The like button.  Of all the things to enjoy about the new forum, it's easily my favourite addition to this one.  If I change my mind, I can always go back an unlike a thing.

Insurance renewal for £211 fully comp? Well there's one good thing about getting older

Posted

I'm happy because despite it being well over a month since I bought a car, I can honestly say I do not want to buy another car. That's quite unusual for me. I don't want to sell one either. The Merc will hopefully get some welder attention next week and possibly the brake overhaul it needs, the BX will just be used until I can get some of its issues sorted out, the Disco is gradually being fettled into a healthier state and the 2CV is the 2CV.

Remarkably, despite the fact my wife is away, I've barely looked at Ebay!

It'll not last. I've not really looked at gumtree or ebay much since I bough the XJR but give it another week and I'll be back feverishly hunting through it 5 times a day.

Peter James Insurance made me happy today by quoting £100 less than my previous insurer for a much better policy !!!

Many thanks to all the 'shitters who have recommended them on here ! They are indeed brilliant !

Not sure, gentlemen. If it was a hand-painted, MoT-less Rialto estate with a blowup doll in the back, I would certainly cheer.

But not for a proper Supervan, especially one that appeared reasonably original and looked after, despite the hideous Trotterisation.

I feel sorry for the guy, I'd be gutted if I was him, as for the Daily Fail keep calling it a Robin though...

Just been accosted at the local non-specific far eastern cuisine establishment by two older people in a Vauxhall Zafira who, at one point, had a J-reg Flame Red Rover Montego 1.6LX auto saloon.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone so excited to see anything, ever.

Well, if he had allocated his hard earned to sorting electrics and fuel supply, instead of wasting it on yet another fuggin Trotterisation, he'd still have his van.

It still doesn't feel right to be gloating over someones pride and joy going up in flames though.

Just watching CarCraft getting a pounding on some shite bbc1 consumer TV program. How do you sleep at night Billy? :)

To be fair the stuff they're up to is probably no different to the other 90% of car dealers out there.

They'll still be in business as long as people are thick enough to be taken in by some polished up ex-rep mobile and a shiny suited, brillo-toothed salesman.

I sleep at night on a pillow of £250 notes..

I'm in the same boat, except for me it's been over 18 months since I've bought a car. I must be slipping, I think I bought four cars in 2010 alone.

I was amused to see that a local bus company who otherwise run modern, clean vehicles, still have a heavily tidemarked P-reg LDV Convoy minibus on their fleet for hire.  What that must be like after 15+ years of private hire use I do not know.

I have a quandary with the Trotter van.  JOY at seeing a Trotter Van eliminated.  SAD at seeing someone's pride and joy up in smoke, particularly a proper Supervan.  I feel the owner's pain, but some small part of me feels that the Gods have judged and found him wanting.

Talking of shite hire, a van hire company has set up recently not far from here. Happily, the vehicles they are using all seem to be well over 10 years old and they even boast an Escort van for hire at £25 a day! I needed to move some shite recently and would have hired the Escrot but unfortunately I'm not over 25 for their insurance purposes.

Next time I need a van I'm making the trek to Essex, how old and shabby some of those are!  The oldest one I know of is a firm in Plymouth my sister used who rented her a very tired and saggy 11 year old Transit Luton - they failed to notice any difference to its appearance on its return after she wedged it under a bridge.

A local van hire firm near here who now have a spiffy fleet of shiny LDVs and Transits started off a few years back with a rather stained and dilapidated Fiat Fiorino van at the bottom end of their offerings - alas, no more - surely there's a market for dirt cheap van hire, a fleet of ex-BT smiley Transits and ex-PO Escort 55 vans would have the punters flocking* in.

That Escort van they're hiring out is 14 years old and has had 10 previous owners! I hope it's got something like 250,000 miles on the clock, smokes heavily on startup and has "patchwork quilt" sills.

LOL at them calling it easy van hire and painting everything orange. Judging by the pictures on their Twitter, they're quite proud of the Escort Van.

I'm amazed nobody has hired that Luton Transit under a false name, sold the engine to an exporter and put the body on Gumtree.

Anyone else wanting to watch this:

The Carcraft segment starts at 10:15. All about the hard sell, nothing we didn't know, except that they'll drive you to London to see your sister if you want.

More fun is the KwikFit segment, which starts at 31:15 (and concludes at 43:20 after the bit about insurance).

I described the Allegro that Sigmund Fraud is selling and Dad said "that sounds like Rafferty's Car" to which my blank face prompted a Youtube hunt for a song that could very well be the Irish Autoshite division's anthem.

They've also got a knackered LDV Convoy luton as well, I saw it trundling down the seafront today! Haven't seen the Escort out yet, but I've seen most of the others, particularly the lutons. They seem to be doing very well for a new company, probably because they're cheap.
