What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I needle gunned the disco chassis at the back and didn't manage to make any extra holes. So maybe it's not as knackered as I'd thought. I'm trying expensive epoxy mastic paint this time after the dismal failure of aldi's finest paint.

sadly for the vulcan this year will be the last season for flying.

the airworthiness certificate is been withdrawn, and then that is that.

as XH558 has flown 3 times as many hours as another, and the engines have twice as many hours as any others have done, she has done ok.

so that is a major grump.

but today's run home was without stress, queues etc, the only cool vehicles i saw were a routemaster bus on the A19 near Yarm, and a chevette hsr and a tricked out mark 2 escort, both on the A174 which was nice, but the chevette was nicer,

That's a shame, but not surprising. I watched it last year at farnborough air show from my patio- it makes a fantastic noise. It also appeared regularly over my sisters house in Appleton during the Abingdon sir show.

Funny. I saw the Vulcan yesterday afternoon on the way back from work, I was about 1/2 a mile from home when I saw something unusual in the sky, the realised it was the Vulcan...it was heading south along the Ancholme Valley...

Yes, for a stealth fighter, it's not exactly subtle!

Why are they suddenly deciding it can't fly? Surely it could be massively overhauled, or even rebuilt, if the age and 'mileage' is a problem? I mean, there must be enough enthusiasts around to fund and carry out the work? Or is it more like the plane equivalent of an asthmatic LDV Convoy in a LEZ?

with the vulcan, the certifying authority have said that it is an unknown number of unknowns with the areocraft.

it is a similar situation to that with Concorde, a lack of spares and the general age of the aircraft and the hours run up. it is also with the airframe the bits that are hidden from view like the internal condition of the main spar in the wings. even if it was pulled apart, it would still be nigh on impossible to inspect, and this is remember a very large 55 year old jet.

plus the group looking after the plane are all getting old. it is made up of guys who worked on and flew the type with the raf, so old age sadly is catching up with them as well as with XH558.

the plan is to use her as the centre piece in her hanger, and keep her in ground running condition at a technical colledge thing at Finningley training kids on apprenticeships in aerospace. so hopefully some good will come out of her retirement.

I understand what's you use said about the Vulcan and also don't. I mean the RAF kept VC10's and other stuff well over the age of the Vulcan flying.

If the moneys there and at the moment the skills (which can be passed on) then do a full strip down and use ultrasound on all the major stress point replacing as necessary.

i think the recent crash of a bac lightening in south africa and death of the pilot has got people thinking.

as for the future of XH558, last year the CAA was making noises concerning the safety or otherwise of the vulcan's fuel tanks.

with stull such as the lightnings and buccaneers, the CAA have always said that they will not certify one for flying no matter what. it is like they don't like the idea of enthusiasts flying them, and they worry about a crash.

it is very, very sad really, but that is basically both what i've been told/read.

i for one will mourn the passing of another british build icon.

Thanks for mentioning the Vulcan chaps,  you've just reminded me to check when the Welshpool air show is on.  Three weeks time (shitefest +1) and the Vulcan is coming.  :D

Just seen the Vulcan flying over RAF Evelington! Was doing some really big slow turns then going straight up. I don't think I've seen one flying since about 1988 was most exciting. Shame we were driving past and couldn't stop

Incredible the way they can go straight up!

I was grovelling around under my Hillman Imp when one cruised over silently and then climbed straight up right above me.

Naturally wasn't aware of anything until the ground and car shook and the engine roar was stupefying.  Never come out from under a car so damned quick, thought the world was ending.

That was the first Sunderland Air Show.

As a kid was impressed seeing them all on an airfield on our way to Doncaster, seemed to be hundreds of them.

Without ranting it's the CAA thing that really passes me off. Do they honestly think k sounds going to bomb someone or something? The chances of a crap or also no worse than any other plane it's utter poo.

Still was really good to see it flying today and now I know it might be it's last year I'll definitely be going to a show

If I were sat in a grounded Vulcan doing fast taxi runs up and down an airfield, there is no way I would be able to resist whacking the throttles open, hauling back on the stick and taking the old crate for one last blat, and fuck the consequences.  Probably a good job I'm never going to be in that position then.

Sometime last year I was sniffing about through some old pics of cars I had spotted when I came across a White Rover R8 200, it was the cleanest I'd ever seen but when I checked up the plate again, it wasn't taxed so feared the worst. But on the way home from work I saw it being driven by an old giffer the other way so its great to know it's still around and as clean as when I saw it!

Landlord is a prick. Gave us mega list of stuff to do which is nonsense.

But reading arbitration any work we have to pay for the landlord can't make us pay full amount. Knowing what a cockwomble he is he won't want to pay a penny. He came all the way from Peterborough to fix a section of guttering rather than spend a penny on a builder.

So ha ha ha fucking ha. No point us splashing out for anything when he can share the cost.

I believe that when the Canadian Lancaster was over last year, they flew past the two Lancasters very low alongside the runway at Coningsby and the third one - that currently only has a "taxi" permit - taxied alongside them and may have accidentally got itself airborne for a second or two, once or twice. Allegedly.

Cryptic safety notice. It's a shaft and it's there to warn you of the mine shaft that is just behind it. You can see "Beware" on a tree on the other side of the shaft and a couple of other trees have "mine shaft" written on them with the same paint.

Optimistic ebay seller.

It's 11pm Saturday and I've just got a second chance offer on a motor that costs considerably more than you can take out of a cash machine in a day.

Any chance I could come before Monday and pay cash? They're off on holiday for 2 weeks leaving on Monday?

Yeah, sure, I have 6 bank cards I can withdraw the money on and I'm doing nothing on a bank holiday weekend..... Instead I politely informed them I'm not available.
