Hasn't Mr Livered still got the identical one you owned for a while?

If he has there is a chance of making 1 good un out of the 2. What this is like I have no idea 65.000 miles and a 1.1 so may not be too bad. I will have to reduce my Renault 5 fleet sometime though. I can't be greedy and have 2 of them

Did someone say XL250?

Here's mine from circa 1984

It needed a top end rebuild after the timing chain jumped.

Wasn't it the RS250 that had a single cylinder twin port engine, possibly from an XL250?

Technically that was the CB250RS - great little bikes, quicker than the 250 Superdream despite being nominally less powerful.  Handled better too.  Brakes were shite though - can't remember if they had the same cable disc as the CB125T, but it had about the same decelerative power.  Fortunately the engine braking was GR9.

I think they are different. Bx isn't on the list of the ones the do.

405 axle is different, the same as Citroen Berlingo/Peugeot Partner.

The replacement process should be more or less the same though.

Posted

I was meaning bearing replacement rather than axle replacement, although bringing it here for an axle swap at £15 an hour might be an option...?

Posted

Often, the shafts on 405/Berlingo axles are pitted beyond salvation once problems become apparent.

You can get new shafts but they need pressing in with much force, and shafts and bearing kits both sides doesn't cost far short of a full axle.

You may get lucky and just need to replace the bearings, but it's a fair bit of work dropping the axle and bashing out torsion bars etc to find out how bad it is.

Posted

Good to know, thanks - I had a feeling they were different to BXs which seems to be a bit of a feared job (and priced accordingly!) but really isn't too bad. So looks like an axle swap is the best bet.

Sister Vin and her other half are after a second car to go with her Alfa 156 I got via Barrett.

I picked this up locally at the weekend for £200. Spares or repair but still got MOT til July next year. 70k miles and a head gasket and skim 3 months ago. It's now doing the usual Punto cooling system gurgling and no hot air out the blowers. The lass lost interest and wanted rid. They are a bitch to bleed properly and it takes a few attempts to get it right...the expansion tank is lower than the heater matrix...you need to put them on ramps...

I'm gonna pressure test it and also do a leakdown test on it to see if HGF has happened again...fingers crossed it hasn't and it's just not been bled properly...Mind you if it is I'll put another HG on it cos this is Autoshite and we can't have the K-Series hogging the limelight...

I've binned the wheel trims for starters.

Specialist said that the amount of squealing meant they were eating into tubes. Replacing just the bearings wouldn't be enough.

Fear not found a place in Burnley that will do them for £340 plus £100 fitting and will do it in a day. Not great reviews about customer service but quite frankly if it fixes it I dont give a toss.

I used a decent machine polisher for the first time today and I think I've found my new favourite power tool.  Now all I can smell is polish and, incidentally, all anyone else near me can smell is polish.

The Flavia's 50 year old paint is much improved as are many of the very deep scratches in the roof.  As a result we're not repainting the whole car, instead we're going to repair the various stone chips and deeper scratches but keep some of the well-earned age.  Verdict is still out on whether or not it's going all dark grey or keeping the two tone.

Half-and-half shot, polished on the left of the image.  Unfortunately I dropped my good camera and terminally broke the lens on it so I had to rely on my fuzzy phone-cam.

Also, does anyone know what this sticker is for?  I'm sure I remember it being asked by someone else with one on a different car and it was for either a garage or a brand of oil.

What is your good camera?

I've just replaced the 17.5~45mm standardish lens on my Olympus E-500 with a 14-40mm and the old one is now redundant if you want it.

The last 30 miles of today's 950-mile epic were the most stressful thanks to MR TAILGATEY SOANDSO in a BMW 1-Series. Yes, I know the Lincoln to Grimsby road is a bit twisty, but I wasn't going that fast, and there were five or six places safe for overtaking. I give up.

Pah! Hull got it easy... I'm in Warrington ALL DAY today.

Despite thinking I'd despise it, I loved my 250 Superdream. £170 (on finance!) as I was desperate for wheels and it was brilliant. I'd go as far as to say for commuting you couldn't beat it: had plenty enough poke to flick in/out of traffic and use on bypasses, great on fuel and was easy to manoeuvre. A proper big brother to the brilliant CG125.

Vin: Do you happen to know if there's a common problem with the power steering on that era of Punto, please? My son's mate has bought one, said something about the light coming/going on the dash and the power steering sometimes packing in. I've not seen it yet and he doesn't know if it's got the 'City' button or not, so we haven't had a chance to plug the FCR in to see what it comes up with. The lad is on about going to the scrappy for a second hand power steering pump, I've suggested he hangs fire first.

News just in.

You CAN sell a car with tax, as long as you're a lying dealer and the reg nearly spells RENT.

...... so I'm here and have NO calls.

Sitting in Starbucks on the M6 - bored - shall I go in the bog and draw a cock&balls on the trap door?

.... using my tungsten tip scriber or my favourite lipstick??

Hey Vin, I've just been looking up the part number for a surplus NOS air filter lying around in my garage, and by happy coincidence it'll fit your Marea.  It's a decent CoopersFiaam one.  Yours for nowt if you PM me your address.

The answer is always yes.

Got a mint, same coloured tailgate for my little one's FIAT just now, courtesy of some bloke in Manchester who breaks Puntos. Cheapest previous quote was £90 for the bare item, not even trim included, this bloke has sold me a complete one with everything for £50. Happy days.

Civic wipers are strange. The down flick works but wont self park. The normal wipers work intermittently in as much as you turn them on and can take 15 seconds to start.

Rear wiper doesn't function although washer pump does

Any ideas? Relay or more likely to be the stalk?

Crash! New updated rocker arm bolts purchased from mercedes!

Bang! Tweaked air flow meter potentiometer!

Wallop! Adjusted oxygen sensor control ratio!

Result? Car now running marginally less like a bag of rusty spanners, advanced symptoms of can't be arsed plus beer and getting dark at half past 4 means my bastard hydraulic valve lifters are still in their box!

After ignoring it for yonks, the Cavalier is on the move, and will be going to a barn somewhere in the Yorkshire hinterland for assessment and perhaps repair.

I had to nip into town today, so I chose the 2CV. This was a mistake. I hadn't realised quite how blowy it is. You really feel the weather in a 2CV. At one stage, I could barely see where I was going, because I was too scared to take one hand off the steering wheel as I did battle with yonder gales. Column stalks are such a good idea.
