Don't think I've seen a Sierra hearse before.  Interesting that it uses Sapphire rear lights rather than estate ones.

Oh I like that. Would make a great camper.

Today's victim is this Saaab 900 turbo cab my mate has just bought. Looks alright but has a few crusty bits

Akwardish bit under the rear seat brace thingy

Attacked it with the grinder

I did a bit of CAD, cut out a lovely patch and started tacking it in - then it just kept blowing holes. Don't really understand why as I cleaned up both sides and there didn't seem to be any pitting. So it needs grinding back and any holes plugging, quite annoying really. At least all of the holes seem to be in fairly convenient places to repair

Have you done a really thorough check of the front chassis rails around where the driveshafts pass through?  They're buggers for rotting there and it's quite an involved repair to do because of the amount of stuff that needs to come off.

Based on a stretched saloon.

Really?

Don't think I'd like that.

I may run it for a while, strip out the deck, put in a bulkhead and use it for autojumble/lugging rubbish about, depends if I can add it to my classic policy.

I mean, you just need to hope you don't camp out beside a funeral directors and you're fine.

'Ready to go' is perhaps an unfortunate phrase to headline in the sale of a hearse.

Just don't park outside any old people's homes. You'll send the inmates into conniptions.

That was a new on one on me. I was about to ask where, or to what, they'd be sent but though it worth googling first.

No - I don't know a lot about them so useful info. Was busy scratching my head over the backwards engine and chain drive gearbox. It seems pretty solid other than where water must have sat under the carpets on the offside causing those holes. All easy to point the welder and grinder at thankfully

I’d have bet a pint they had used a P100 pickup!

Some nerdy camp stove talk.

Bought an old Kelly Kettle off ebay. Not a bad deal compared to the new ones. Seems to be a Made in Ireland one too.

Built up a wee fire in the base and set to boil 1.4l of 6c straight out of the tap water.

3 min 40 seconds.

The 3kw kettle indoors; 3 minutes 30 seconds.

So the Kelly Kettle is not far off a 3kw kettle. My Trangia which I really like, takes about 5 minutes for 1l of water.

Bloody quick for something that burns twigs and kindling.

What a cool bit of kit.

Id be alright sleeping in it, although maybe slight reservations about camping alone in a deserted place.

That said there must be loads of useful room in there for shifting stuff about.

Flames on the side?

Kelly Kettle sounds like a character in a really shit children's book.

I find all the posts on here in relation to electric cars and manufacturers pulling out a tad depressing. It's like there is little future at the bottom of thr motoring pool. A nice cavalier may be the answer.

Now is absolutely the time to “buy for life” - which means buying two, or buying a shed and hoarding every spare you can. In time, we will realise that 94-05 was the absolute golden age of the motor car.

I decided to go a wee run to Troon with the Fabia. Lost power entering the dual carriageway though. No lights. Nada.

Any other symptoms like rough idle? Or did it cut out and stop dead?

Idle seems alright. It doesn't cut out. I just go to plant my foot in the floor and sometimes it goes quicker and sometimes there's nothing. I can go up hills in 5th and gain speed sometimes, and sometimes I need third to hold speed on the same hills.

It's just as if it's running on reduced power. Was the same just before I had a coil pack die off.

Basically this whole area.

IMG_20220128_193329.thumb.jpg.7aadd2a3709ea28f001671f898c1ad4a.jpg

It fills up with silt, grit and general crap and the rots from the inside out.  By the time you can see it it's already too late.  Being something that only gets poked from underneath by the MOT tester once a year, by the time you hear the crunch it's already pretty far gone.

Repair sections do exist I believe, but to do it properly the whole lower suspension arm, track rod and driveshaft have to come off.

To be honest I'd say it's the only really *bad* rot trap on the classic 900 though.  It has a few like any car of the era, but this is the one which has the potential to write an otherwise spotless car off completely out the blue.  It's difficult to get a really good look at without removing the wheel too, so is easy to miss even if you're trying to be careful.

Only issue he says it has is a slight clutch judder when pulling away but been like it the 4 years he’s had it.

My Grandad's Sandero does the same thing.

Our 2010 A4 had clutch judder but not all the time. Started doing it at 140k, Audi said new clutch+dmf needed. Never did it and clutch still working when I scrapped it at 210k.

Just make sure the DMF isn't making noises.

Any difference if the MAF is unplugged? (If it has one)

Cheers guys

Unfortunately it’s sold pending viewing but not to worry! I did want something a bit smaller but this just looks an ideal base for a camper

I don't know, I haven't prodded too much. I know that the BME code doesn't have an EGR valve unlike the AZQ but that's about all I know. It's getting new spark plugs along with the filters in March for the "big" 60k service.

I had a coil go at 56k and had a flashing EML and a very noticeable misfire. It did this before one went too, so could just be a waiting game. I keep one spare in the boot anyway. One down, two to go and that.

I've only got three cylinders so running on two is VERY noticeable... 😆

Do a compression test before you spend any money on it.  These things eat exhaust valves and it's not a nice repair (I've done two).
