Not a Renault but the Carisma is powered by their 1.9DCi lump. Is it not knackered turbo seals that cause them to explode randomly?

Speaking of the Carisma... Decided that the first day of proper heavy rain we've had here recently was an ideal time to replace the thermostat, which turned out to be a fiddly bastard job as well due to it living in a wee cave underneath the end of the inlet manifold, buried by loads of hoses and whatnot.

Worth it though. The old one (which looked original) must have been sticking as it used to take ages to crawl it's way to a third on the dial.

Aye, I can't work that one out either. It appears never to have had cruise control fitted but cheerfully informs you that it's engaged so will need some investigation.

Been offered another free car! It's a 1989 Alfa of some sort and it's a street away. Needs collected asap but has no keys or v5. It's probably going to be really shit but I'll probably go for it anyway.

It could be one of these, but which? it's in a garage so no chance of just going for a look.

I've been offered a supposedly tidy P-plate 1.0 Polo which needs some little bits like indicator lenses and exhaust repairs for its MOT. Apparently a new gearbox still under guarantee and a new clutch too plus a black box for cheap new driver insurance. With a new ticket the owner's been told it's worth £800 which seems optimistic but I haven't seen it myself. Not at all my cup of tea but happy to enquire further if anyone here wants to know more.

Don't all rush at once.

I paid 170 for my 1.9d polo.it came with a recon gearbox fitted too.

Gumtree market seems to be 3-500 with years mot.

So it'll nee to be cheap if its a p plate;)

New tat will be collected tomorrow! I'm about as excited as I get about anything really, which translates into a horrible feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach and a sort of guilty shadow hanging over me like I've just run over somebody's cat. Hooray.

Llandudno tomorrow for a couple of days with SWMBO (she deserves a bit of time away from work) decided to use the BX over the ever capale Panda.

I may regret this.

Porsche appears to be sold, meeting a bloke next week. What will be next? Fuck knows to be honest but it'll be rwd, sporty, old and most likely fucked

I'm toying with the idea of putting the BX up for a swap. It's fine and dandy but a TD would suit my tastes better I think with its higher gearing. I have toyed with a 1.9TD conversion but I just don't know if I can be bothered with all the palaver.

Decisions decisions

I went there last summer. Was an experience. Stayed at the Grand Hotel as that was the only one with room as we decided to travel away at the last minute. Never been before but when I got there it seemed familiar but that was only because I had seen 'Holiday on the Buses' on ITV4 and most of the surviving cast were in the same hotel.

I think 99% of the people there had been going there at the same weekend for the last 50yrs. We probably only got our room as someone had died leaving an unexpected vacancy.

We had a GR12 view out of the window:

Plus we had to buy some water as you could not drink it out of the taps as it was not safe for human consumption. Maybe if we keep going back year after year, we will get promoted to a better room as a return customer.

This was the bar area:

Based upon my thoughts above, I bet these people must have been going there for so long that their rooms are probably plated in gold with mattresses you would sink in and HDTVs with a free Redtube subscription.

I had this:

Aactually I reckon the girls from RedTube are actually in the room offering to fellate you. Thats the only reason I could ever see for coming back.

I went for breakfast in the morning and it was truly the worst thing I have ever eaten (and I love a fry up) but there were hundreds of pensioners lapping it up like it was the food of the gods. IT WAS VILE. The black pudding was half cooked, the bacon was fat and the sausages look like they were recovered from under the sea there was that much water pouring out of them.

Mrs Oman has a Sandero with the Renault DCi 1.5 engine. On 12k so far, I shall report back in the event of any engine explodeage.

Well that's one place crossed off my summer holiday list.

Ah, the Grand. That's a Britannia hotel. A chain that seems to set its standards somewhere below Betty Mullins combined greasy spoon, B&B and knocking shop. I,have to overnight quite often and my standards are low but even I came out with two sides of A4 of complaints from every Britannia I've ever had to use.

Premier inn for us.

Posted

I stayed in a Premier Inn once. It won't be happening again, nor will I ever eat in one of the attached restaurants that they try to pretend is a separate concern.

Posted

I vowed never to use a travelodge again . Just because the beds are terrible. Always found premier inns ok.

Worst ive stayed in was a chain hotel in carlisle (cant remember the name but was opposite a petrol station up a hill off the main drag into town. ) such a hovel .

I had a 120k 1.5 dci clio for a while.cost 200 quid, did genuine 60 mpg and i thrashed it mercilessly as i hated it. So did the kids. It took it all in its stride, then i sold it for 500 quid. Respekt etc

My home town, if you go back far enough  :)

In other news, this afternoon I will be mostly scrabbling around under the Mercedes in an attempt to remove the lambda sensor.

My aunt had a 1.9dCi fat arse Meg, which didn't grenade. It just fell to bits.

I like me Renaults, but dCi's will be avoided.

Posted

I've just been to see a Rover 75 V6 that 'sometimes starts, sometimes doesn't' and of course, it didn't.

Bit weird really as the keys turn, dash lights come on and absolutely eff all happens, no clicks no nothing.

Weirdly the stereo didn't work, neither did the central locking ( remote and in car switch) or the hazard warning lights, so must be some weird electrical fault.

Posted

Well that's one place added to my summer holiday list.

EFA !

All shitters should read Tim Moore's "Travels Through Unloved Britain" and be inspired by it !

Posted

So you bought it then?

For once, no. They had pre-warned me about the fault and had I be lucky enough for it to have started (and assuming it sounded ok) I'd have been all over it like an all over-y thing.
