A friend at college got a part time job at halfords,I used to go in when he was being trained at the counter and ask for contact breakers for a Trabant or a fan belt for a Bond 875

What's the staff discount as a Halfords employee (maybe one for stoopid q thread)?

I changed a headlamp bulb on a Rover 75 once, in the dark, and don't recall it being too hellish. Wouldn't want to try it with a broken rib though, that's for sure!

How much would they charge to change the bulbs on a Generation 1 BINI 2001 to 2006 ? I reckon 2 mins max ?

I'm not really a beach buggy fan, however surely it can be argued that they are of historical interest? Especially if done quite a while ago.

I'm waiting to see how it affects all those coil sprung Series Land Rovers out there tbh...

Found out today that the contract I've been working on for the last six years as an outsource provider is going to be taken back in house by the client next year, and permanent staff are going to be TUPEd across.  This is generally regarded by those in the know as A Good Thing, so we shall see.

The Bini has been throwing up the 'bulb failed' warning light every so often for a while. One of the four rear sidelight bulbs has failed, and the whole unit is dimmer than the one on the other side.

They're made up of a body mounted lens and bulb holder cluster inside the car.

Well, the cluster has melted.

For a while my mum's been complaining that the car doesn't remember some of her option settings and the clock loses time.

Turns out it needs a new battery too, as when you put the keyfob in the slot and don't turn the car on, the display comes up with the 'weak battery' warning, but only after about a minute, so pretty hard to notice.

Alternator probably needs checking too.

Winter wheel time for the Blingo.  Unfortunately, the Dyane's second-best spare windscreen has become a collateral-damage statistic of the necessary garage 'realignment'.

Arsebiscuits.

Drove home from work and thought its and whys people flashing me, well turns out dipped beam bulb had blown, got up early next day as hand to take back 24hour heart bp monitor, easy to change 2 bolts remove grill , 2 bolts ontop headlight (there is 1 underneath but mine are missing) remove bulb clip this was fiddly as its offset , replace bulb, refitting reversal of removing.

I usually replace focus bulbs without removing the headlamp unit

Well I've gave the registration number to the ferry company so it's a definite now, Shonky the Citroen Bx is off to his homeland for xmas. I managed to get European breakdown cover for a year for £58 through Adrian Flux so that's not to bad. New tyres fitted, cambelt and a check  over so he's already now. Two weeks Sunday, can't wait. I've even ordered some yellow headlight bulbs to bring back some childhood memories and instant stoppage by the Gendarmes  .

I did one r75 bulb and it was a compete twat then about two months later another one came in for one and the customer said “ I’ve taken the cover off for you “ there was an inspection hole in the arch liner and it was easy peasy then .

Started doubting myself that I’d missed it on the first one and made my own life hard. Next time it came in and it didn’t have the inspection hole . Was this a project drive thing ?

Mine is a mk2 and it has the hatch thing.

Bini battery is the original (a month off nine years old) and gives out 12v. That’s fucked then. New battery is £139 fitted...

It’s a Varta one. Probably replace like for like, the mother has OCD and is very picky about things like that.

Mine has the hatch thing (mk1) but despite me pointing this out to the Halfords crew they just said 'yes yes sir, we know what to do' and didn't use it! After my heated (grumpy) comment that the hatch is there for a reason I couldn't stand to watch the fumbling attempts and went for a coffee. When I came back half an hour later they had slackened off the fuse box and were trying to move it out of the way.

Three members of staff were there by then. Just use the access hatch FFS!

Eventually the store manager came out to see why all the staff were peering under my bonnet and told them that ' there is an access hatch in the wing liner'....

Idiots.

Update.

The bulb isn't fitted properly and the access panel is now MIA. Dipped beam on the side they fitted is way too high so bulb not located correctly. Access panel has fallen off because they couldn't even refit that correctly either.

Am going back tomorrow for my £8 fitting charge back and will do it myself. Broken rib notwithstanding. Although where I stand with the missing panel is anyone's guess. No chance I reckon.

Gah. Never again.

I R went to Halfrauds.

Well there's your first mistake.

I remember years ago being in a Halfords to buy a number plate as I needed it quickly, and overheard a conversation about them not being able to find dampers for an MGB that they had in for MOT and it had failed on uber-bouncy suspension.

I grabbed hold of the bloke and asked him if he knew that MGB's don't have telescopic dampers, and that the lever-arm dampers are quite hard to come by, but there is a reconditioning kit available for them.

Initially he looked at me as if I'd fallen from Mars.  Then he suddenly realised that he was utterly out of his depth and started taking down notes as to what I'd said.

I've only been back to Halfords once since, when the dickhead behind the counter proudly offered me a Torque wrench, when I had asked for a T30 Torx bit.  FML.

Admittedly they do seem to be a lot shit these days.....

Unless you want a cheap shonky bike or some fairy dust stickers.

I once darkened the door of our local Halfords when desperate for a part for my Range Rover.

I needed an air mass meter and wondered if they could get hold of such a thing.  I knew it wasn't going to happen when the lad started looking through the Laser tools catalogue!

Slightly concerned on the way home as I could smell a horrible burny smell. In the traditional manner I ignored it hoping it would go away. Fortunately when I reached a bit of road with street lighting I discovered it was the smoke coming from the exhaust of the BMW in front, the sealed glow worms on the Land Rover were not bright enough to show it

I'm no expert on paint, but that rear door isn't quite the same shade.
