What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I've said before I like obscure old planes. Just spent a week hopping around Laos in these:

Chinese built MA26 - these really vibrate when the engines get out of balance. Left hand wheel took 3 attempts to get down.

Old Let - russian, old and great in thunderstorms.

Actually, this is in the grin thread because I'm still here in one piece.

I was delivering a sierra back to it's owner last night (on the LT) and about halfway there I noticed a white van in my mirror carving it's way through the traffic at a fair old lick. As it got closer I noticed it was a/ new and b/ driven by a guy in a clean Hi-Viz... he sat behind me for a short while, then overtook. Over the next hill I saw him sitting in a layby, he pulled out again behind me and followed me for 5 miles through Stockton-on-Tees. I was starting to wonder (a lot) about what he wanted and when exactly I was going to get pulled over..

He pulled alongside at a set of lights, wound down his passenger window. I wound my window down too, and looked out at him (still a bit worried)

"Is that sierra for sale, mate? I'm looking for a good standard one...."

PHEW!!!!!

Aye, well when you live in a part of the world that isn't entirely populated by gun-slingin', pickup-drivin' * rednecks, finding a bullet lying around is quite an unusual occurrence.

*I was going to add sister-shaggin', but living in Norfolk I felt that might come across a tad hypocritical.

"The underneath is like new" said my local friendly MOT inspector as he passed my GTI today with no advisories. It has been off the road close to two years so well chuffed :D

"THE HORROR..... THE HORROR....."

i know that gadji (not as a friend, but ive met and spoken to him several times)

he's the sort of man who would report you to the police for cursing and not praising god, so a .22 bullet demands full media coverage and a beard trim

My current cause for grinnage on Thursday evenings is that I'm loving my new role as drummer at orchestra. For the last few weeks, following putting my hand up and saying yeah, I'll give it a go, I've been playing kit in arrangements of Star Wars, Superman, Pirates of the Caribbean, Evita, Apollo 15 and Les Miserables. Since I joined the oboe section over 3 years ago we've lacked a drummer, with a timpanist providing the only percussion.

I've never played kit before - I never had the opportunity, but have always wanted to. I have Band Hero - which is where I nabbed the sticks from... but my only practice with the real thing is at rehearsals. Each week I've been gradually adding more and more items, and have become confident enough to attempt the more complicated stuff that I simplified previously. I'm calling on all my years of experience, sense of rhythm and skill at sight-reading, and the conductor has given me lots of encouragement and told me tonight that I've been improving each week!

Some of these arrangements don't have very inspiring oboe parts - and there are four of us! so I'm finding the kit a welcome and exciting change.

The concert's in 3 weeks - no pressure!! I'm inviting my family but not telling them that I'll be playing drums - I want to surprise them

^nice^ drumming's not that complicated if you have a sense of rhythm and can sit on a stool with your legs not/barely touching the floor... look forward to the videos!

I still need to work on my drumroll - it's getting there! - I'm getting better at flams and drags, but want to get a handle on doing bounced notes on the beat - both duple and triplet... i.e. using the various "paradiddle" techniques.

Mark.

EDIT: I didn't think about video... I could try and get someone to film a bit of the concert! :)

I gave up on rolls and diddles after a year of lessons... wish I hadn't, but with the kind of messy rock bands I usually play(ed) in it's no problem

Hehe... what sort of stuff did/do you play?

It's lucky that the school where we rehearse hosts all the local council youth bands/orchestras so has all the kit I could possibly want :D I'm getting lots of encouragement from the other players too which is nice - and my wife plays violin, so I think she's enjoying the "who's that playing drums?" ... "My husband"

Mostly alternative, messy and noisy pop/rock (for instance with two drummers & a baritone guitar). Here's a relatively sane song we recorded with the current, incredibly lazy but fun band The Ik Jan Cremers:

Just been for a blast on the scooter and had forgotten how much fun it can be. Only did about four or five miles but was only supposed to be going about half a mile to try it out ready for the forthcoming season.

Everything seems in order, it ticked over fine and ran well and once I've had the bodged up clutch cable replaced it should be fit for some nice run outs soon. Hoping to go on quite a few this year and there's a couple of egg runs coming up soon which should be good. Fingers firmly crossed for the works bonus this month so I can get a stable mate of the Lambretta persuasion to keep it company.

I've only had chance to play on a drum kit a few times, and I loved it. I even had a couple of lessons at one stage as years of playing air-drums (everyone else can play air guitar!) has obviously rubbed off on me.

And before you laugh at me for playing air-drums, check this out.

EDIT - improved link now in place.

Like most things - many can do it, but only a few can do it well...

I had a little laugh to myself earlier when i saw a 10 plate BMW Mini Countyman being pushed through heavy traffic in Colchester as it had broken down.

That's great Trigger! Last week I was out in the A35 when I saw two blokes pushing a newish Porsche along the road. As I trundled past I grinned and gave one of them the thumbs up - he didn't look very pleased!

This makes me grin lots. Anyone who is bored anytime should try doing something they never did before.

Fun? Ah yes, the employment of time in a profitless and non-practical way.

Will you adopt me Scary?

All I ever get is "What are you messing with that for?".

Need a bed so I braved Ikea and found a nice one - £149 for the frame, and £150+ for a mattress depending on quality. I didn't buy it there and then, as I was in Leeds Ikea with the good lady and I don't live near Leeds so delivery was a hassle.

Went on eBay today, found the same thing in mint condition with a mattress used twice, about 10 miles up the road. Bidded with 5 mins to go, won it for £99!

As a bonus, I facebooked one of the managers at work and he's agreed to let me have a works van overnight to go get it, so even saved on getting it fetched.
