Ford Mondeo Base - Sale aborted.

If we are playing the my cars more base than your cars game then I must win something for my van, this is 1984 remember, hardly the early days of motoring yet I have no reclining seats, the interior light has to be manually switched on, no cigarette lighter, no radio, no carpets and ply for door cards. In fact the only luxury items it does have are a lid on the glovebox and a trip milemeter. a328729566d3d7f1507a829748b1c35f.jpg

My “base” Relay has a DAB radio, Bluetooth, electric windows, hill start assist.....

I’ll get my coat

Noice. Knew it'd only be a matter of time before this ended up in the fold.

I reckon my Doloshite is pretty bASe, smallest engine, lowest trim, no options selected (inc passenger side mirror). Still decadent compared to an Austin or Morris though...

i bought a maestro 1.3 bASe from my mates dad- what i got was a 1.3 dAVe cos he worked for leyland/austin/rover and the car had- plah 13" alloy wheels, plah rear shelf, plah steering wheel, rear wash/wipe, centre console, sill cubbies, mg metro headrest trimmed in correct "brushwood" trim & internal mirror adjustment

andby the time i'd finished with it there was rev counter, roly poly headrests, mg efi grille & glovebox lid with glovebox light!

AngryDicky had a beige maestro bASe!

Yes, and it didn't have any VDP bits either! The usual thing happened - got it running and driving really well with loads of nice shiny new parts, then sold it at a loss and bought another moneypit.

T'is true, I sat in it...and it refused to start! But let me assure you all it was the very epitome of the Base.

Ooh she was HOT, lol.

Old Mondeo threads are like finding undiscovered Marilyn Monroe shoots from 1955.

Sadly the scallies I sold it to killed it shortly afterwards or it was seized by Merseyside Police.

Any updates on this?

After careful digging here's the thread where I buy a 1.6 Mk1 Mondeo for those of you who weren't here in 2015.

http://autoshite.com/topic/19561-mk1-mondeo-save-or-scrap/

True to form, the guy is being as recalcitrant as previously feared. He’s now saying I need to pick the car up from his Mothers, which is easily another 15 miles down the road. No huge issue, but as I’ve said before if I’m poor in any respect - it’s that I’m short of time.

I’ll aim to get this collected on Saturday, possibly tomorrow if he’s not as evasive as I suspect!

He's being a bit of a tit about all this, tell him the money will need to be picked up from Mr C Avcraft somewhere in the Chester area

I have been offered a mk2_ Mondeo today

Scrap money. Just failed an mot but he is reluctant to spend the £230 it needs to pass one. I told him to fix it, better the devil you know! It had a new clutch last year!

Seems a shame to throw it away. Reg number T940 RUY if anyone is interested. Its a 1.8 manual hatch in silver so pretty dull but £150 would buy it

Perhaps it's me, but if I'm buying something I turn up with the cash and take it away.

Job jobbed.

Edit, not aimed at you despairs.

Aye. It’s aimed at me. I get it.

The dude was using the car until today. No buyer could have collected it until tomorrow. I’m collecting it at the weekend.

Not sure I see the issue?

Looks like back brakes, the connection on the horn and the airbag problem. Depends what rest of its like, its not just the test, could be other crap on the horizon, exhaust or it could be pissing water in.

Still if it was otherwise OK, it's worth £230 for another years motoring.

It's the shots you keep aiming at the seller.

At least he waited until you decided, and then until you turned up with a deposit.

He wouldn't let you drive in the ice, neither would I.

I arranged to buy something and the seller sold it to someone else.

I see your guy as a good guy.

Err. I’m wondering if you’ve not read the entire thread. It’s not me buying it, I’m just the gopher for ‘Red5’. So no - I didn’t spend someone else’s money without their thumbs up, I didn’t make a decision on his behalf, and I didn’t aim a shot at the seller. Recalcitrant is to be uncooperative. It’s not an insult, just an observation. The vendor moved the viewing three times, wouldn’t let the car go out despite the weather being very good and has now moved said vehicle 20 miles away, despite saying it’d be outside his house.

