Sad to hear that John Noakes (Blue Peter fame) has Alzheimers. Seems we got lost whilst walking near his home in blistering temperatures and was missing for quite a while. Now getting rehydrated in hospital.

MGF has developed an oil leak that rivals the Exxon Valdez in the pollution stakes. I've got Friday off to replace the exhaust flexi, so I guess I'm doing a cambox gasket as well.

Grin: boss has purchased me a new shift bus; in true SVM style it's a '93 K Volvo B10M Mk.3 with facelift Van Hool Alizee T8 bodywork. It replaces a Plaxton-bodied '88 F Volvo B10M Mk.2

Grump: It's got no MOT, no tax, no heaters, it's bright fucking orange and it's in Berkshire. Oh, and it looks like I'm going to get it on Friday.

Via Skegness. But I only have transport as far as Skegness, then I need to make my own way to Wokingham.

fml.

My only advice on this is 'Don't start from Skegness, it will only end badly.'.

Surely getting dropped off somewhere with transport links to civilisation would be better.

Collected the Rover 75 yesterday. Sorry for the lack of a collection thread. I sat in the traffic in the Kia for hours and when i collected it had 1/2 tank of diesel in it. I will get some photos up. Only faults i can see so far is the electric mirrors don't work and the temp gauge seems to move a lot, never overheats but nver really gets above quarter. Photo below. Any idea on what to check, temp sender maybe?

The boring has blown it's turbo, huge clouds of smoke followed by big puddle of oil ... arsebiscuits, and I was just about to treat it to some .216 injectors as well.

In one respect the timing is good as I've just finished my contract so am out of work and don't need the car for work. I did however have plans for this week that didn't involve fixing the boring. They involved getting builders quotes and me fixing the Honda/Merc/Tipo ... Oh and the boring is now at the garage 12 miles away and all my tools are in the boot so I won't be doing anything until I go and get them sometime tomorrow.

The local bailiffs have this up for sale next week. I believe it is a 1990 and has been restored with a galv chassis and many new panels. That is the complete description but it looks ok. So whats it worth ??

attachicon.gifp1390313_000.jpg

They also have this Vespa. Description is "Vespa 200 (Malossi 210) Scooter 1987"

attachicon.gifvespa.jpg

Again whats it worth as I have a possible customer for it if it isn't too shagged

Well these went through the auction today. The 2CV was very clean and had no rust at all. It was left hand drive and the fuel line was hanging down underneath. It was also leaning to one side and dripping fluid from the suspension unit. That didn't stop it going for £3900 plus 10% commission. The Vespa again was very tidy but no mot or paperwork same as the 2CV £1400. I didn't buy anything surprise surprise.

I've been quite busy today.

A couple of weeks ago I started refitting the Cortina's engine after fitting a GT camshaft and doing some work on the engine.

At this point I realised the engine mount was goosed, not only was the rubber peeling off the metal, but the thread was totally bollocksed as well.

Today I got a new mount from the club. I thought great, this will be a piece of piss.

Jacked up the engine, banged all the lock tabs out of the way, and removed the knackered mount.

Offered new mount and lock tabs up but one bolt was sitting at a weird angle and would most certainly bollocks the threads in the block if I was to try and tighten it.

Discovered the holes on the new mount were a bit off, so had to elongate the holes with a round file. This is a little bizarre as the part was new and definitely the right one, just sloppily made.

Anyway managed to get the engine mounted fully, and then reconnected most things. I just need to put some water in the radiator, change the oil filter, sump plug washer and fill it with oil.

I'll then wear the cam in at 2k revs for 20 minutes, I'm doing this all on the standard carb and exhaust manifold for now, as I know that one works.

Have finally had a bit of time to have another look at the Mercury Sable to attempt to get to the bottom of the speedometer/transmission issue. Couldn't understand why the 'check engine' light wasn't illuminated..... Oh.... Found out that both the bulb and bulb holder had been removed! That explains why the light didn't, err, light up then! (Not suggesting for a second that Eddy either knew this or did this by the way!) Not that it matters in regard to the problem. I bought it knowing full well that it had the problem.... The EML not being lit matters not, just wondered why it wasn't.

Anyway, one thing of possible interest is that if the car is started from cold, the shift lever moved back and forth through the full range, and then driven, the speedometer works instantly. But then stops again until the car is warm. Maybe a mile or so...

