Recently surfaced, yours truly with local Kent rallycross legend Will Gollop's Metro 6R4 at Lydden Hill circa 1990.

@egg Do you know if Will still lives at Blean?  He used to frequent the 3 Horseshoes at Hernhill and would tell some good rallycross tales!

Wish I'd taken a picture of the patch I made as it looked really neat all joggled

I don't know, but there's an interesting article here from 2106 that talks about the car a bit more, says he lived in Blean then.

I expect there are rules against that sort of thing. Perhaps accidentally* post the  neighbours’ post in their box and have to ring the bell to collect. Has happened to me twice recently.

Swift Update.

Today I had a packet for them so I didn't need to resort to any of the dubious practices above but it did pretty much start the way @brownnova suggested. I handed the packet over and before he could shut the door I said "that's an interesting collection you've got there".

Seems like a nice young man, I'm guessing mid 20s but I'm quite hopeless at guessing people's ages, and happy to talk about them and didn't treat me with suspicion as I'm sure many would. He works nights down the docks which is why I never see him working on them, hope I didn't wake him up.

Apparently the two next to each other above have been sold to someone in Birmingham but the one to the right is staying. They've all been welded in the usual places underneath. The two being sold both both came from the IOW and the HW regs confirm this. The third one came from Poole, so all localish.

They are not quite identical. One has alloy wheels and colour coded mirrors, one has steels and colour coded mirrors and one has steels and black plastic mirrors despite all being badged as GLS.

He seemed keen on them and genuinely liked them, they're not just old cars. He has an old Fiesta for everyday use, the Swift is for fun which is good to know.

Then he says his uncle has one and he only lives in the next road so I've probably seen it. I hadn't because despite being an adjacent road, I don't deliver there so I took a little detour on my way back to the office. And found this little thing.

It's been a bit pimped but it's a proper old one in a great colour. It has visible rust on the bonnet so lord knows what's underneath but it's still going.

I’m glad no dubious means were needed Yoss!

In Brownnova fleet news…

The Elgrand is still at the garage, turns out the belt snapping was the result of a tight alternator. So replacement one procured and a wheel bearing, then hopefully an MoT and the (remarkably patient) new owner can hopefully finally get their car. The garage has had staff shortages and then staff off with the ‘Rona on top… but this really has taken some time!

In true Brownnova style I’ve already got my eye on something else less practical and more risky. Possible arrival this weekend if I play my cards right, it’s very local (again… all my purchases in the last 12 months have been within 10 miles of my house except the Pontiac!)

But that does mean that (sensible head on) one of the others should go, and likely it should come from the 90s exec stable as I have three of those. The 940 is staying, that thing is awesome. So it’s between the slightly broken but very long standing 9000 (the heart choice) and the low mileage and really very capable W210 (the head choice). It’s likely heart will win and the E240 will be up for sale very soon.

So against my better judgement, I've decided that the absolute shed of a BX I picked up for parts should actually be given another chance at life. Mainly because it's been so badly treated that there isn't anything on it worth taking for parts, so might as well see if it can scrape through a ticket with a bit of tinkering.

I've started the ball rolling today by ordering a mid section and back box for the exhaust, as these are both missing which means that it currently sounds incredible* when running.

The real pain comes when I have to pay for a windscreen and potentially a gearbox if the one on it transpires to be fubar, but that's all fun and games for the future.

It isn't fast, but amayama.com is an absolute goldmine for OEM daihatsu parts.

They have warehouses in Japan and UAE, so postage of parts takes between 4 days and a week and a half, but quality is top notch.

You will need to know the equivalent JDM Toyota model, but the site has superb exploded diagrams.

While they don't yet have Daihatsu parts catalogues, epc-data.com has Toyota/Lexus, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, and Kia parts catalogues scanned with clickable links from the parts straight to Amayama. I absolutely love it.

The broken steering column in one vehicle and broken quarterlights suggest this is so. That Uno they dragged out held its shape pretty well... until it was placed on the scrap wagon.

I thought that, they look remarkably well preserved especially the Mondeo before they dragged it out. Not sure if all that mud kept the rust away?

I wonder if that XM just had 1 LHM leak to many and the owner offed it into the quarry?

Milton Keynes Classic Car Club are holding a breakfast meet this Sunday 6th March from around 9:30am at The Giffard Park pub. The group has a wide variety of cars and all are welcome. This is a smaller meeting usually with around 20 cars.

I plan to be there, probably with the ex @richardmorris Mercedes E320 Coupe.

Coffee/tea and breakfast are available in the pub along with toilets.

At lunchtime I jacked the front of the Rover up to have a better look at the spring situation.  It's looking a bit awkward to be honest.  The spring has completely come out of its seat and is resting in one of the tread grooves of the nearside front tyre - it's quite firmly wedged in there, even with the wheel off the ground and hence the shock at maximum extension, there's still a fair bit of tension on the spring.  I can just about lever it off the tyre using a 3' crowbar braced against said tyre, but obviously that's not going to help me get the wheel off.  There's nothing else suitable for levering against in the vicinity, and there isn't enough clearance to get the spring compressors in there either.  I'm now at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed - not least how to get the wheel off without the spring going BOIIIIIIING and embedding itself in one part of my anatomy or another.  Any bright ideas gratefully received...

Deflate the tyre?

Given the amount of tension still on the spring, I doubt that'll be enough.  I'll give it a try though.

Would tying a strap around the wheel and squeezing the tire after the air is taken out work?

It might reduce it enough to be able to lever the wheel off, I guess the tyre's shagged anyway. I'm not sure what you could use to cut the bottom bit of spring off - plasma cutter?

Worth a go I suppose.

That'd probably work but I don't have access to one.  Don't think I'd get the angry grinder in there, at least not without chopping stuff that I don't want to chop.

This is how I thought it could work.

At least it's worth a try.

Angle grind the spring a couple of coils from the bottom, it will release the tension
