It was a bit odd going from the smooth tickover hum of the Jaguar, to the OMG ALL MY SAUCEPANS FELL DOWN THE STAIRS of the XUD diesel on tickover.

It's a combination of the Father Ted cows episiode and Lilliputian Syndrome.

Chevroletwoo Spark is it not? One of my few exposures to an actually modern car. Well... it wasn't actually good enough to be a car, more like one of those trolleys from B&Q that only have two wheels that steer, neither of them in the direction you want.

It's quite alarming that someone appears to have spent their own money on buying one rather than being lumbered with it from Eurorentawreck.

Drat. Wondered if the slider pins (even though new) were causing the Sirion's caliper problem. Nope! Undid the caliper, removed the pads, pushed the pedal and the piston is now very stuck indeed. To the point that I can't refit the caliper. Caliper now removed and it still won't budge, which eliminates the pipework from my enquiries.

Can't find a new caliper for less than £87 (albeit with a £20 surcharge included in that) and repair kits with pistons seem to be non-existent. Tax is up at the end of the month too. Money is not plentiful. Bother.

Oh and naturally, I was working on the Sirion outside the garage, so I can't remove the 2CV now. PLAN AHEAD!

Am now considering trying to get the piston out anyway, and seeing if I can get away with a light emery session.

Got the piston out. Doesn't seem too bad so quick-clean-and-hope it is then!

All reassembled. Seems much better on initial trial. Road test still to come. Took a lot of effort to try and clean up the outer edge of the bore as well as the piston - which only required very light emery treatment.

I have taken the NSF brakes apart to change the discs and pads on the Xsara, only to find the coil spring has snapped at the bottom. Fucksticks.

It looks like it hasn't been apart before so i am torn between giving to a garage to change and me having a go. Of course googling it just brings up all the horror stories of what has gone wrong:D

To top it all my impact wrench has died so i need to return it, so i am without that.

Well I moved house and now I live with a woman in Bolsover. I went to Aldi in Clowne and saw this, and thought of you.

This lad is clearly still reaping the benefits of when BL decided to make car doors a universal fitment for approx 30 years. Only one door on the other side was red, sadly.

A BIG thanks to Cort16 of this parish for helping me out today, top man.

It must be the season for brake repairs as NU_VOLVO was in at my favourite garage for a set of new rear pads and discs as I completely failed to get the rear wheels off to do it myself.

Plus I couldn't really be arsed.
Anyway, it's like driving about in a new car or something now so money well spent. Other than that, it's being driven around and the silly turbo noise still makes me grin.

Drove an MX5 today as one came into my mates yard for scrap. Failed ob a bit of welding for inner sills. Easy job, i offered 400 for it and went for a blaz up the road with roof down. After some arguing over no mot and my insurance cover. Oh and a trophy blue MG ZR with HGF, i have so much fun in mine I'll take that if its cheap enough. Pics will follow tomoz as cant upload on phone

Progress on the Rover SD1 front. I went to pick up the NOS doors and front wings from the previous owner, who had been kindly storing them for me after I bought them as part of a package deal with the car back in December, then dropped them off in Cardiff where they'll be painted over the summer ready for bolting on to the car at some point.

This meant I got to see the Rover in person for the first time since Christmas, and have a look at the tailgate repairs, which look first class. The window is still out but the new metal is completely seamless and it's been painted to a rather higher standard than Solihull managed, if the tales are half-way correct. The old screen rubber is apparently re-useable, which is just as well as they're extinct for series 1s. Should be picking it up next weekend, just in time for Shitefest. (Unless I'm in Lincolnshire next Saturday collecting a Renault 16.)

It also meant a good catch up with the Rover's previous owner, who you may remember is an excellent fellow (see http://autoshite.com/topic/15402-sd1-series-1-resto-update-p4/?p=496215 for more on this). He's currently fettling a mechanically sound and solid Rover P6 that he calls tatty and I call nicely patinated (well, brush painted), and also had a very tidy Saab 9000CS and a late BMW E30 4-door that looks immaculate apart from a big hole in the floor (now repaired).

The Saab is for sale. I resisted, but it would be a good buy for someone and I promised to spread the word, so I'll do a for sale thread for it later.

Going to sell the Cosworth. Had it 8 years and haven't used it for the last 4.

It needs a bloody good clean, service and mot then I might give it to the boys with the big white room and enormous prices to do their stuff.

