XJ6 back after too long. On  the upside it's as smooth as silk engine wise and the electrics and stereo all work so it's an functional car  now.

Progress on the Mobylette.

Nearside indicators not working yet but I think that's probably because the rear bulb has gone - unfortunately the screws holding the lens on are rusted to buggery so will need drilling out.  The flasher unit is fine though which was a relief, and the cheapo Indian indicator switch I bought works as I'd hoped it would.

Soz, not soz.

May be an image of car and road

Have to say it wears its mileage (178k) exceptionally well, and the chain has been done recently. The lack of rear leg room is an issue though, to the point where it might have to go to be replaced with a 5 series or something.

Perhaps they thought people might treat them better than a big standard white van.

There could be something in that - I had a conversation with a fella years ago who ran a fleet of Transits as part of his commercial signage business.

He always optioned alloys on his new vans, as he reckoned the lads treated them so much better than if they were running standard steels. He said the wheels paid for themselves almost immediately, by not having to deal with scuffs and minor prangs.

There's a builder's firm local to me, they have a fleet of these new shape transits and transporters, posh ones, and a couple of supercars, and a couple of recent (<5 years) range rover sports, all with private plates, a nice modern office, aforementioned supercars often parked illegally. Whenever someone asks for a job to be done - total radio silence and they never hear back from them. Not a one off, heard it happen multiple times. Dont know what their game is, does make me wonder though.

To answer your question, C) - if you can even get any work done!

Be interesting to see what their accounts look like....

Gave the old W211 a wash and wax today, it still looks good considering it's 19 years old this year.

Also I recently brought it into the 21st century with a new stereo with wireless android auto and carplay,

Finally got the reversing camera wired up, what a pain that was.

20220924_114448.thumb.jpg.5560647a901d1d38d15430550b49bae9.jpg

It's proving quite reliable so far although I have got an SBC warning

which means I'll have to send the pump off to be refurbished, my local specialist quoted me £1900! I can have it rebuilt for £450 so it's not the end of the world.

Overall average is 40mpg and that's 90% town only, can't complain for a nigh on 2 ton big old bus.

Although being a pre DPF diesel it stinks until its warm, which I'm not a fan of.

Stepdaughter and her (new) BF are coming round this afternoon for a bit of work on the Mini. Hopefully those replacement struts will just slot in nicely. Might be a little firmer as they’re off a Cooper D and not a One D. Gonna give it a general look over as well to see if anything else is needed for the MoT in November

Any more info on the Radio?

my Merc command unit is playing up so I’ll be looking to replace pretty soon

I had planned on fixing the Volvo's handbrake on Thursday or Friday after work and getting the retest done today, but it was torrential rain after work both days and I don't have enough space to work on it inside the unit at the moment. The weather seems ok today, so hopefully I can get it sorted before it changes its mind.

According to an American on YouTube (not RobertDIY) the handbrake on an 850 should be fully engaged by 3 clicks. I refuse to believe that's true as all 3 I've owned have taken most of the travel to do anything at all.

Yeah it's one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234566289973?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=UYYCUz9vRVi&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=CVQtOrP6SSG&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

It is a challenge to fit as you have to remove the control panel from the hidden drawer which is fiddly, but a bit of patience is worth it, pretty much plug and play, comparable double din AA+CP units from pioneer and the like are £400, and don't look as good or offer wireless functionality.

The Audi left with a new owner today, a bit sad, but I need the money and the space. Hope he takes good care of it.

I moved these when they were new.  I’m sorry but the handbrakes were mediocre when they were brand new!

Get in a 3 or 4 year old and you’d be using the full length of the pedal (V70, S80, XC90) and leaving it in gear!

One side has had its spring and damper swapped.

F886DF46-E1E5-43B8-8BC8-B7FDC364EBE6.jpeg

Went pretty well and it wasn’t too difficult to slot into the hub carrier once we had the top mount bolted up. A small amount of lube on the bottom of the damper and a jack under the bottom ball joint and everything slid together nicely. Even the droplinks came off with no hex heads turning into cheese.

Other side was a different story.

Penetrating fluid AND a dab of heat and the pinch bolt still sheared off. Myself and madam’s BF are heading to silverlake shortly to see if we can get a hub carrier from a scrap car, so as a preventative measure all bolts and nuts have had some plusgas dribbled on them, hopefully we’ll finish this by sunset.

I think also as a preventative measure I’ll be getting brake flexies as well. They’re starting to look a little bit meh. Again the rubber to metal joins will get a good dose of plusgas.

TL:DR - mini is half done.

BTW I think stepdaughter’s boyfriend would fit in on here. He drives this

I quite like them, but your replacement vehicle is much superior.

I agree with that. But going to miss the Audi a bit nonetheless.

12 years and 80k miles on this cambelt. Renault Grand Scenic 1.5 dci.
The fuel filter was dated 2016 and i changed the pollen filter as well and it could have been the original as the lower dash panels then the clutch pedal assembly have to be removed to get it out.bb1b049ad82eb9e903b60b97555ac5d8.jpg

One more can of primer gets me down to two spots. Sanded smooth, I'm now waiting for the stuff I put on them to dry up so I can sand one final time and lay some paint on the thing.

Looks very nice from here. Get yourself one of those pumper spray things from B&Q or Wilko for £15 or so. Technically not a hosepipe and it only uses about 5 litres of water.

The MX-5 and the Type R got oil and filter changes today. Both are pleasingly clean and tidy underneath for cars known to rot. The only issue on the MX5 is that the chassis rails are scraped to fuck as it's so low. I'm going to raise the coilovers a bit at some point.

Type R was a mild pain, the sump plug is under a skidplate and the filter is a wheel off job. MX5 could only have been easier if it didn't have an undertray. Filter is accessible by hand and came right off. It's had a competent owner in the past.

Pleasingly, the tappets on both cars have quietened down and they're both running smoother. Happy days.

MX5 needs to go for an MOT when I have time, and after that the Type R.

The Type R needs new tyres and front dampers as they're shot.

I treated myself to another car brochure, for a car I've a soft spot for!

 20220924_131912.thumb.jpg.24dd4e7fd397ce93553858783cb123a4.jpg

A Europe spec, English brochure for the Cadillac XLR! A car they sold officially here in the UK and sold all of about 2 examples (according to How Many left).

It's a lotto win car for myself. :)

I packed up working on the Mini about 6pm. We got a replacement hub carrier from Silverlake, but caught in terrible traffic on the way back because axidumped on the A27.

I found the least seized and manky looking one of the good stock of R50s they had, but the bearing is shot, so I’ve ordered another along with brake flexis. Mounted it to the replacement strut as it’s easier assembling it off the car. Bottom ball joint feels good and the boot isn’t perished so it will do. The disc is rust welded to the bearing hub so it’s soaking overnight in plusgas. I hope I don’t need to press the bearing out as that is something I don’t have.

Ugga-dugga gun made this job a lot easier than fannying around with breaker bars. Hoping tomorrow I can get these swapped over. I don’t want to use the second hand bearing but if I can swap the good one so madam can use the car for a couple of days while I wait for the new one to be delivered.

I actually need to do work on the SAAB as the MoT is up in 2 weeks, but SWMBO jr wanted this done this weekend 🤨

I managed to find some red primer so I spritzed that on the bare metal patches. I've now sanded the whole panel for the final time and made everything level and smooth for paint. Hopefully I can get some colour on it tomorrow.
