Drove up to the land of Volvos and square sausage today. Got another friend in tow who doesn't particularly do long journeys. We stopped at Scotch Corner first then at Gretna Green. Leaving Gretna I'm surprised to see my friend turn left when Google Maps says to turn right.

They had somehow managed to set their maps to Scotch Corner again, and realised when they passed a farm shop 5 miles away from it...

Sorting out my emails, and although I normally just nuke all the shit in my junk mail folder without even looking at it (you know the sort of thing... free online casino spins, discount dick pills, hot bored housewives in my area and, for some reason, Anglian Windows), today I scrolled down briefly.

Yeah yeah, the usual assorted scams and identically poorly-worded ransom demands claiming I collected all your private data and I RECORDED YOU (through your cam) SATISFYING YOURSELF!  YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN! I will release this footage to all your email and social media contacts and your reputation will be RUINED FOREVER!!

Yeah, by all means go ahead and release footage of me scrolling through eBay listings for hopelessly corroded end-of-life cars. It's not like it's a secret to my long-suffering friends, family and colleagues. I'm not going to send you £1400 in BitCoin; hell, I could get that green Senator on Buy It Now for that sort of cash...

But the main reason for the grin was that, amid all the scam competitions, there was a genuine competition win that I nearly deleted - a code for a £50 voucher from Oxford Diecast, in a recent prize draw (which I did enter).

Wasn't 100% sure of the legitimacy at first, but I navigated to their website separately, made a few selections from their catalogue and the code was accepted at the checkout so... guess I'll wait and see what arrives!

I entered that competition too but kept up my streak of never winning anything. Spotted a familiar name among the winners and assumed it must be you so I was a bit surprised you hadn't commented here. New free stuff to show off in the Shite in Miniature thread!

It was just as well I checked - I've the junk folder set to auto-delete spam after 10 days, and the email with the code was less than an hour from being wiped when I opened it!

I had a similar experience on holiday in Spain about 30 years ago.  Apart from my wife and I, (30ish), there was a younger couple with a baby, but the rest of the “guests” probably averaged over 75. One of them actually died during the fortnight we were there.

To fair, if Gretna was typical of Scotland and that's all you'd ever seen, you'd turn right on leaving and give the rest of Scotland a miss. Luckily most of Scotland isn't like Gretna.

Well done Datsun! My happy is also Oxford Diecast related, although unlike you I'll have to pay for the privilege.

Oxford are (hopefully) releasing this, a teeny 'railway scale' County 1884 next year. Praying it doesn't get mired in development hell.
