate or a Touareg, I’d be glad to offer assistance...

Even when things are going not entirely smoothly, a Bollox update is always worth waiting for.

Amazing. Sounds like you should go back for another go at getting a windscreen

Posted

Wow, that's in good shape. Pity about your overhang or swapping it would have solved a load of your problems.

How did you cut everything out or have you got one of them fancy cordless grinders?

Posted

I took a mega long extension wire and ran it though about 40m of gloopy mud to a socket in a shipping container in the yard!!!

Maybe worth the cost of getting a professional windscreen fitter in to remove it? After all, if they do them daily (I know most are bonded but still), they should have a good chance of getting it out without damaging it.

At least they let you plug it in and you didn't have to tap it out with a cold chisel.

I'll step in if needed. Have a picasso. Plenty of space in it.

Turbo engine would be nice to have - only an extra 20bhp but a fuckload more torque, supposed to make them a lot easier to drive.  Although if memory serves there are a lot of differences in mountings etc between the turbo and non-turbo engines, so probably more hassle than it's worth to do a swap.

Plus you need a flipping mega crane or Manitou telehandler to lift the heavy bastard engine!!!

What did you do to break the screen when getting it out, Bo11?  I've only taken a few out and once you get the chrome surround out and clench your arse as you do the first bang in the corner, it should all be fine.  If you're not worried about the sealing rubber you can use a stanley knife to cut through it and reduce the force on the screen.

No greater fun than chopping up old tin outside in winter. Wasn't worth having the bumper, or was it a bit big to fit in the Fiat?

Posted

That's bad luck on the screen, offset by a result on the doors and scuttle though! Back in the day when I was pillaging Alfa Suds for spares I could never get a screen out in one, eventually I learnt to slice the rubber, as garethj suggests. This was fine until the time came when you couldn't get new rubbers!

What sort of sound deadening are you thinking of using on the bulkhead, in considering the same job on my LDV camper?

Posted

I was trying not to chop up the screen rubber as it was in good nick and someone on the FB group  (who has now gone quiet!!!!) said they wanted to buy it. So to get the screen out I was sat inside the cab just gently easing the inner lip of the sealing rubber, outwards over the flange of the screen surround using plenty of WD to ease matters. As I say I got it 2/3 out and must have been getting a bit cocky. I pushed the glass outwards, not terribly hard, but the bending moment on the glass must have been too much now it was unsupported down half its length, and it just cracked right down the middle from the top. '#MUTHAFUCKA' as I believe the youngsters say nowadays.

I got the rear glass out fine BTW!

Weld up around the original windscreen aperture to make a smaller opening, and fit the rear glass in its place, surely?

You clearly enjoy lots of welding, hence Renault horseboxed.

Good to see the old girl out and about, a power of work has gone on indeed! What would be cooler than parking up in a decent spot, opening the back door and having a can? Nothing on earth!

This thing has been sitting on my drive looking like a flipping eyesore for about 9 months now while I sort out its general all-round knackeredness. Well yesterday I finally got it back together, turned the key and took it for an actual spin!!!! It now has a new radiator, exhaust manifold, steering coupling, oil, coolant, overhauled front suspension, new brake pads and loads of other stuff. Its still got plenty of problems but somehow seems to be lifted out of the 'fit only for scrap' category despite its appalling appearance. Will attempt to do an update of all the fettling shortly.

Woo!

happy to see this is still around, and that lots of work has been done :)

I very much look forward to reading about all the fettling, and well done/congrats for getting it back into road worth shape :)

I saw worse than this on the M5 the other day,

So, the radiator. It was f&&ked and recoring it ws going to cost about £300, so I had the bright idea of buying a roughly similarly-sized chinesium one off eBay for £90. But to get it installed it needed some modifying, which I farmed out to the dude up the road who does all sorts of fabricaiton and general interesting car and metalwork stuff. But he knacked his back and it took him months to get roun to doing it. Eventually i got this back:

P1090039.jpg

His task was to weld two brackets on the top, add the extra 25mm pipe stub, weld up the two small ports for the transmission cooler (should have left those alone really) and add a little 10mm pipe stub on the top for the air bleed. Total cost: £40. Bargain!!! I think he did it cheap cos it had taken him like 3 months to do it.

I started by slicing the lugs off the bottom:

P1090040.jpg

Made two little captive nut brackets that slid in from the ends:

P1090042.jpg

And attached 2 rubber bobbin moiunts that I got off eBay for a few quid:

P1090043.jpg

Cos I couldnt access the nut, I couldnt do these up very tight! I did my best but really I should have found some with a hexagonal plate you could get a spanner on. Anyway, onwards:

P1090044.jpg

On the top edge, the guy had welded these brackets on, they were positioned to join up to the existing mounts in the front panel using the existing angle brackets:

P1090048.jpg

I mounted it off the top mounts, basically hanging it off the slam panel (notice my freshly painted tin shields at the side of the rad!!)

P1090046.jpg

Now I had to make some angle brackets off the front crossmember that would mate up to the AV mounts on the lower edge:

P1090050.jpg

Made these rather wobbly specimens out of 2mm plate, and drilled them to go on the AV mounts:

P1090052.jpg

Here we're looking up and forwards at the bottom of the rad. I marked on the x-member where the angle brackets went on, and welded them int place:

P1090053.jpg

Predictably the x-member needed some localised repairs of its own:

P1090055.jpg

I welded it up and gave it a coat of red oxide:

P1090083.jpg

And mat black:

P1090096.jpg

That smartened it up a treat. ON it went:

P1090102.jpg

Check it out!!!! All new BZP bolts as well and I retapped all the captive nuts everywhere. went together a treat.

The pipe stubs on the new rad were a slightly different size to the old ones some I bought some silicone reducer hoses of about the right angle and chopped the end off the old hoses, joining the silicone ones in their place:

P1090105.jpg

All new jubilee clips everywhere:

P1090106.jpg

The filler tube from the expansion bottle had jubilees on theat were far too big, so I replaced all those too with brand spankers:

P1090114.jpg

P1090118.jpg

The expansion bottle was filthy, rusty inside from not having strong enough antifreeze in, and splattered with schutz on the outside:

P1090111.jpg

I cleaned it out with various applications of bleach, thinners, soapy water and sand. Eventually got it as clean as I could manage:

P1090119.jpg

I had intended to flush the cooling system through with a dishwasher tablet but in the end I got impatient and just wanged the new coolant in, took about 2.5 gallons man (No I didnt fill the engine with screenwash, I just mixed the coolant in that bottle)

P1090140.jpg

You can just about see the coolant level now in the expansion bottle (small mercies etc)

P1090148.jpg

Anyway it seems to be leak free and on my admittedly not massive test drive, the engine got up to temp OK but never got higher than about half on the temp gauge. So hopefully the rad is going to be OK. If it fails in the future mind you its gonna be a right ballache as its basically a custom rad installation now. Total spend including rad, tig welding, hoses, adaptors, clips and coolant was about £180 so a lot less than £300, but although i saved £120 I spent friggin ages getting it together so was that a good strategy? I'm not sure TBH. Anyway I've still got the old rad so will keep it in case the worst happens!!!!
