"FUPPIN SCENE TAX OLD VWS ETC ETC"

Just picked this up for £380. Tested for ages, drives brilliant! No idea what to do with it, I only bought it because it was cheap. Looks nice sat on the drive though.

Take wheels and grille off. Sell for several thousands, weigh the rest in. Especially the latter.

Yay!

My winter tyres have just arrived.

Which ones did you go for? Hope the new year brings snow to try them out on.

Just sell it as it is, someone who wears surf shorts in winter will have it off you for a guaranteed profit

I know this should go in the grumpy thread, but why the obsession with making out every lowered Golf is full of scene tax and only of interest to idiots, and should be crushed?

Clearly it's not scene taxed, it was only £380. In fact Mk2 prices are pretty reasonable, £700 buys a bloody good one. It looks good lowered and the wheels suit it. Plenty of members here have non-original wheels on their cars but only VW owners get branded as mongs.

I could understand it if it had been ruined with rust, camo paint and idiotic mods but that looks fine.

I don't like modifying at all really and would never ever want to reduce the amount of suspension travel a car has - most don't have enough in the first place! Look at my fleet - I'm clearly a fan of axle articulation! (in fact, it'd be fun to see which has more axle travel - 2CV, Landy or BX!)

If you like it, it's your car, so congratulations.

I also suspect that the persons responsible for modifying the suspension didn't do anything like the R&D that VW spent millions of deutchmarks on.

I'd want to know how much the weight penalty is for those wheels. My Audi had Khan wheels on it when I got it and they weighed about twice that of the S3 wheels it has now. I suspect that Golf doesn't handle or ride as well as when it was new and will probably consume suspension parts a lot faster.

I'd be surprised if it hits the bumpstops during normal use though, so I can't imagine there being more wear in the suspension. And I could probably get my stock height cars to bottom out if I tried hard enough. A more uncomfortable ride perhaps, but is that not safer in the corners? Less roll surely means less weight transfer and more stability - I certainly feel safer going into a corner quickly in a "stiff" car.

Not all wheels are heavier. My MAG Industries 4x100s are lighter than the 195/65R15s wrapped around them, and lighter than the equivalent steelies.

I've only ever owned two lowered cars. The first was a Nissan Primera P10, 2.0 SLX. It's the only car I've ever owned that would hold 80mph all the way along the back road up from the village without twitching. The second is the Skoda Estelle I currently own, which handles like an oversized tail-happy go-kart. I don't think sensible lowering is a problem - after all, the factory suspension setup is almost invariably a compromise between ride comfort and handling, and if you're prepared to forego some of the former there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to gain a little of the latter. Especially when, as in the Skoda, the cheapo factory shocks have been replaced with Spax adjustables.

Now HERE speaks a true Autoshitist! The above is precisely the spirit that keeps cheap old cars in circulation when they would otherwise be crushed, thereby wasting the planetary resources it took to make them in the first place. Well done Cobblers!

I guess, but in my experience the spring-choppers are more likely to go to work on something you can't easily get lowering kits for. There's lowering springs for a Mk2 for £70 a set, or full-on coilovers for £140. I've seen more VWs on bags (giving them impression of fucked suspension, till you hoik it up and drive off) than I have on badly chopped springs, and most guys seem to at least recognise the value of a set of purpose-made springs.

I'd reckon on most stuff, 30-40mm is fair game and doesn't lose too much comfort.

I'll just leave this here as an example of spack-slamming, it does make me grin as it looks absolutely f*cking ridiculous. The owner reckoned it looked great...

Right, screw the lowering, it's gonna be one of those things that makes us all unique :)

My grin for today - had a conversation about my new job. I asked to go back to my previous job, fixing shit instead of teaching people to fix shit. It was sort of a case of we both knew that they'd use my talents elsewhere though and it was only a paperwork move. I hoped. I've got a lot of experience in the new computer systems they introduced last year, to the point they've been sending me off around the country to support it.

Me: So..... what do you want me to be doing then?

New boss: What do you want to do?

Me: This sounds dangerous, shouldn't you be telling me?

New Boss: Meh!

Me: Systems support? I enjoy that.

New Boss: OK. Sounds fair. Oh, and don't worry about the 6am-5pm shifts you're meant to be on, just keep doing the daytime stuff.

Tomorrow I push my luck and ask for a blackberry and laptop....

To me it's because almost every single 'modified' Golf (especially the Mk2) looks the same. Different grille, lowered and non-o.e alloys, If you'll pardon the crap pun 'scene one, scene them all'.

I can have a "company" car, but they are in fact just lease cars now - there were a load of cars already in the company not being used, so they offered them out.

£200/month gets you a taxed, insured 1.6TDCI 09-reg Focus in a choice of Silver or Silver. I'd rather not, thanks!

I like that. IMk2 Golf is on my list for the near future, that doesn't look at all bad especially at that price :D

I'm more suspicious of the battery.

A battery running free in a front garden in Rotherham that's not been spirited away in the back of a transit tipper?

I don't believe it.

They will climb over the spikey iron fence hidden up the side of the house to steal a single 106 front wing that was left there for 3 hours, but the pile of scrap steel sheet has been left at the bottom of the drive for 8 weeks, and the battery has been there for about a week without being touched. I used to think I could out-think these criminals, but it seems not. I might just padlock the scrap to the fence and I'm sure it'll be gone in minutes!

It makes me grin that there are (approximately) 512,000,000 results on Google for "stuff". I mean, really; is there that much "stuff" on the web? I'm sure there's more.

It's heartening that the net isn't such a bad place after all; "stuff" outweighs "shite" 125-1. Thankfully, there's only 355,000 items of "pointless stuff". So all's rosy in the garden, then!

Funny enough, if you google "Trig's Christmas Jumper" and then click images, I am the top result.

Made me grin anyway.
