Been going round changing all the clocks on the fleet.  The one in the Merc hadn't changed, which struck me as slightly odd as when the clocks went back in October it updated automatically.  On closer investigation the clock in the stereo had updated but the clock in the dash hadn't.  I couldn't immediately find how to set the dash clock so I went on YouTube to find a how to video, but when I attempted to follow the instructions it turned out my car doesn't actually have a "time and date" option in the settings menu.

Turns out the clock is supposed to update automatically, like the one in the stereo had done, but it relies on the signal from the stereo to do so.  Now that I've fitted an aftermarket Android radio which isn't sending the correct signal to the BCU, that's no longer happening.  So there's no way to change the clock and I'm stuck with it reading the wrong time unless I refit the original stereo.  Bloody moderns...

Not much help but l swapped my S211 Comand system recently to an Android unit and managed to change the clock to manual with Xentry.

I've got a bit of brake judder on my 330i after only changing the discs about 4k miles ago. Having a look at the manufacturer docs, they reckon it's rare to have warped discs develop normally and usually down to hub distortion.

Looking at those hubs it makes me wonder if I didn't clean my hubs up well enough.

It is very rare for discs to warp, its usually thermal transfer. Patches of pad material imbed into the disc, usually a few spirited sharp brakes from 70-30 will clean them up nicely and remove the judder.

Interesting article here about it.

My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherry had RDS update for the clock.  When I took it to France it changed to French time - I was highly impressed.  When I got back to dear old blighty it didn't change back and never updated automatically again - progress.

Fleet update.  The 406 achieved a new MoT a few weeks back with some minor advisories.  I then did a road trip to the Netherlands totalling 740 miles without incident.  I stayed near a city called Leiden, a 20 minute drive from The Hague. @aldo135 gave me the idea to go there (and Wassenaar) after reading his thread, and I wasn't disappointed in terms of chod spotting opportunities.

There's plenty more so I'll update my spotting thread at some point.

The Forester keeps trundling along, although I've got a list of jobs I'd like to sort out but I never seem to find the time, nor the arsedness.  The intermittent heavy steering has become a PITA so the one thing I have done is buy a new PAS pump and associated hoses and fluid reservoir (the old one has a knackered integral filter) .  I'll have a go at doing that next week.

The 20mpg around town is becoming annoying though, so might get a Panda or something to run as a daily.

Very good article - puts the 'science' behind what a service manager told me years ago, " ... the tendancy is for folks to run down the motorway , up the slip road and hold the car on the brakes while waiting to move off again ... " - localised cooling  where the pads 'pinch' the disc ...

I have heard this is a thing. As my 330i is an automatic, I'm on the brakes a lot more than a manual where I tend to let the car slow itself down first in an appropriate gear.

Having a massive sense of Deja vu today.

The last time I jumped on a train and travelled a ridiculous distance for a car was 2017. Quite where those 8 years have gone and what I’ve done in those 8 years I will never know, but I’m about to embark on a minimum 12 hour round trip from Newark in the East Midlands to Ayrshire and back.

To add insult to injury, I had a hectic year at work in 2024 with minimal time off, at the end of January I agreed an extended break so I’ve enjoyed February and March focusing on my boys whilst on full pay.

My first day back is tomorrow. Talk about last minute John. What could possibly go wrong 👀🤦🏻‍♂️

Have a look at the steering shaft universal joint as these can start seizing up as they age. Our 97 Legacy used to suffer until it got drowned in grease.

The ex @calebaaront Jaaag failed the MOT on the handbrake. Needs a new rear right side caliper, I have given the go ahead to get it done. Also they found a split in the turbo vacuum pipe so will replace that. Hopefully that will restore boost properly.  Looks like the Jazz will be put up on here soon.

Thanks I'll give that a go.  An easy fix would be welcome so I can tick it off the list.

You should, it's where Huggy lived for six years.  You've seen it enough times.

And no, I haven't suddenly been out and bought a Jazz.  Nor have I suddenly been given one.  But somehow, mysteriously, this has appeared outside my back gate.  It appears to have tax and test (I looked it up) and it's locked.  How peculiar.

There are a lot of problems and things that need fixing here at the moment. The first one was today helping Dad fix the front marker lights on his 39 year old Swedish built Cabby caravan. These lights were crushed by ice this winter and were a mess of unmarked wires on one side where they connected to the other light.

So to power this while I tried to figure out what 4 wires were I came up with this below and it worked great. Connected to trailer plug and only provided power where I needed it and ground.

And new lights on.

The next problem is a big one, a tractor has a broken starter solenoid and the right part doesn't exist any longer, nor does a new starter, so the hope is that one solenoid from another model will fit or that I can adapt it to fit.

What make and model of tractor is it?

With the level of knowledge on here someone may be able to say "Use part xyz from a Horsely Horseless Mark 2"

Small win here. FATHA_Sterling's B7 Passat has a plastic warning triangle mount up inside the boot door, but it's always had a broken tab and never stays in place. I've tried it with sticky double-sided tape but that didn't work.

These things are £30+ for a piece of moulded plastic. Nah mayte, you can keep that.

This time, I decided to try a cable tie. I threaded the cable tie through the holes in the boot mount which it's mounted to and back through the mount itself, pulled tightly closed and cut off the excess tie. Job jobbed:

Next thing to do is source some B7 Passat alloys if anyone has a set they're willing to sell?

It is a Zetor 2511. The 2011 and 2511 have a 2 cylinder engine and use a smaller starter than the larger Zetors. And this is no longer available, a new starter with a adapterplate is sold for these 2 cylinders but it is larger and requires cutting an oil line from the oil filter, which we do not want to do.

And the starter solenoid is a bit special as it is hooked onto a lever and pulls the starter into the flywheel. It's possible that Skoda used something similar, but I don't know.

But if I can't get this to work, I'll ask for help here as there are many knowledgeable people who probably have a solution.
