Wolseley ones are even betterer and with a lighting up radiator badge you'd be cock of the walk. Unfortunately by 1938 the styling went all stodgy and it was all over.attachicon.gif$_1.JPG

This Morris 14 is now on eBay with more upmarket wood an tings, too much for me at 11000 but it beats me how regular folk can spunk the same amount on used fiesta.

though i will never have either the money needed to buy one, or the balls needed to take on a 60-odd year old car,

some MG's interiors had real neat details, with octagonal clocks, such as these

MG%20YB%20saloon_otley%20vintage%20trans

and MG YB saloon, and this

1954_MG_TF_1250cc_58HP_4Cylinder_ofJSW_I

an MG TF (a proper '50s one)

Well, the new key for the MG ZT saga continues. Seemingly BMW are charging well North of £200 now for a replacement that has to be 'ordered from Germany and takes ages' blah blah. No.

Found a company 15 miles ish away that will supply an original Valeo key, cut it and programme it to the car for £145. Need to take the car and will take an hour or so to do. Costly and unforeseen, but hey ho. After the trauma of being (briefly, thanks Ultrawomble for being so helpful!) stuck at Preston when I stupidly dropped my key in Ultrawomble's boot the need for another key became apparent.

Gah, modern keys really chaff my pisspipe.

I know its a tired phrase here to say things were better in 1986, but yeah....remember when getting a duplicate of any key, whether car, household or industry involved a trip to that hardware store on the highstreet where a gruff old codger with a brown work coat and Marty Feldman eyes would snatch it out your hand, sight down it with his left then right eye (which involved moving it 3 feet side to side), would without hesitation snatch a blank off a hook among several hundred on the wall, run it through the machine in 9 seconds and charge you four quid..... Granted most cars could be unlocked with the flat bit of your jacket zip, but anyway.......

Now its a trip to the dealership where the LED mood lighting system built into the front of the parts counter is worth more than your whole car and they demand V5, EKA, some other anacronyms you dont understand, a signed attestation from the midwife who delivered you and a character reference written by the Pope. It takes a fortnight and costs you half a weeks wages.

Progress can get bent.

Its getting to the point where a modern having only one key is...well not quite a deal breaker, but gives serious pause for thought.

Same issue here, only 1 key. Keys by post cut a new one which fits perfectly for 15 quid. They make it from a photo..I didn't believe it but it's a perfect fit. Guy on the mg/ rover forum is making a new chip for 45 quid, but have to send him the EWS. Remote can be done with TOAF, and I got one from the scrappies for nowt, so a working key for 60 quid.

Am in France at the moment. Leisurely drive over to the hotel in Thierache during which time I spotted :

A field of three visas- just shells by the look of them though

A BX image in use

A Citroen c6

Loads of xantia and c5s

A couple of w124 diesels

Not much else of note old car wise, but

Tons of Dacias - definitely a sales success here.

Oh and thought I'd see how well the merc accelerated away from the peage toll. VERY! I think it got to 70 in second gear at 5,600 rpm before changing up and definitely got to 100ish in third when it changed to 4th. We won't be doing that again though-I'm sure the fuel gauge made a visible lurch!

Are you sure? I met a parrot once who was fluent in German. I was in Bavaria at the time though

Our local locksmiths will cut most keys if you have a blank for them to copy it onto, good for opening the doors should you lock them working one in the car.....remember oilling the locks is a service item..

^^^^

Or get the blank cut, remove the transponder chip from the original and tape it to the receiver by the lock barrel and start the car with either the original or the replacement. Or a screwdriver, but you cant win 'em all etc etc....

Just what I was going to post

Can't do that on a 75, so I've been informed...seemingly won't allow you took the doors. Not tried it,but will when I get time. Also if you get a key cloned, it will go out of sync after a while, again so I have been told..

As alluded to in the tat thread, I collected this R8 dizzler tonight.

It's quite odd driving a Rover with that familiar sound of an XUD up front. Goes really well though especially when the turbo kicks in just below 2500rpm, but stopping is less great as the brakes are alarmingly shit, so that will need looking at. Hopefully they just need a bleed rather than the master cylinder being fucked.

It won't stay with me long, but as always it's fun to try different things. It came with 3/4 tank of dizzle so it's likely I won't have to fuel the thing either! I'll probably lend it to my Dad for a bit as his 416 GTi with the reliable Honda engine is currently broken. It cut out on him last week leaving him stranded, and has also suffered cold start issues. I reckon it could be the ignition module as they're a known weak point, or the solders in the fuel relay may have dried out again (I re-soldered them when it was mine a few years back but won't harm doing them again).

Also, I need to sell something to make room for this, potentially:

I wasn't supposed to buy any more cars until I've got the Rancho on the road, but this is about the only thing left on my all-time must-have bucket list.  And it's cheap (possibly for a good reason, but even so).

No Gamma Coupe for me - listing closed early before RobT and I had a chance to go and see it. Oh well.

All well and good ...until invariably the card buttons breaks and you need to use the little key out of the card to get in the door ;)

Nice! A French/Japanese/British cooperation. What could possibly go wrong? Nothing, they are good cars.

It got me home which is always a bonus!  As well as the poor brakes the heater is a bit rubbish, so hopefully a flush and new thermostat will sort that.  Otherwise that's two cars I've got with no heat.

Posted

Try looking at the vacuum booster pump for the brakes- Father LabRat had a 218td years ago and the brakes on that were shite.

Turns out the diaphragm in the pump had failed, I think Peugeot wanted £10 for a new one and all the fixings.

Pfft, details.

Besides on mine it wasn't the buttons that broke, but the battery connectors to the circuit board as they are an obvious weak spot when you open one.

Had a catch up with an old mate in the pub last week, I knew his ex missus had an old Herald 13/60 that she'd started to strip down for a resto, soon after that she got caught cheating on him and fucked off leaving the Triumph in bits in his barn. I asked him about it and he said he's sick of seeing it as it just reminds him of her and if I want it I can have it and a load of new bits he bought for it for £250.

Well, I went and had a look at it today, It is certainly a project, meaning it's in lots of pieces. The chassis is ok apart from the outriggers are shot but there's new ones with it and both doors are rotten round the bottom, other than that it looks pretty solid, bulk head is good, engine and gearbox are good and there's a spare 1200 chassis if i want it.

It's a hell of a project for me, more than I've ever done on a car but I think I'm going to give it a go.

Expect lots of silly questions over the next few months.

Some of you may remember Supernaut's old 1.8T quattro Sport, in Java Green? Well that car became my dad's car near the start of the year. Was a great car and he really liked it. (As Did Supernaut) Serving them both well.

Sadly while driving to work yesterday morning a truck veered into it, spinning around and plowed it for about 15 meters and spun it back into oncoming traffic.

Once he'd got the car started and moved to a safe space only to have the driver come over and say "I diddent see you"...

From what I gather, there's a high chance it'll be an insurance write off due to bodywork, but we'll see. For the time being though, he'll be on the lookout for a new car...

I liked that, but I didn't like it if you catch my drift
