All of my cars are broken.

Princess has fuel and sparks but refuses to run for more than a second.

Lancia has started chewing through its own alternator belt so needs to be replaced and try again to do the cam belt at the same time.

The fiesta suddenly went out of tune at speed on the m5 earlier and is now slow, stalls at idle and drinks fuel.

Some days sacking off old cars as a bad lot and buying a cosa or some other horrid modern air heap on finance does seem remarkably appealing.

Still not appealing enough to actually do it mind.

I doubt I will be getting a jag, but I am looking forward to replacing the diseasel vectra with something much more refined.

Like a Perkins 4.208 with a misfire and a loose exhaust ?

DW: your starter solenoid problem might just be the grease on the solenoid plunger. Sounds like you have turned it into a viscous damper. Clean and dry-lube.

Are these as amusingly miserable as they look?

Damn the crowds, the snotty cough, the drizzle and the winter winds, drove home the long way with the MR2 in al-fresco mode. Got home wearing a silly grin. Forgot to get half the things I went out for.

Ah, ok. It was bone dry and still causing a problem, which is why I lubed it. I can just about get the solenoid off without having to remove the whole starter so maybe I'll have another go tomorrow. I might even remember to put some bloody gloves on. #filthyfingernails

Phil, I think your cars are just sad that you're planning to abandon them.

I've had a totally shit day but it was cheered somewhat this arvo by going to my mate Rob's and getting this going.

I'd love the wallet Cort16 if its still available. Will match the disappointing grey 75 I've been trundling around in for the last two years perfectly!

Sorry it's already been claimed by another rover botherer

Don't know if anyone noticed but I've been in Lapland Finland for the last week.

Got married to my partner of 6yrs whilst we were out there (all pre arranged, no Vegas wedding lol )

Was going to give the Xantia a post-MoT wash, it's decidedly grey from being stood about for a couple of months. That didn't happen on account of the weather.

What did happen was I had another inspect under the rear seats because it rained last night.  No water at all, in fact the car was dryer than usual.  I'm fairly certain it's the door top seals now, the leak is intermittent which hints at it being affected by a seal changing, like it would with a door being opened and closed.  The top seals aren't too clever any way.

Must check the XM now I've covered those roof rack mounts. Not had any biblical rain for a few days though.

In other news, gave up and replaced the 2CV's starter motor with the spare one - after oiling the nose bearing. All is well. I even greased the kingpins, which is something I hate doing.

Yesterday I was advised that the Volvo (which is on loan) would not start and the battery had gone flat, but it would be ok as a new battery had been purchased. I had to go up the other house to get my spanners and duly went and changed the battery. The Volvo then spun over beautifully but would not fire up. " Is there any petrol in it?" I asked. Checked the gauge (with a torch as that side of the instrument lighting doesn't work) surprise, surprise gauge below the red, never seen it so low apart from when switched off. I put the lawnmower petrol in, still no start, stuck another gallon in, still no start, stuck another gallon in and it fired up - a bit spluttery but it was running. It probably didn't need the new battery at all. Now I know my mate is prone to driving around on the red, but, i have a funny feeling that this time someone might have helped themself to the petrol, if so they will have been disappointed as I doubt that there was much in it. I shall have to ask santa for a locking cap for it.

Hmmm, might be worth a sniff under the car as the quickest way to get petrol is a cut hose, or a screwdriver through the tank. Not sure you can completely drain a tank by siphoning.

I have checked and it does not appear to be leaking anywhere. The car was on a slope so there might have been a few dregs in the tank, I am dealing with someone who puts £10 at a time in a car that does about 20mpg and is surprised when it runs out, so it is possible it ran out on the drive, but I can't be sure.

I got home from work, looked at the Pioneer car stereo I wanted to fit in the Merc and decided to fit it in the car just now, even though it's dark and rainy.

It sounds great though looks a little complicated to use. I have also ran an AUX cable near to where I might stand my phone/tablet, stereo also has USB function. Brill!

First tune I stuck on running from my tablet was 'Black Mercedes' by Jan Hammer ;)

Right. I'm going to aim to spend the next two days not on the internet. A serious challenge - not necessarily a good state of affairs! Have marvellous Christmas times and see you on the other side.

Have a good one Ian! I have no such plans as I'm bidding on some shite that ends Christmas day, a present to myself you could say. BTW, what are the rules on driving something that's not T&Td? Pre-booked MoT without buying tax OK is it? Or are you expected to buy the tax with the new keeper supplement, despite the motor not having a test?

Wondering whether borrowing a trailer/A-frame will be a better bet, just involves more faff obviously.
