Don't be too quick to dismiss that Trigger, I reckon the white will look properly nice when the whole flank is done where the silver will just sort of melt into the acres of luscious blue paint.

I'm not sure, I've got a roll of black in the garage so I've just had a play with that, I think it looks much nicer although I don't know if I should have the thin line at the top or bottom?!

Been down to the viewing for the Cheffins vintage sale at Sutton (Cambs) today. Some proper grotty chod wheeled out including a Rolls Corniche laid up since the 80s and a fab old smoker Daimler V8250. Once Flickr does it's thing I'll put plenty of pics up.

That Rolls looks a bargain if all it makes is 3k. Why do these things always come up when I am skint.

Car advertising fail! Sorry to hear the car wasnt as expected. I was starting to think phil_lihp towers was fast becoming a mid 90s Rover dealership!

At least it wasnt the other end of the country or anything.

Exactly - if it had been, or it had been in better condition, then I'd have persevered but it really wasn't worth the hassle.  Cosmetically it was pretty knackered and the low, oily coolant and dirty, overfilled oil suggested it was mechanically pretty much past it too, sometimes a car just gives off a bad vibe and this one just wasn't right.  I would still fancy an MGF at some point.

Black and thin strip down looks rather good I'll admit Trig. You can't really tell until you see the whole thing, though.

Can I be a cussed bastard and say I think they look better without any pinstripes. :P

Posted

I once spent a whole day removing pinstripes and that was a buggar of a job too. Heat with a hairdryer, peel off 1mm, repeat all day.

You can get a special rubber wheel for taking them off. It works magic.

That's exactly what's happened.  Ã‚£10 to replace but I suspect we'll run out of expletives during the replacement process and have to invent a few more due to the unique way Citroen design their cars.

If it's been done before, you'll be able to unbolt the pedal easily enough, if not, take the nut off of the bolt and cut the head off, and push it out the other way.

I haven't had to do one for ages, but I remember calling them all the cunts under the sun during the replacement process.

Happily, (even though I offered my assistance, it was not required) the nubbin has been replaced - genuine Citroen, only £6.50 or so! - and the clutch while high is okay and should serve for a few more thousand miles.  Cost-postponement acheivinated!

Hairnets hornet. Wasn't it those and the firestorm that could run out between some service stations on the motorways ?

The days of Hondas with tiny tanks and shit fuel consumption.

Used to have an Austin Champ, used to get 5 to 7 mpg on normal use.

Low range about 2 gallons per mile.

I had a mate with a Thornycroft Mighty Antar that he used very occasionally in his recovery firm as his back up.

It still was petrol and he worked out when towing it would do............

I've just purchased a Draper socket set online. Getting a bit more enthused about car DIY now, thanks to autoshite. Only just basic stuff mind with 1 or 2 'spanner ratings'. I'm thinking of removing the towbar if I can and refit the loose sump guard.

Also, I want to get my car booked in somewhere to get the whistling turbo addressed. It's a common problem with the YD22 engine. I've put up with that for 3 years now and I'm getting fed up of peds turning round and looking at me* when I give it a few beans. I thought the point of driving a Nissan is to be a bit incognito.

*either that or they can hear my awful music.

^^^ what the heck is that green thing? A Mazda?

Had a shuffle about with the cars, the 504 hadn't been touched for a while but started easily and not too smokily. Lined them up for a quick fleet shot....

I CAN HAZ STORAGE!

Arranged to rent a shed, with electrickery and space for 4-5 shitty old cars plus a working and tool storage area, a few minutes' drive from home.  Very excited.

Bad news is the chap wants to rebuild it first, so it won't be available until next year.

Great news re the storage. How did you find out about it? Counting up the cars in your signature that means everything bar the daily would fit?

Posted

Just luck really - heard about it from a chap we know from walking our respective dogs in the same park.  He's built himself an absolutely stunning replica GT40 with a 5 litre Windsor V8, and we talk cars when we bump into each other.  He knows I'm looking for somewhere dry to keep the SD1 that's currently in Cardiff, 40 miles away, and has very kindly brokered the introduction.

I've been looking for ages in all the usual places for lockups and with commercial property agents and got nowhere.  I think you just have to know people, especially in what you might call 'a close knit community' like round here.

Mathematically yes, most of the fleet would fit.  Trouble is, the fleet is very likely to grow by two in the next couple of weeks - a Renault 16 and a Lancia HPE.  I have a (full of stuff) garage, some driveway and street parking space, plus maybe Cardiff, plus the HPE might stay with Breadvan or Pillock for a while if their offers are still open.  The Rover 75 is earmarked for Lord Sterling when he's back from France later in the year, or will be otherwise moved on.  It'll be messy for a bit, but at least I can see a way forward that means I don't have to sell the Jag and the Dedra.

There might even be another shed available at some point - more tat!  A CX and a Royale Coupe and maybe an early Sierra Ghia... Ro80... [dreams on]

Arrived safely in that there London. An automatic makes driving through the city almost bearable! It's a good job there's always plenty to look at when you're sitting in a car, not moving though. London is a bit of a head-messer when you're a country bumpkin. Worrying how easily I slotted back into city-driving mode, though I did make myself look like a tourist by letting several buses pull out.

Sadly, despite being very nice, the Jag isn't very comfortable. Having done the same journey in a W124 Merc, the W124 Merc wins. I still like the Jag more though, because it's a Jaaag.

Having hammered several smaller sockets over the locking wheel nuts on the Audi, I am now totally bereft of usable 18mm and 11/16th sockets as they all have nuts rammed in them so hard, its like a euphemism for something or other.

More Cortina capers for myself, yesterday I got back the front seats from the trimmers, the last time i saw them they looked like this.

They are looking a little better now.

Mine you for £160 they want too, although I don't that's too bad seeing that they needed welding.

Last night i sprayed them up with the vinyl paint then spent this morning fitting them, Annoying all the seat runners that i'd bought didn't fit so i ended up using the old seat runners in the end, I think they look alright though, even if the colour is slightly greyer than it should be.

This is the car they looked with the wrong "L" spec seats.

I still haven't done the stripes, I can't decided if it needs them or not?.

+1   It looks superb as it is, I don't think stripes are required personally.

Posted

I'm edging away towards no stripes but like Deejay says I'll give one side a try and see how it looks.

Posted

^ That's a good idea.

It looks stunning as it is, but stripes might be correct for the model and year?  I'd be trying silver if you've got them.

New ARB link on the 18

Old one just wobbled about.

Starting to think diff bearings in gearbox are knackered, theres a grinding/rumbling noise coming from the box when the driveshafts are turned, and theres also a funny noise whilst driving coming from that sort of area.

Arrgh my eyes, i know i've got OCD but i'd have to wire brush and black paint the 18's calipers, disc non friction areas and the suspension/subframe, just hate seeing rust.