Sort of progress maybe? Am currently suspecting the transmission range sensor as being partly to blame.... Possibly.....maybe.... Although how and why the transmission range sensor can affect the speedometer is as yet unclear.

Still loving the car btw. A nice project and a lovely introduction to American cars. Always fancied one!

That's interesting!  Also makes me feel a bit foolish as I've had the dash out, and even photographed it out for the thread, and never noticed.  Oops!  Sorry...  Have you tried putting one of the other bulbs in the right place to see what lights up?

I'm glad you're enjoying yourself though.  I'd gone way past that point, in all the wrong directions, and the car does need to be loved.  Good luck!

It's bloody good. However we've found out the key doesn't work the central locking - it's infra red, and missing the bulb, so for all we know the battery might be dead too. Also, the driver's door lock doesn't work the central locking, and it needs two new mirrors as one is cracked and has a chipped glass, and the other one is just plain fucked.

Service history has the original dealer in Sheffield in it so I'm going to try and get a sample numberplate to send to DMB Graphics.

Old Man and I are excited to work on this.

Also, I found a compartment in the Bini dash I never knew was there:

I feel like I'm doing well with buying parts for this Sierra, so far of eBay I've bought a new Lucas Coil, a Gates cambelt, 4 new Champion plugs, new car mats, a set of new Motorcraft plug leads and a set of 15" Focus Edge alloy wheels with good tyres all for £82 delivered! That feels like good value to me!. I look forwards to fitting it all now.

Well done Trigger, that looks far more sensible than my ebay purchases page.

Saw a high speed convoy of hearses being escorted down the M40 tonight. I'm not usually a sensitive soul, but it brought a tear to my eye and when I dropped off my passenger I texted my kids that I loved them.

Responses ranged from 'what have you done now?' Are you drunk? and are you dying? - I hate my kids!

Trig, I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't get genuine Sierra mats or at least tailored ones. I did see some on there, mind at a tenner for stuff you put your feet on ain't bad. If I come across some Sierra mats, I'll see to it they find thier way down to your Sierra.

You star, thanks Rob! At the moment I'm just focusing on getting it sorted for a mot as I haven't decided if I'm going to keep it yet, the 1.8 CVH LX isn't a model I'd pick by choice if I'm honest but it's so tidy, the interior is mint hence the cheap mats for now.

Im not an expert on the Diesels but you could have a sticky thermostat? Diesels can sometimes run too cool. Why don't you monitor the actual coolant temp by using the onboard temp gauge, this is how;

Normal operating temperature for the petrol engines is between 90 and 100*c, the Diesels probably aren't too different.

a) Put key into ignition and turn it to position 1 (instruments activated).

a2) If you intend driving with diagnostic mode active, start the engine now.

B) Press and hold the trip reset button. This is the button sticking out near the speedometer.

c) Your LCD display will show "test 1.-"

d) Immediately press the reset button every half second until you get to "test 19.-". (19.0 allows access to diagnostic mode)

e) The display will now show alternating "Log 1 -on" / "Log 1 -off"

f) While it shows "Log 1 -off" press the reset button and. .

g) With no delay press within a half second until number 7, then your coolant temp will appear

I'm guessing they'll be the Tunisia shooting victims, absolutely horrific stuff, no wonder you felt like that, I would have been the same.

Thanks for this, i will have a look tonight. I will get a photo up soon. Interior is mint, cleaned it up last night. Exterior is very straight, just a shame every panel has been keyed  but that will be fixed soon. It really is a lovely place to be, only driven it 50 miles so far but it really is nice.

I have some pipe to replace the leaky leaf-off pipe on the XM. Have a ton of work to get through, then I hope to dodge the showers and get it done this afternoon. Wondering if I'll need to bleed the injectors afterwards and if so, how on earth you do that. Tomorrow, a 200-mile drive to Cambs!

crack the pipes on top of the injectors one at a time and check you are getting fuel to there. if so it should be ok.

take it easy with removing the old leakoff pipes-breaking the connector on the injector is a cause for :(

Ah, thanks for the tip and words of warning. They look like the original pipes, so getting them off could indeed be an adventure.

DUH. I'm being stupid aren't I? It doesn't really matter if there's air in the leak-off pipes - that won't affect flow to the injector.

Mate drives a 185k-mile D-reg 205 diesel.

Mate's missus drives an 11-plate Corsa.

Corsa has just eaten it's timing chain at 55k-miles... ouch.
