Suspension on the Princess fixed!  Test drive undertaken!  Camera got out to take rubbish video... and the clutch failed at the point I tried to reverse off the drive.  Full report soon.

A bit nippy this morning but merc started instantly at 8am and defrosted slowly. Drove to waitrose, did shopping and came out and the bloody thing wouldn’t start. It’s a brand new battery ( well September) and it seemed very slow to turn over. Almost starting but not quite. Gave it some gas and it fired up ok and was fine for the rest of the morning.

Thoughts? I’ve not used it since weds, and fan was on full demist for the 1.5mile drive to the supermarket. Perhaps it didn’t have time to put any extra charge in? I’ve never had to touch the throttle before when starting.

Anyway, my sister wanted me to try and get a dress from M&S for my niece. Only place with stock in the right size in the whole south east was Bracknell so i headed off there slightly concerned about non starting ( I did not want to get stuck in Bracknell!).

I’ve not been to the centre for years but it’s really changed. Enormous marks and Waitrose, nice shops, clean pedestrian areas etc. Huge carluccios, Waterstones. Etc. I was pleasantly surprised, and even happier when the panzer command vehicle started again!

How far did you drive? If it's done a lot of idling, then been driven gently not very far, plugs could well have sooted up.

Posted

well "they" always used to say it takes at least 20 mins running to replace a start up

Posted

It's not generally as long as that, but that's not a long way off the mark, especially for something like a diesel with glow plugs and a crap alternator etc.

Bini FTP this morning as the battery was far too drained for a cold start. Jumped started OK and got me to Cannock and back, remains to be seen if the battery requires replacement or if it has recovered sufficiently.

I’m hoping it was just this.

Mile and a half ish,

Other thing to mention, is I forgot to put it in P before turning it off. Key wouldn’t withdraw and then I realised and moved the lever. Would this do anything? I don’t think I’ve done this before.

I always thought this and had to replace the battery on my p38 earlier this month when it rapidly lost charge. This afternoon I replaced the ashtray and lighter with a voltage meter and USB charger.

With the car running at idle it shows 14v, so TIL that even idling the battery is charging.

Didn't really add much to the conversation in the end, sorry about that.

It maybe charging at idle, but the amount of current the alternator is generating and thus how much energy is being put back into the battery, varies with revs.

Driving from my home down the a30 I don’t think I got over 2000rpm this morning. When I find my multimeter ( it’s in one of the cars ) I’ll check it all over. That battery discharge thing some of you made* me buy hasn’t been sent yet.

These are a excellent and useful tool if you fancy buying some more tools:

You can clamp it around the alternator power feed wire and it'll tell you how much current is flowing through said cable.

Ooh, toys before Christmas!

Here it is in action. You basically put the clamp near the wire, hit reset to take into account any residual magnetic field and then clamp around the wire. Not as accurate measuring directly in circuit (iirc ~5%), but more than good enough for most automotive stuff plus obviously less intrusive, far faster and easier to do.

rover news -

wheel removed, tyre which is not that old is fine, no cuts or slashes on it so it'll go again, which i'm pleased about.

broken spring - its been broken for a long old while so cut it back as best as we can and put the spare wheel on, cos the spare wheel (a dustbin lid) is much smaller than a full sized one.

new springs and new droplinks thrown into the boot, and the car carefully driven to the garage for the springs to get changed.

plus while digging around in the detritus on and around the back seat, the titfir that i thought was lost, gone forever has turned up. which is nice.

in lexus news, its passed the mot with no advisories. which is nice. which we celebrated with a wash cos it was covered in crud. the replacement panels are a good match, though we have had to use the brand new side light.  the old one on  the n/s was busy turning itself into a goldfish bowl. £120 from lexus AFTER DISCOUNT!!! what the bloody hell does one cost, full price!!

could not have hoped to get a closer colour match than that!

and finally, in boiler news, it seems that it is fucked big time. the plumber was here all day yesterday, we tried new circuit boards, a new gas valve, giving it a good clean, AND it still don't work. and the plumber he dunno what to try next! he is as they say, stuck and stumped. oh and there is no more parts cos the 12 year old boiler is obsolete,

shit, i 'm going to have bite the bullet and have to have a new one, but it won't be until the new year. SO, for now i'm having to make do with the gas fire and the emersion heater. at least i still have one of those!!

all modern things are shit..........

Hmmm, clever.

In other news. I forgot to mention that one of the local car people nr work hav been blasting up an down the carpark in what looked like an aluminium bodied lotus 7. Without an exhaust by the sound of it. Anyway, I got a look at the reg earlier and, despite being a Y suffix, is a September 2017 registered Robin Hood. Whatever that is?

Posted

On my way home today, I saw a G-WAC Disco, with sexy graphics! I was well pleased. But driving, and couldn't grab a pic. Naturally, I didn't have the dash cam fired up..

Posted

Robin Hoods are kit cars from Nottingham originally, hence the name.  Surprisingly long-lived too for a kit-car company, starting in the early 80s and still producing new stuff today.

Good point, thanks!

^^some were, not all. There was a G-WAC Disco on eBay a few days back. Unfortunately not a press car (and registered a few months after the launch) but it still looked the part.

Mind you, any G-reg Discovery is a rare sight now.

No snow here. None. That's Formby for you. It's own climate.

Our oldest lives in Birmingham with his Girlfriend and they need to head to Manchester Today because she has her graduation tomorrow, and her parents are paying for a posh hotel. He has sent a picture which looks like 3 inches to me.

I have to go to Derby tomorrow. I think it's snowing there now ?

Snowing like fuck here urgh

Was going to have a crack at getting the crank sensor off the van, guess that wont be happening now.  Fuck.

In Birmingham, about 5 inches on the back garden fence, less on the roads. I wouldn't want to go very far.

Dumping £2 coin size flakes here in S Wales, but it's been raining all morning so nothing settling.

MrsCoprolalia has to go to Birmingham tomorrow for work. Wondering whether it's worth canceling.
