Not me. Does it remove the noise of a cross channel ferry parking up in my drive?

It's a specific issue where only the cooling fan only works at high speed

So when the a/c is on (when the low speed fan is supposed to be always on) you get an effect where you have no fan, then 100% fan for 10-20 seconds as the ac needs to emergency cool, then nothing for 30 seconds... Rinse repeat.

Very noisy at 100% those fans! But I'm afraid it won't do anything about the cdti lump noise :)

ZING!

I saw one of them at the classic car thing at Crathes yesterday. :D

I see why it has OMGHGF. There's no airflow to the engine because of that stupidly placed spare wheel! :P

I find myself wondering what vital function that coke can is doing too.

The likely cause of OMGHGF is the waterpump which i reckons failed.

I think the coke can is acting as part of the crankcase vent system as theres some advisories about it from 6 years ago:

Test date14 August 2009

Test Result: Fail

Odometer reading162,433 miles

Reason(s) for failure

Brake pedal anti-slip provision worn smooth (3.3.A.1b)

Front Windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively (8.2.2)

rear brake application uneven (3.7.B.2)

Nearside Front Upper Suspension arm fractured (2.4.G.1)

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive (7.3.B.1a)

Exhaust emissions hydrocarbon content excessive (7.3.B.1b)

Advisory notice item(s)

horn tone becoming rough

various HEAVY engine oil leaks, oil dripping to floor,HAZZARDOUS to other road users!!!!!!!!!!

crankcase breather system vented to atmosphere!

nearside front brake pipes on inner wing becoming rusty

both front upper wishbones corroded, almost to excess!

play nearside front hub bearing becoming excessive!

Interestingly 10months later it was presented for a test again and passed with advisories for an exhaust leak, discs and horn tone, but showing 114,452 miles less on the clock.

I look forward to reading more on the SS1 and what it's like to live with.  An appealing bit of design very much of its time and not a car you ever see in the wild now.

Early Maestro stalks, early Metro clocks, Metro/Maestro interior door handles and buttons but Ford Scrote mk3 heater knob?

Edit: looks like mk3 scrote wheel with a different boss and possibly heater vents too.

Verdicit: CLASS.

Wish I'd spent more time with/on my SS1. Wasn't a galvanised one though.

Spotted a Triumph Acclaim on the M1 today so gave it a thumbs up as I passed :D

Oigionaly a 1300cc its now got a 1.6 in there.

So someone removed a perfectly fine running 1300 and replaced it with a 1600 with OMGHGF?

I guess in Autoshite terms, that's an upgrade.

Who designs a sports car such as the SS1 and fits arguably one of the worst engines ever made?

Any way it's not an engine - it turns oil and petrol into sludge. It's a sludge machine.

I went to a local vintage (ie not vintage at all) show today. Parked the Jag up next to an actual Sherpa Sports!

Sherpa pick-up chassis, Ford Sierra 1.8 turbo diesel and five-speed gearbox. It's bloody ace and I wish I'd taken more photos of it. Sadly, I got distracted by ice cream.

There was more WIN lurking in the car boot section. He even brought this in for the 'vintage' parade.

It would appear that my Umm has left Norfolk, B-I-L is driving it home after having a weekend away.

This means I should get chance to check it over next weekend and I might even fix a couple of things before SF, leaking rad is top of the list.

Finally managed to get some scans of some old photos of my dads cars today  :-D  Not seen these photo's for many years so its great to see them again and remember some of the old cars when I was a kid.

The first and my fav is this Rover SD1 2600 Manual in Atlantis blue. This photo was taken outside our old house on the day of purchase in early/spring 1987, it came from Chelmsford Car Auctions and I was much excited to go in this for the first time   8)  but sadly written off the following year and officially scrapped in Oct 1988  :-(

Then came the Granada, another lovely car and not that old at the time. A 2.3 LX manual with some 80s mods like the Hella grill and 'Special' badge, also had a non factory sunroof fitted. Yes THAT IS ME! standing next to it in (I am guessing summer 1989)  8)

Fast forward to the 90s and there was this D reg Carlton 1.8 GL Manual with CD alloys

Then this facelifted J reg 1.8 GL Manual

Then another Rovvvaaaaa, this 820 cockpisspartridge which didn't hang around for long, abit of a money pit by all accounts

Your dad liked his big barges then Stephen!

They look great Stephen! I did a bit of an 'oooooh' when I saw the 820. They are all money pits, ask me how I know.

LOL!!

Really lovely car though. I cant recall the whole 820 story in detail but it was a case of trading it in and getting rid quick.

Top stuff! I'm not the only person in Essex whose Dad traded a graphite grey Granada 2.3 (GL dontcha know) for a Carlton then!

Having dug the Mazda out again, I thought I'd have a look at adjusting the soft top as there has always been a decent sized gap twixt it and the screen rail. I expected a bit of a struggle but....

What an absolute piece of piss! Took about two minutes, no tools required and now fits pretty well.  :)

After no interest here i'm scrapping a working 306 hdi , feels bad but it's not worth my time fixing it for new MOT, kept the wheel trims, stereo and will take out the new battery and leave them the old one.

Why is fat Mike working on cars on wheeler dealers?

Probably because people moan at the fact that he doesn't get his hands dirty, did you also notice that the man hours time scale was mentioned at the end when price was totalled up

Posted

He's been getting a load of beef about it on Facbook too, i think it might be getting to him now!

Massive shame, that. Had it been an estate I'd have taken it off your hands.

In other news, my rubbish French wagon has arrived:

Semi-depression 1.9 DTi engine, rattling exhaust heat shield, otherwise ready to go. Anyone got any RT wheel trims?

Since the sun has been shining lately my mojo has kicked in for doing work on the Oldsmobile. It has been in the (dry) garage since purchase from Ken of this parish. Lots of parts have been purchased and are awaiting fitting. Work done this weekend is not much, but a start! First job was to give the car a good wash. It was manky. Remove the plastic wheel trims and clean the (manky) steel wheels. All cleaned up surprisingly well so will bin the wheel trims and go with the black steel rims. The fabled GM paint issues from the late '80's has hit the Olds quite hard, with crazed paintwork on bonnet, roof and boot. Clearly the paint rectification would cost ££££'s so am not going down that route! Have decided to just restore the car as is, warts and all. Something exciting about running a patinated/ratty yank after all...

The interior has been dried out, the smell removed and the hideous steering wheel cover binned. (The steering wheel was horribly sticky and nasty underneath) Now cleaned up and as GM intended.

After the Olds came to me I initially was a tad disheartened owing to the sheer amount of stuff that needed doing, but a weekend of tinkering has lifted the spirits so to speak. There is a really nice car underneath the years of neglect just waiting to be let loose. Am doing all the jobs I can afford/do myself and am saving up for the jobs I can't. This car just seems worth it. After my initial doubts I am falling in love!
