Wow, all the aspirational items for a well-heeled Japanese tech geek circa 1993 there…apart from perhaps the passenger footwell carpet!

Lounge edition?

I wondered if you'd like to see a miracle.Screenshot_2024-11-06-22-26-01-503_ie.donedeal.android.thumb.jpg.11c63f85c451ddf49d87511562b89b93.jpg

This Fiat 500L is for sale in Dublin with 360k Kms up, that's 223k miles. What's miraculous is that it's a 0.9 Twin Air.

Wonder how many engines it has had?

Spotted.  Actual self driving car.

Is that a vacuum-cleaner motor on the roof-rack?

Job for today, fix the brake lights and indicators. First puzzle, how to open the "trunk". 🙃

Almost 285,000 miles. Alison has had her third Timing Belt change in ten years of ownership.

Also done is the number plate lamps. Their screws were fucked.

And for a planned move abroad, a second Foglamp. 🧐

I've owned this D4D Avensis since 2017 and it has been a cracking bit of machinery. Not fast or fun to drive but totally dependable and carries a lot of junk with ease.

IMG20241107112858.thumb.jpg.485213b854b607bce01dcc4408455250.jpg

Since I bought a CRV last month it has sat about uninsured and sadly needs to find a new home so yesterday I gave it wash and checked the lights and tyres and bunged it in for a MOT.

Can't complain about another pass. It got advisories this year for corrosion at the rear (this isn't nothing that couldn't be ground back and treated/coated with wax) and a slightly knocky anti roll bar link.

Splashed out £16 on a new Delphi link and the old one came off without a fight as I had removed it when I first got the car when I was chasing a clonk and had copper greased the threads when I refitted it. The clonk was a brake pad moving in the caliper which I cured with a couple of dabs of silicone between the pad back plate and the carrier.

I've never kept a daily car this long and it's going to a sad day when it moves on.

£79,000 for an engine rebuild?????? WTF!!! I'd be terrified to drive it!

It's not a car, it's "an investment" in the eyes of 99.99999999% of the people who are likely to be looking at buying it.  Or indeed those likely to have owned it and spent that on an engine rebuild.

Odds on it having actually driven less than 50 miles since that rebuild I'd say are high.

I've got a mate works for a well respected Bentley specialist, they are so popular that they offer a 'flat rate' resto/refurb at only just shy of half a million.

The 'real' classic cars are a rich mans game which they dont want you 'oiks' to be able to play

Regardless of whose paying it creates a lot of jobs and keeps skills alive in the uk even if it is further down the food chain, long may it continue 👍

+1 for Avensis staying power.

Recently I tried pressing the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and was pleasantly surprised by the way it responded.

Have you tried pressing the pedal all the way down?

BTW if yours is a 2.0 D4d I may have a wheel and good tyre to sell you due to a fuck up on my part.

Absolutely agree, the skills and workmanship I’ve seen and heard about is absolutely brilliant and it’s great it’s being thought to young guys coming in as well

Yes they do have a lazy long pedal that makes for sedate progress although I checked it's history the other day and got this result back.

So I'm obviously not pedaling fast enough...

Well done on the pass! I've always loved the look of these since a neighbour who worked for Toyota had a string of brand new ones when they very first came out.

I had a new one in 2003, 2.0D4D T3S estate. Bland but solid and I put 150k on it in 3 years before it was chopped in for an Octavia estate. It never went wrong but the early built in sat nav was shit🙂

So I bought nice Monroe shocks and a good quality Motaquip mounting plate.  Fitted it all on Thursday and now the other plate has failed.

Always replace things in pairs boys and girls 😫

The saga may be at an end, finished the job at work early today and returned to the yard to find the new rear shock mount had arrived so grabbed the ramp to fit it.  Not 100% simple as only one side of the old mount had snapped off, on the other it was the mounting bolt.  Fortunately the boss has nice sharp drill bits, the 4mm went straight in then the 4.5 mm wound the remains of the bolt through the captive mounting which meant I didn't need to use the easy out we'd spent 15 minutes looking for.   New bolts were found at the agricultural dealer next door to the motor factors.  A new rear brake adjuster was fitted while the wheel was off but came in a pack of two.  Suppose I'd best fit the other one next!

Ha, I'd have a go of that!😂

It was mainly text and a series of arrows but more often than not just said, cannot read disk, or something similar🙂 When it did work, it was accurate and got me to a remote farmhouse in Wales first time.

The sat nav in my Rover 75 (also 2003) works well enough, but it also seems to struggle to read the disc when it's cold and damp.

Stuck in traffic on the way home from work, I got all excited when I spotted this beauty up ahead.

20241107_180625.thumb.jpg.379d487da186b64e4e5920c9215ad39a.jpg

My excitement dwindled somewhat when I got closer and spotted that it was right hand drive - they never did a RHD 205 Rallye.  Sure enough I checked the reg when I got home and it's an Open dressed up to look like a Rallye.  Still nice to see though, and it was a youngish lad driving it.

I knew I’d spelled disc wrong as soon as I hit submit. Next I’ll be posting about break disks ffs😁

Thanks mate, I know, just couldn’t be arsed to hide my obvious failings this time. There will be many more, I’m sure🙂

Disk is the correct spelling when you're referring to a computer hard (or floppy) disk.  A CD or DVD is a disc though, as is a break brake.

We did get a RHD 'Rallye UK' - but they were in yellow, white and blue. It was, in effect, a stickered up, UK-market 1.4-litre XS.

I think it was a consolation prize for us not being able to have the real deal 1.3, which was a Group N homologation special (I don't think the twin carb manifold worked with RHD).
