Is it any good. Daughter wants a Fiesta or Ka

It's not too bad. The central locking only works from the passenger side, it runs cool so may need a thermostat and it's a bit scruffy but it is Mot'd until October.

I messaged my brother and he's replaced his Fiesta with a SEAT Alhambra, talk about upsizing. ?

Picked this up this morning. V50 with abkut 160 miles. No test. I can hear a slight noise from a wheel bearing. And there is a bit of power missing so something turbo related i think. No warnings up and no smoke so hoping its not massive. Kinda took a punt on it as no car working right now. Paid a small bit more than i wanted but still small and well covered by what i made on the jeep. Expect lots of questions from me on it

It took 3 and a half litres to get it back to max. I'll be checking it weekly from now on.
The oil light still comes on at very low revs. If I hold it above 3k it stays out. I'm getting some odd looks at traffic lights.

It's fucking fucked, mate, big time.

Just google mini oil loss.

What time were you there, captain?

About 1ish... it was mental and I decided not to wait in the massive queue... I’ll go tomorrow instead!

Goodbye dear Merc, I loved owning it, it was real luxury to drive and I know that I'll miss it, especially as it's replacement is a Panda (yes I'll be Fixing It Again Tomorrow - quite literally).

Look after it's new owner, the excellent and delightful @Tetleysmooth.

3.5 litres is some top-up.

Mine uses nothing like that amount of oil.

I'd get a compression test done before doing anything else.

I'm now very glad I didnt swap my Clio for this as I was thinking about it.

Sorry it's not worked out for you, that's very bad luck.

Apparently, in the summer the queue has been known to extend to half way across the car park!

I now have 3 towels on different parts of the interior to keep the seats from getting wet from the leaky tops of the door seals!

If it ever stops raining I'll plug them with the same red rubber grease I used to good effect on the top corner of the drivers door seal.

job 1 done on the volvo, wiper linkage was broken as is usual when the cup on the ball wears and it pops off.  someone had been in there before me and tied it with wire. i drilled and bolted it.

also spotted another bodge which might be related to the loss of power. a hose is also wired on, can anyone tell me what i am looking at here and if its likely to affect the turbo?

Ta!  Don't really need another set, but at that price they can sit in the spare wheel well and one day prove vital!

I'm no expert on these having never owned one, but I found a split intercooler hose (hard black plastic one, very fancy injection moulded thing about 10 inches long, not a straight-forward pipe) on my boss's one whilst changing his alternator.  I taped it up and his car was transformed he said, he was grateful as the garage had told him he needed a new dpf.  Fitted a brand new one (about £60 iirc), the next week and I got promoted shortly after that!

Been looking at an EGR defect on a 2014 Volvo XC60, which has the 2.0 133kw diesel unit. Easy enough to get to, I’ve found the EGR cooler full of soot / carbon - EGR gasses being over cooled I suspect.
The deposits have proven a challenge to remove. I’ve tried Mr Muscle oven cleaner, alloy wheel cleaner (my usual go-to product for EGR clean) and bleach but cannot get sufficient flow through the cooler. I’ve had to fire up my ultrasonic tank and will give it a couple of hours in there. Fingers crossed!

Got the keys to our new house this week, excitingly the garage is a double and the drive is quite big for chod storing purposes.

The ex-bobthebeard MX5 was moved a couple of miles to its new home on a trailer* because still no MOT.  Welding has been done, just need to change out the rear discs and clean up the cylinder and sliders and it should be on the road.  Battery was a bit flat but a few hours on my recently inherited 40 year old charger soon had the dash showing signs of life and it started first turn after sitting for at least three months.

Had a minor panic when modern van was found to be leaking oil, turns out it was my poor ability as a mechanic.  The oil filter cap on the VW R5 engine needs to be done up more than hand tight to prevent leakage, who knew?  Had to put more torque on the plastic filter cap than i was happy with but seems to be oil tight now.  Starting as i mean to go on with the drips on the new driveway.

I fixed a few things today, some types of repair I had never tried before.