Can you imagine who or what that would attract on ebay?!

Been to look at a Corolla T-Sport with Old Man. The one we were looking at had a couple things that put us off (4 different tyres!), but we're both sold on them and definitely want one now.

18 is beginning to annoy me.

Constant air leaks spring up after sorting different ones from around the carb/inlet manifold.

Diff bearings are suspected gone as there's a rumbling noise.

This diesel engine might have to happen - I know where I can get a diesel engine and gearbox but fat chance of finding another petrol box.

Been doing some more work on the Rover of Doom today.  I bought it a new (secondhand) battery from the local scrappy for 20 quid, and it starts a lot better now.  The brand new but teeny battery that was on there before is now on the Innocenti - although I might have to temporarily nick it for the Carina, which is suffering from a very weak battery at the moment.

I've refitted the headlights with washers behind the lower mounting bolts in an attempt to raise the headlamp aim beyond "hedgehog hunter" level.  Once it gets dark I'll take the car for a drive and see if it's helped.  I also had a poke around underneath - it's still bloody solid under there, and I didn't see any rotten brake pipes, but the nearside outer CV boot has split so that's going to need doing.  I might cheat and buy a split jobbie just for the MOT as they're a bit of a faff to do properly.  I've taken the day off work next Friday and booked it in for a test, so we'll see how it goes.  If all goes well the Spacy will be going in the same day too.  Only thing I can see to do on that is to swap the indicator flasher unit over with one that flashes even when all the other lights are on.  That and the front brake isn't brilliant, but there's not a huge amount I can do about that.  It's a piddly little drum so never going to be the best in the world anyway.

Dad's replacing his Omega with a 1997 Lexus LS400 in white with a black interior that apparently has dented doors on one side.  Amusing, he's come full circle with his car hunt and gone back to something that he really, really liked the first time around.

Speaking of Dad's Omega, I had the fright of my life when I went for the brakes in it today and discovered I've got a little bit too used to the brakes in the Xantia.  There was that horrible moment coming up to a junction that I thought the brakes had failed, the difference was that startling, so I'd say the Xantia's brakes are pretty good at least for the time being.

I had a similar "moment" in the Rover earlier, having taken it out for the first time in weeks after having been driving everyhwere in the Scénic with its stupidly over-servoed French brakes.  It's amazing how a car (the Rover) that I've done so many thousands of miles in can seem completely alien to drive after getting used to something else for a while.

Managed to get some obsolete bits for my SD1 - cost? Zilch.

Electric sunroof switch, indicator switch/stalk, handle for sunroof motor and a few other bits.

I live near a guy who used to break them ( he broke A LOT of them ), however they are so rare now he has'nt broke one for years.

As they are so extinct I am at a loss as to why they hav'nt got the OMGSCENETAX of fords - let's face it, they were the jam butty of choice for the plod from late 70's to early 90's and royalty used them - good vid on YouTube of the late princess of Wales being a passenger in one while the driver demonstrates a J - turn.

As I have said before, the SD1 is for winners.

41.66mph average if you actually drove for 24 hours?

There were a fair few stops on the way. Left CZ 3.15 am Saturday, arrived here 9am this morning.

Had to do some tweaks. Mechanic had replaced lots of cooling and vacuum pipes. Unfortunately he didn't replace the non return valve in the pcv to inlet pipe - this causes a shite idle. So he'd blocked the PCV vent without mentioning it - so it blew a couple of litres of oil out in the first 500km and popped a couple of gaskets. I was beyond furious when I found what he'd done as it's a stupid beginners mistake to just seal a PCV system and not expect anything else to happen. Fixed that and it didn't use a drop afterwards, but there are a couple of leaks that'll need sorting now. For the sake of a phone call I'll end up pulling the motor and replacing seals. Easy enough. Afternoons work.

My route went through Holland so we stopped to get a replacement radiator cap. Mechanic had replaced the seal with some silicon shit that didn't work properly - despite being told to buy a new one. Luckily I'd bodged up a catch tank system which helped a lot.

Then I ended up talking to loads of people on the way. Some for hours.

Apparent issues discovered? Other than the nice fresh oil leaks and the mega short ratio did I didn't know about -4000+ rpm @ 70 mph it held up well. Wasn't even hideous on fuel. Timing chain is a bit rattly now but easy fix.
