Wuv . Be careful checking the oil on those . If it's been parked up overnight then there will be no oil on the stick at all . You need to pull the stick and put it back in again . The dipstick tube must go down into the oil and when the engine runs the tube gets full of air and won't let the oil back up .

Worried the Shit out of me the first time I checked the oil on mine

Just back from the annual 2CV duck race at Farnham. Mine (team duck) was leading until half way and then got stuck in the weeds. Olivier and his son and friends won the adult's and children's races.

I recently cleaned out the filters on my Dyson.  They didn't look too bad when I took them out, but this is what emerged from the first rinse of the smaller filter

I've just been replacing some of my lights and have gone for LED ones where practicable.

They used to be crap but have improved a lot recently as well as becoming far less expensive.

My stairwell is always a bit gloomy and for the past 27 years have been going to remedy that.

Bought an LED luminary from China (eBay, eight quid) and fitted it last weekend.

At 2 Watts it is far brighter than you would expect and it is wired in to the back of the boiler currently (pro tem until I can be arsed to rake around in the attic as the solar panel fitters have buried everything up there) It is so cheap to run it is unswitched and lit all the time - solar panels run it free anyway.  As noted elsewhere my electric meter now runs backwards.

At night it is sufficient to light the whole staircase and landings despite being out of sight, saves turning the three 40W halogens on.

As with your kitchen lights, my daughter had a 4x50 halogen luminary that was always blowing bulbs.

Replaced them with 4x 4W LEDs for £6 (again eBay/China) and the light is far better, much more even and shadow free while being equally bright and they cost next to nothing to run and will theoretically last 16000 hours.

Just replaced all her staircase lights with LEDs yesterday.  Huge improvement over the 70% not working ones for £7 and a big saving in electricity.

My kitchen one had a terrifying rat's nest of wires behind it that I managed to mix up a bit and took an hour to rectify.  Also runs kitchen fan and exterior security lights.

@Moog:  glad to hear it's only really the bumper that's damaged, did well to stand up to a Land Rover at any speed.

I had one of those 4xGU10 fittings and it ran through bulbs at an alarming rate, wonder if there's some sort if issue with them.

I got rid after putting the light on as I went into the kitchen for a drink in the middle of the night, it exploded a bulb and the tripped the electrics. So I'm stood, surrounded by broken glass, barefoot in a pitch black house. Sweet.

any links to he LED lights you used?

We've got a mixture of standard bayonet fitting energy saving bulbs in most of the rooms, and  spotlights in the bathroom.

May be worth the upgrading if its literally plug and play

Went for a nice, sunny, hoon in the 2CV, as well as a coast walk. Parked up at the supermarket on the way back. Tin Snail had attracted Plastic Pig by the time we returned.

Yep, it worried me a bit too when I first pulled the dipstick out at the seller's dad's place.  Putting it back in revealed the true oil level though, and it was low (albeit only fractionally).

Just did the same in my kitchen. Got two lots of 4 spots and constantly blew bulbs. New led jobbies in(7w ftw) and it is so much more awesome. Cant recommend them enough

In good news agreed the cash price with the guy from yesterday. Money going into my account tomorrow. This way I won't end up with millions of cold calls offering to get me compensation for my injuries.

A++++ Gr8 accidenter highly recommende

Found quite a large stash of brochures culled from dealerships across the north west on Saturday night. Did some work in the loft for PARENTS_DUGONG and dragged the crate out as matter of course.
I had to take two files rammed full of folders out because they'd disintegrated. From what I can work out, they span roughly 1991-2000.

Some of the gems found so far. I found a couple of FSO pick-up brochures as well; I was into shite long before I became a shiter, it seems.

I got most of these by emptying the racks at garages. I'd tag along with FATHA_DUGONG to look at a new car, take his spare key with me, dredge the shelves of anything interesting
(the more tragic and ornate the model and brochure, the better, frankly) and bugger off back to his trade-in and read them. Anything interesting was kept and stored.

I can't imagine manufacturers would produce brochures like these any more. The Mercedes-Benz offerings were hard-backed and large format.

It seems more and more common for people NOT to claim because of the cost of insurance, particularly in our bracket of cars.  Makes it all the more galling that you have to pay for insurance in the first place.

Fitted my shiny new starter motor to the Humber. Result: nothing, as no power seems to be getting to it. After lots of head scratching, swearing, etc, my only theory is that I was too rough in reconnecting the wiring and damaged a plug, creating a loose connection. Well what a bummer.

I shall investigate further in full daylight sometime.

Posted

Did you reconnect the battery? Not that I've ever been caught out by this of course. Ahem.

Yes, thanks  :-D

Getting a red ignition light on the dash board - just no, er, ignition...

This is why I run a £350 ZX (that and I like it...)

If I bin it or something else happens that doesn't involve another car I'll get it picked up by the scrappie and get another car. My excess is £350, and that's the cheapest it goes!

The bulbs were these (also bought a couple from Aldi, 10W that are brighter than 60W incandescent)

This is the one I fitted on the staircase.

Tons of them on eBay.

I picked up my spare brake calipers for my mexi bug the other day, and this afternoon had a wrestle with the lambda sensor in its exhaust.

I won! Took some persuading though!

Hopefully the new one will arrive this week and then I will pop the calipers on, bleed the brakes and fingers crossed, get a test on the damn thing

A combination of spanners, to no avail, then I just destroyed it with some stilsons so I could get at the hex with a proper socket and got my big bar on it

Went to the Austin Counties rally at Tenterden today in the Somerset. A really good turnout of all kinds of cars, mostly Austin Counties but a few others including an immaculate FE Victor with 21k from new, owned by the same guy from six months old, an amazingly clean MK2 Cav saloon and a Bedford Bambi covered in ridiculous tat. Also, quite a lot of older stuff in rough condition, including a hand painted Somerset with filler in the sills and moss growing around the windows, and a horrible A60 Sun-Tor that was full of filler and had a silly non-standard front bumper on it.

Of course the Somerset developed a new fault on the way there. This time the battery wasn't charging. Mentioned it to a few people there and before long there were half a dozen Austin Counties Car Club members under the bonnet with a multimeter. In the end, the consensus was that the dynamo control box was faulty, one of the contacts had actually worn out/broken off in the past and someone had bodged it with a blob of solder, which had now gone as well. Fortunately the club secondhand spares man only lives in Whitstable, and he's got a selection of control boxes for me to try, FOC, which was very nice of him. I made it the 25 miles back ok, without using lights and just using the wipers intermittently to conserve power. I think I'll rob the battery out of the Maestro and put it in the Somerset's boot, in case I don't have enough charge to make it to Whitstable next week.

I also spoke to a chap there who recognised the registration number. He remembered passing it regularly, way back in 1984 when it used to be parked on a street on the outskirts of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, when he lived down that way. He said it looks exactly the same now!

If the MOT runs out mid-November, you only need to wait a few more days before getting a 13-month MOT. Looks bloody smart. Great to see how this thing has got better and better during multiple Shiter ownership.

Just wait til I get my hands on it. Your 416 has had a lucky escape 'Wobs.

You must of done something wrong SS -  As getting old parts off an old car is supposed to be a complete PITA that should take much longer than anticipated, with the new part not quite fitting properly.

Next car purchase plan is up in the air after a deal fell through. So, I'd like to find either a Citroen XM or Rover 600 for sale pretty much now! Hoping to deliver the Rover to its new home on Wednesday. The game is afoot!

Is that very cheap (sub £300 I think it was) red 600 in the tat thread still available?