I don’t know what I’ve done to you to deserve a backlash; I’ve just tried my best to buy a car on behalf of a bloke I’ve never met - and document the amusing and somewhat bemusing process of car buying for others to read and, perhaps, enjoy.

Perhaps I’ve misunderstood the point of this whole place? Maybe my interpretation of this entire forum has been incorrect all along, and I ought to be posting topless women in the open forum - along with the odd ill informed political viewpoint and a bit of casual racism mixed in for good measure?

Sorry you didn’t get your winch. If one comes up around here, I’ll gladly assist in getting it to you. I won’t ask for any money, I won’t spend yours if it turns out to be worse than described and I’ll try not to be offended if anyone else decides to have a go at me for helping.

Don't be offended at all.

Just trying to see things from the other side.

It's difficult buying for someone else, I wouldn't even attempt it.

Not really relevant unless it's the same vendor, and probably not even then tbh.

Don't know what 'my guy is a good guy' means or is supposed to mean. If you have an issue with your seller, take it up with them.

Sooo moving on to a happy place, what's the plan for it red5? A btcc rep? A garage queen? A load lugger? Or a quick buff and roffle?

Red5, will you be neeeding my assistance on recovering this? I am a trade-plate holder again (against my better judgement) but can assist for a cheap train ticket to car. Either the weekend of the 17th or 24th I'll be needing to go and get Sis_Sterlings roffle win Micra so one of those weekends will be out.

No idea at this point. bit of a once over and a polish/clean seems to be favourite. Then we'll see. Love the saloon thing tbh.

Did any 2CVs have opening rear windows? None of mine have.

Mind you, the modern DS4 doesn't have opening rear windows, and that's supposed to be a "posh" car.

Sorry, bit late to this, but only British-built 2CVs and Spanish-built Dyanes had opening rear windows.

As for base top trumps, the Invacar is so base that it doesn't even have a model name. It's just blank on the V5.

Unfortunately, this has all gone to shit - and, in the spirit of full disclosure, I wanted to post publicly all correspondence between myself and the seller so that

1) Mally can see that I'm not always having a go at the guy and that

2) It was the vendor that withdrew from the deal.

Below are the screenshots from our conversations this afternoon.

I am thoroughly embarrassed by this whole saga, and have refunded 'Red5' his money in full via Paypal.  I'm absolutely resigned to the fact that I will never see my deposit again, which is ironic seeing as I wasn't even buying the car for myself.

Anyway, there's the full disclosure.

Perhaps I'm too trusting? Maybe it was a scam all along?? Either way - it was me at fault, and therefore it must be me that pays the financial penalty.  I'm going to take over some grocieries, anonymously, tomorrow - on the off chance that he really doesn't have anything in the cupboards.  There was a stage 1 car seat in the mondeo when I drove it, and I don't want that sat on my conscience too.  If i've scammed out of £50, it might as well be £75.

I feel humiliated.  Contrary to what one or two may think of me, I was just trying to do someone a good turn.

I think I need a new hobby.

Firstly he does sound genuine. I'm the first person to go nuclear over money owed to me but I can't help but think that he's gone to a lot of trouble for £50.

Secondly is there the option of renegotiating a lower price and picking it up in a month or so when he's on his feet?

Sad as it sounds if you're going to be out of pocket for doing another shiter a good turn I'll happily chip in a fiver towards getting your deposit back as I'm sure others would.

Thanks for the offer, Warren - but I won't be taking charity.  Not now, or ever.

I've just sent the guy a message saying:

Don't let it weigh too heavily on your mind.  We've all been on our arse at one stage, just keep swimming.  Let me know when you've got some money together - or another car - and we can resolve it then.  Make sure your other half isn't worrying about it all either.  It's only money.  Chin up.

I reckon, when I'm old and windowed, I'll be on every suckers list in the country.
