Tonight's Autoshite news on the Pug 106 front is that it appears to have shat its waterpump seal.  At first I thought it was just getting colder as I headed north, half an hour later I decided that I too was cold: the heater, though, had decided that there was no more heat to give.  I stopped a further 10 miles on, off of a motorway junction (it was the first time I had a chance to stop), had a pee behind the car and nearly regretted it as the engine took over 3 litres - including the contents of my thermos flask! - to get back to some sort of coolant level.

Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow afternoon...?

After a number of misadventures culminating in a meet-up in a betting shop in Wapping, I now have possession of an Alfa Romeo. Money shot:

It runs very sweetly and looks very shiny and got me across the middle of London and home to Wales in considerable comfort and style. And has a few minor electronics niggles to sort out, just so I can say it's got character.

Arny shark in shit service after they have your money shocker.

My new X-trail only had 1 working fob,the second damaged inside possibly by the previous owner as the button was damaged.

The car was booked in to Arny for the wednesday before christmas,we arrived around 9am to be told there was no fob ordered as it needs to go to a Nissan dealer for that.

Yeah we know but you booked it in here, you were going to take it to Nissan, this was organised so there was no need for courtesy a car as we were both on holiday.well we can't do it.The lass on reception even told Mrsv8 that she had not booked the car in even when she booked it in with the same receptionist.Home we went a little peeved.

So we wait till xmas is out of the way and ring Arny.It needs to go to a Nissan dealer for that,no shit sherlock. So book it into a dealer tell us were and when and we will take it to the dealer. Booked in for today at 13.00.

Mrs V8 rang the dealer just to check that the fob is there and it can be done in a hour.

The dealer had the fob but no name for who it belongs to just a reg number of a car booked in and unaware of the hour to hour and a half she had between meetings and school run.

When she got to the dealer the service reception was waiting with seat covers and the new fob.Our lass said she was going to nip over to kfc over the road, reception told her there wasn't a crossing over the carrige way so dropped her off and collected her when the car was ready.14.20 the car was finished and washed.

Very nice..not sure I'm brave enough to try a cheap Alfa, and I've had P38's

Patience, friend - that's next week (hopefully). I had a common sense bypass for Christmas.

Can one of you R8 lickers give me a few pointers on what to be looking for when viewing tomorrow, rust etc? More for Old Man's piece of mind really - I know the rear arches go (typical Ronda), but is there anything else, rust, mechanical or otherwise? Don't need kettle pointers as it's OMG HUNDA ENGIN.

SUVs really are stupid. Needed to get gas today. Did I take the MG? I did not. When it comes to loading in heavy stuff, the Honda really is superb.

Though I really must do something about the transmission. I know I've been saying that for over 3200 miles now, but it's still true. Still revving up unacceptably on downshifts.

Oh, and a forgotten pic from yesterday. Nissan Vanette towing a Citroen Dyane. Living the dream or what?

The Honda D16 can suffer from cooling issues as well, they have a small coolant capacity and terrible cardboard radiators like most Japanese engines.

Watch for burning oil on the overrun. Personally, I don't rate it much as an engine, but maybe my 416 was a bit of a duffer.

I found mine quite thirsty and slow.

Further investigations into the People's Car's slow cranking from cold that was the reason for the low price tag.

First I checked the glow plugs. They are easy enough to remove so I used the crude method of connecting them and seeing if they glow. All four were dead, so were replaced with 80% of the dead V70's plugs, which passed the same test.

That made it worse if anything. Next I checked the voltage at the starter, the glow plugs dragged it down and cranking dragged it down even more- and produced quite a lot of heat. I removed the main feed cable and found that the terminal was a bit loose. I tightened it, refitted the main feed cable and all seemed well.

It's the nut between the terminal and the solenoid that was loose, so full power wasn't getting through, even though the nut holding the terminal itself on was tight. Somebody has suspected problems in this area before because that yellow crimp terminal isn't standard. All that wire does is energise the solenoid so it pretty much either works or doesn't.

It was treated to new fuel and air filters. The air filter wasn't too bad but I've a feeling the fuel filter had been there a long time, people don't seem to see them as consumables.

It'll be getting an oil change soon. I've never dealt with those paper element oil filters they have now. Do I have to use a proper tool to open it or will the tool I use for spin on filters do?

Popped over to the paint shop for Barry to examine the paint problem with the Mercedes. He says it looks like the metal primer coat has probably not been totally dry when the top coats went on and has reacted with the lacquer.

He is hoping a polish will fix it. He had a go with a sanding block and farecla on a small section followed by an orbital pad which seems to have fixed it. So is having it back next week to do the whole lot.

Oh, and he was swamped with rover 3litre coupes for some reason - two inside and a parts car outside. Plus a pagoda being welded up.

/\ Does it not have a hex on the top so you can use a socket ?

I don't think so, the top is kind of the same shape as the end of a spin on filter, but made of plastic.I think the tool I have will probably do the job but the proper tool will be better.

Glad to see it was a simple fix re stsrting

It's not fixed until it starts from cold tomorrow morning, it's reasonably promising though.

Also went out in the 2cv this morning to do my weekly shop as I couldn't be bothered to defrost the Mercedes. Started first time after about six weeks under cover. Parked right next to the entrance and three people passing by said how lovely it looked. One woman said she had one years ago. On the way down I did see a three box shape nova ( f reg I think?).

It struggled first time when I left, so there seems to still be something wrong

Did a little bit of shite fettling today. Oil and filter change on the green mercedes. Triple qx (ecp own brand) 5w40 fully synth. Previous mb ownership had me reaching for the 13mm socket before I even had the undertray off. Also fitted a new crankcase breather hose as the old one was split and spraying/ venting breather fumes and crap all over the engine bay. Cleaning up that and fitting a new star ( the old one fell off on the way home from collecting the car) rounded the fettling off. I left the windows down to air out the cabin as I had a tame local valetter give the interior the once over on Friday, which has made a huge difference to how it looks inside (and smells) Like lots of cheap estate cars its been latterly used as a van/ general mobile shed by the looks of things!

After that I took the mondeo out for a spin in the late afternoon sunshine.....

Cheers for the advice.

This doesn't bother me too much, for one it's a cheap first car so you can't ask for the moon on a stick, and also we've had two Civics with D14s (one auto) and we really liked them - we preferred the auto over the manual as well. They only have 89bhp, so the 108 of a D16 should be more than enough.

2 people test, put a jump lead straight to the glow plugs for 20 seconds, second person turns key once cable holder yells clear, takes too long to do it on your own

This guy just won my 5 series on ebay, anyone care to place bets on the likelihood of him turning up?

One week on...

It seems to be impossible to sell anything first time on on eBay.  I think when bidding on high value items they should make the bidder put a 50 quid or so deposit in something like escrow to ensure they're serious. It would cut out the cretins.
