What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

Lying in bed, drinking tea this morning, discussing (like the Lord Byron that I am) what cars I'd like to own if I actually had any money with Mrs DW. Discussion naturally turned to the Ami 6. Mrs DW reckoned she could probably get used to left-hand drive. I seriously hope that 2015 sees us on a Leboncoin road trip adventure.

On the downside, this is giving voice to what to do about my 2CV. 'Bin it' still seems the inevitable course of action. That would leave me with suitable upgrade fodder to make an Ami a bit easier to live with... (the super-cute early ones are 6v and have 22bhp versions of the 602cc engine which is very different to later ones).

Someone has uploaded a whole host of old Thames News at 6 clips, some are just background, others are report pieces.

This is GREAT!

There's DRAMA:

There's ACTION:

VITAL bits of London SEALED OFF:

post-17021-0-39389700-1418500378_thumb.jpg

AND MORE:

You can't drink and drive in this Rover 213 with ignition breathalyser, watch me swig whiskey and try! (lots of traffic content)

"This tiny computer, the size of a video recorder..." keeping the motorways safe.

This one is filed under "TREES, WOODLAND, COPSE". Personally I would have filed it under "fatal plane crash", but I'm no journalist. Maybe I'm not seeing the wood for the trees.

This is why little girls want to be princesses. Diana visiting a milk carton production line. The milk carton production line supervisor tells her a funny joke about milk carton production, she laughs, we don't hear it. I can lip read, I think it was "knock knock. Who's there? Interrupting Cow. Interrupting Co... MOOOOOOO".

Long one of a dumped Toledo being towed away.

I was born in this hospital. This stock footage of the car park (boring, even by stock footage of car parks standards) will make a great memento.

I think it's actually impossible to imagine you without a 2CV.

There was a time when I existed without them. 30th July 1996 was the last time. Though technically by that date, I had put down a deposit on one...

There have been times when I've not had one on the road, but only while this one was being restored, and the first time, I think I had a Dyane while the 2CV was being rebuilt. It's a continuous history otherwise. Incredible for one who flits from car to car so readily.

Those Thames TV bits, the earlier ones seem to be without voiceover. I can't tell whether or not this is because it was the clips before the voice was added or whether in those days the reported just dubbed over it live? Probably the former mind you.

When I was a much younger CMS I spent a LOT of time driving Ford Cargos, we had six, a pair of 0609s, a trio of 0813s and a 1011. That sound is still one of my favourite mechanical noises of ever.

Went for a small walk along the canal with Mrs and little alabama Shrimp. Although frosty, was warm in the sun and my son really enjoyed breaking the ice on the puddles

The report is Dec 1987, but they clearly used rather older library footage of the traffic in the Euston underpass - newest car was V reg. Back in '87 the difference probably wasn't as apparent as it is now.

You may have noticed that I like a V8, so how about an antique bulldozer fitted with a train engine?

Notice the petrol 'starter motor'...bit more of an event than simply turning a key.

Went for a small walk along the icy-puddled lane with one terrier and 3yo fdb offsprog. Although frosty, was surprisingly bright in the moon and my son also really enjoyed breaking the ice on the puddles. (What is it with little boys and puddles, even especially icy ones?)

Thing is. it was 5am and he'd declared himself wide-awake (40 mins earlier).

Good sausages, bacon and home-made bread toast on return though,

Bikes are not my thing but like most folk I've been impressed by the arrival of Marquez in MotoGP last year. I liked this pic of him testing the 2015 Honda. He didn't like the handling it seems.

I'll have to try that on a Tomos.  Should be fun.

Better. Remember to ensure the inside pedal points upwards, otherwise you could fall off.

Discovered that I have adjustment for sensitivity for my auto wipers... this cheered me up no end, I NEED gadgets in my life!

Also....

Just been watching my insane Basset trying to eat raw onion and red peppers, oh and cucumber all slathered in salad cream and vinegar. He doesn't like it obviously going by the look in his face, but equally obviously, he HATES waste!  :)

Not car related grin.

I'm giving my niece an aquarium for Xmas (£26 ebay thank you) so I set it up last week to give it chance to cycle. To speed up the process I chucked in some gravel from my tank and used filter media. I then added 6 female and 3 male guppies ... 1 week later there appear to be a few baby guppies already, whoops, well I guess the water chemistry must be ok then.

Guppies, the rabbits of the sea.  Well... not sea exactly, but you know what I mean.

Lewis Hamilton won Sports Personality. Proper order. Rory McIlroy's a nice lad, but Formula 1 is a lot more difficult than golf.

I too have bought an engine:

£10. Doesn't start said the evilbay ad. They was not lying!

Anyone know anything about lawn mower engines? I has spark, but only 30 psi of compression which sounds a bit* low. But pull starter is shit, so maybe not wazzing it over fast enough to get a proper reading.

Plan is not to be cutting grass, but to build a lazy bastard deluxe shite moving device. I'm bored of carrying 30kg boxes of dice round the back, and definitely don't want to be carrying cubic meter bags of logs.

Simple, simple engines. Those carbs are horrible in my experience. See if you can find an earlier one with a Zenith updraught like on mine in the video.. easy to fix, easy to set up, rarely go wrong.

If you do try pull it apart, the nut on the flywheel is a backwards thread.. clockwise to undo it ;)

They're only about 7:1 compression normally.. it's probably got a sticky guide or rusty valve seat Being as it improved as you span it over, I'd say so. If there's a spark, it should run like that. Can't say how well.. but it should run.

Many happy hours puttering around the garden with ours.

You can also bolt them on to things, like this. This was a result of being bored. Mate of mine buzzing down the street on a kid's scooter with one powering it...

If not, those mowers do a real nice job of the traditional stripey English lawn..

How come Lewis Hamilton won Sports Personality of the Year? Surely you need to have a personality to be in with a chance. Amazing driver, but I would say more a 'sports dullard of the year', when he opens his mouth grey ambient noise comes out.

I've since swapped the engine for an earlier cast iron one (75cc?). Which runs on the dellorto carb off the original one at full beans, but won't idle. I have 2 of the zenith carbs, but they're in very poor condition. Think dumped in a garden for 10 years. I've tried a week soaking in paraffin, and am now on day 3 of buzzing them in the ultrasonic cleaner and tons of crap still keeps coming out :(

I 'follow' him on twitter. He really is a fucking bellend with the personality of a bowl of porridge with a chavvy cap on.

Yeah, OK, so I'm fashionably late. Finally watching Game of Thrones. The short guy and Jerome should totally have a spin off show - I LOL'ed:

Tyrion: "Do you think dipping his wick will cure him?"

Bronn: "There's no cure for being a cunt"

Strictly was great this weekend. Superb music by a very talented band.

Less talented were my efforts to play music for a ceilidh this evening. Still good fun, even though we were learning some songs just before we played them. I R ROCK STAH.

On the M62 after finishing my night shift, passed a vectra with a personal plate.

What's the point? Not exactly like you've made it in life, is it?
