Swapped over the flat on the civis for the spare. It was a brand newish Pirelli p4000. Will do for now.

So with the continuing one step forward 3 back when I got the spare out there was an inch of water in the wheel well. Popped out a rubber bung and let it drain out. Another thing to fix 😞

The sun was almost shining so I took the mazda out for a blast round the back roads - officially I nipped out to get some cat food but was suspiciously gone for a couple of hours :)

I stopped on this quiet back road to take a pic and two passing cars stopped to see if I had broken down and needed help ! No, I'm just really sad and like taking pics of my car

Had a black ice-related off road excursion in the Wentworth on the way to work this morning, which resulted in the car and a roadside verge coming together in a decisive way:

I'm really glad that I decided at the last minute not to take The Volvo...

I'm not hurt, neither is anyone or anything else, but there's a very high chance that I'll be looking for another daily driver over the next week or so.

That's a shame but at least no ones hurt. Is it more than just bumper damage?.

I'd imagine a radiator and possibly an oilcooler?

There's a lot of heavy scratching on the river's side wing and bonnet, and I think that the front corner is pushed in a bit, as the driver's side headlight is now out of alignment. Mechanically, it seems unscathed; the car was fine on the 20 mile trip home at (mainly) dual carriageway speeds.

However, the damage is too much hassle for me to be done with, especially at this time of year and also because fixing it won't fix the rotting passenger side sill, the rusty passenger side front door, the inoperative speedometer, the heavy engine oil consumption and the multitude of paintwork and trim defects.

I think I'll end up swapping the wheels and tyres and any other 740-compatible bits onto The Volvo and weighing in the rest. They all have to die some time.

I noticed a scratch on my Volvo earlier, it's too much hassle for me to fix so I'm going to SCRAP IT.

Got the 18 recovered to the unit today, also big thanks to Richard who diagnosed two faulty glow plugs, so that's what I'll be ordering and fitting asap.

That's sad to see, Shep.  Have you thought of contacting the SVM Home for Battered Boxes?  They may be able to help.

In fairness to Shep, there comes a point where you tot up everything wrong with your car, divided into important/not important, and have to take a view whether you just sack it off and start again. Of that list I could live/deal with all of it except the sill, but then I can't weld.

The car's sill rot (probably caused by a substandard accident repair) is particularly distressing, as I had never come across a Volvo 700/900 with rusty door sills before I bought it. To fix it to my satisfaction would no doubt cost me a heck of a lot, as I have no welding or painting skills.

Really ? And it wouldn't fire on easy start? Are you sure it wasn't Squirty cream in the can ? :-)

It locked up and shot a flame out the inlet with the easy start, the battery runs out pretty fast when cranking over loads because the alternator is a bit past it.

When turning over without the easy start it sounded like two cylinders would fire and then it would do the stroke again and the same would happen.

It's bitterly cold up here at the minute so that can't be helping, but two glow plugs are definitely knackered.

I hope it is the glow plugs but a wee sniff of the bradex usually gets the buggers away.

I have found recently that brake cleaner works better in that application , its not as harsh on the engine and with practice you can run an engine on it pretty steadily . Good for diagnosis purposes .

After four years of ownership, the Atlantic has now left the fleet. A serial shiter came and drove it away last night. Pleasingly it made the 80-odd mile drive back with no problems, although it must have been a late night for all involved! It's gone to an excellent home though, where it will be improved mechanically and used as intended, but will remain unrestored. Can't ask for more than that really.

I may have bought a new car 😊

Ooh, ooh, what is it? Where are the pictures? :D

This beasty. Collecting it on Sat from Wrexham.

I am going to call time on current 405. This is bodily in better nick, without rust patches and stacks of history.

Current one I love but balance of niggles has finally put paid to my tolerance for it.

Well I can now confirm that driving an Austin A90 down the M25 in the dark is quite scary. Apart from that it was great, it goes really well and cruised at 55-60 the whole way back with no issues at all. It's now tucked up safe and sound in the shed, we'll take it to the pub next week at some point and then crack on with getting the clutch sorted. No more cars for a while now, we're at bursting point

For one so young, you haven't half owned some cracking cars, Barrett. The Atlantic is a drop dead gorgeous car, I doff my proverbial hat in your direction, sir.

It's not mine, it's for the magazine's collection! I will, however, take the compliment in the spirit in which is was intended

Edit: only took one photo because we were press in on, and it was dark

Pretty car.

I do like how ornate some 50s cars were, it looks a bit like a jukebox (in a good way).

Brother has just taken his W124 280e estate off the road, he bought it for next to nothing off a posh muppet who paid £5000 off a specialist* . My brother only wants the 4/5 valve out of the auto box for his 320 Cab., but he's driven round in it for 6 months including getting a payout when some dozy cow ran into it,writing it off.

Anyway the MOT ran out today and it's lost reverse. The rear springs aren't attached at one end and it needs a VIC ,so he's ripping the box out and weighing it in unless anybody wants it . It's got a new engine loom but if that fits a 320 he'll probably keep it. Engine's good got a good grey leather 7 seat interior and nice set of 8 holes.

It's in Milton Keynes, don't know what he wants for it,any interest pm me and I'll send you his number.

What are the alloys like? Any pics?

Sad news that the Atlantic is no longer part of the Dicky Fleet, but happy news that it has a worthy home deserving of it!