Changed a dual plug socket today as the switch was loose and cutting out (we binned our tumble dryer because of this as we though it was broken, ahhh!). I've never worked in anything electrical before but I wasnt going to fork out £100 for an electrician. Spoke to @Tickman at Scotoshite and he explained things and encouraged me to have a go- cheers!

Rehung the cupboard door that the tumble dryer sits in.

Sewed my burst jeans and sewed my son's school jumper.

Nothing car related sadly!

Finally fitted the cheapo new battery (£8.49 inc. postage) to the SS today.  Got a box of electrical terminal things and wired it up. The indicators work again now, so a nice double whammy due to the price and the fact I don't need to buy a relay for it. Haven't tried it enough to see if the speedo works again,  had a fairly epic night on the sauce last night, so not riding or driving today.

As much as I liked the rough looking nature of the bike, it's sort of annoying me a bit now and tempted to strip it and do it up. Probs never happen though.

I will but not yet it had a near full tank, mind you that could be near empty its a Citroen but I will get one when I get some. Joyfully it has proper wheels,  ones made of steel.

I recall his example being burgundy? When I worked in Edinburgh last time around I used to see it sometimes. Unless I'm confused with another member.

Hate to say it...but that sounds horribly like you've run it dry and have done in the oil pump and/or bottom end.

Expect a horrific gallery noise to develop in the near future shortly followed by terminal failure.

If you're really lucky it's sucked up gunk and a filter change will help...but usually being run for any appreciable time, especially under load, without proper oil flow is terminal.

Looking up the car gives a pistonhead thread posted by someone called W00dy

Is it @w00dy

Admittedly a thread from 2013

One too many nights washing up in the back of numbertile roundbread while daydreaming* about all manner of far more engaging things than how many more greasy baking pans I need to clean has resulted in a thing;

Screenshot_20200302-145405_Gmail.thumb.jpg.674b3ce78ebf7c38344640503aa58f3b.jpg

Honestly I should have done it years ago rather than clinging onto computers because "future". I was reading car manuals religiously from when I was very small and even to this day have been known to flick through an HBOL as a form of light entertainment. It's been staring in my face my entire life that I have the mind for engineering and I've completely missed it! I spent hours last night while driving around at work pondering racing** airbox designs for the C2, if I'd had a drawing board in front of me I could have got quite close to a couple of nearly finished (ish) designs I reckon.

I don't know what I want to do with it, I just know it's what I want to do. Maybe I can become the ultimate chod whisperer?

Maybe it'll help me actually finish the pug one day...

Thanks to all on here who have offered advice over the years, even if I roundly ignored it at the time! I'll piss off now before I get too depression thready!

*Is it still daydreaming if it's midnight?

Possibly. You might be surprised to find out how many people are involved in Engineering new products.

It might be interesting for you if you put some key words into total jobs dot com and see where your study might lead.  Engineering is such a wide ranging subject, that a BEng(Hons) will only scratch the surface. What it should do is teach you how to find out and investigate the stuff you were not taught.

Note, the design and introduction of an air intake duct for a high volume car would probably involve all sorts of specialists, from Cad jockeys, material specialists, stress and noise specialists, tool I g designers, moulding specialists, manufacturing engineers, development and test engineers.

Plus engineers in purchasing and quality.

They might work for suppliers, and customer with a risk sharing contract. Or not.

I see myself as a generalist. I specialised in Design for Assembly, then in project managing the purchase of bespoke assembly equipment, then in lean and manufacturing improvement.

Now I tend to do Lean within aerospace Engineering. That is speeding up design changes.

I see it as a step to open up all of the opportunities that are currently closed to me because of my lack of academic experience and qualification. I hope to use it as a gateway to specialise in something I find interesting/am good at.

Re the airbox my thinking was more along the lines of a one off or low production track car, which obviously removes a lot of the constraints. Along with being more engaging than worrying about everything else going on!

So far in normal life I've found myself doing all sorts of things, i seem to be quite quick to pick up concepts and I'd like to actually explore them properly!

I think actually understanding the science (or maths or physics) behind how stuff really works is fascinating.  I remember learning about the science of single point turning and then having it turned on its head with PCBN tools and the science behind using them as a alternative to grinding on hard metal. And since I graduated never going near any cutting process ever again.
