What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

Today I have been grinning about car insurance, believe it or not.

Every time I've done a new quote for the Merc's insurance over the last month or two it's been getting cheaper and cheaper. Today we're down to £304, from £450 last year. :D

The smile may be wiped off my face tomorrow when it goes in for its MOT...

Bonus item.

Went to the barbers for a trim. Reunited with jacket I lost two months ago and have been trying to find. Save myself £80 in the process.

Crate heading their way toot suite.

I had a nice crisp £20 note through the door today from KGF Classic Cars after I guess the nearest finishing price of the Triumph Spitfire they were selling on a Facebook competition, I was only £52 out, glad I bid the price up now.

That might actually be the real Warren G. If I recall rightly he was the cousin of Dustin Gee but dropped the 'ee' to be more street and distance himself from Les Dennis.

Just found this on another forum. Be sure to change your timing belts regularly, kids!

One of my sister's tyres blew out this morning on a bit of the M60 without a hard shoulder. Breakdown service never turned up, but a passing policeman stopped and changed the wheel for her (that's the grin!).

Look at the state of the tyre:

What the hell caused that?

A number of things, I'd have thought. One possibility is it had been under inflated for a while and the sidewall blew out as it was weakened.

Timing belt failure you say?

For the record, 1.3 engines in Mk3 Polos are interference. I fished the two missing valve heads out of the crank case but it was no good, I couldn't make it work again.

Bought a new polishing mop as recommended by Trig and Mr_Spudz and its damn good. Set to work on a door on Mrs_Lobstas Mazda and the scratches have vanished and its come up a treat!

"When did you last check your tyre pressures?"

" .... "

She drives 90 miles a day. I think the most likely cause has been found.

What are these two huge tape recorders, or are they film editing gear? They have a sort of industrial/military look to them.

^That picture is all kinds of excellent.

I just had a stroke of Princess related luck. Here's hoping it pans out, I hope I don't jinx myself by making this post.

They are Tobin Telecine Machines. They convert old Standard 8mm and super 8 cinefilm (the kind you used in home movies before the 1980's VCR age) in to a normal video signal. The machine projects the images into CCD sensor (like the kind you get in a digital camera) that's synchronised to the speed of the machine so they don't flicker. I can then record the film on a dvd or capture it on the MAC. I've got another one that does 16mm too.

I bought them at huge expense couple of years ago to start a small business converting old film but I ran out of money for advertising... etc. I do the odd job on them but its not paying its way at the moment. :?

Loosely related to cine film, I've just been reminded of all the shite I used to buy at car boot sales as a teenager. One such thing being a faulty Eumig P8 8mm projector. For some ridiculous reason their belt drive pulley is live, a discovery I made by probing it with a screwdriver while it was plugged in.

I got loads of electric shocks messing about with old electronics, I'm really quite surprised I never got a sudden education about high voltage with all the CRT TVs and monitors I ignorantly dismantled.

Many years ago a friend of mine got himself quite seriously messed up with a shock from a big old TV tube, afterwards, any time it came to switching on something being repaired his hands would start to tremble, watching him adjusting something powered up was quite funny, screwdriver shaking all over the place, and when I'd creep up right behind him and batter an old PC case with a hammer he'd jump out of his skin, however many times I did it.

It looks like I'm off to Belfast for a couple of days with work at the end of the month.

It's not the most glamorous location for a trip, but it'll be my first trip this company that involves a plane :D

I got thrown clear across a room removing an anode plug from a PYE 26" set many years ago. It hurt in ways I can't even describe - I've been in car accidents, had impacted molars and broken bones that hurt less than that did so I can see your friend's side of things. Having said that, the thing it taught me was always to ground out the tube before removing the plug instead of relying on insulation to save me.

I found out I'm going to Florida with with work in 3 weeks. It's only for 5 days and it's to go to a work trade show. It is an automotive trade show though so I'm hoping there's going to be plenty metal to perv over. I fancied hiring a Camero for a day, which I thought would be easy but all the hire companies seem to just do non specific ameriblobs.

Posted

Have you tried the Hertz "Adrenaline" offers? Available in Orlando..... dunno about others. That's after 10 minutes of Googling...

Posted

No I'll have a look at that though. Some of the hire places say they have Cameros but when you look at the fine print it says * or simliar, which would probably turn out to be a Sebring convertible or something.
