Spotted this giffer spec MGB at a show today,it's for sale if anyone is interested....

Engine is Claterted with paint,I particularly like the screw in the radiator, a nice touch I think.

He was a nice old lad,but The giffer repairs and improvements was too good not to share.

If it was up for sale and cheap, and not red rotten underneath it would be a nice project to get it looking decent again.

He mentioned €2,500 to me.

I reckon it's ropey enough underneath.

Assuming the oil has also gone creamy?

Oil + water mixing is almost certainly OMGHGF on a K-Series. Sometimes when it's coolant consumption you're lucky and it turns out to be just the inlet manifold gasket.

But oil and water will be HGF

Yes if it hasn't overheated, the head should be fine.

Any history of whether it's had the head gasket done before?

The MG Rover mobile mechanics do it mobile for about £350 iirc, might be worth getting them to do it?

It's important to do it right otherwise it'll happen again

But I'd stick it in for a test first, if the floorpans are rotten then it's probably a lost cause

Didn't bother checking the oil tbh, once I saw the state of the header tank I just slammed the bonnet and marched off in disgust! I'm now worrying about whether the piston slap might have caused/been caused by wet-liner issues....

No idea whether it's been done before, there's no history with the car and I've only had it a couple of months (previous owner had it for even less time!) Judging by the 70k miles and generally cared-for condition, I doubt it.

I'll probably get a pre-MOT check done on the bodywork - anything other than welding I can attempt myself.

Excuse the ClassicFM. I got bored of the live performances on Radio 2.

Nowt wrong with Classic FM.  Although the last few days it has pretty much been Jerusalem, Orb & Sceptre and Crown Imperial on a loop...

It wouldn't be a surprise.

Makes a change from the John Williams, Holst and Vivaldi they seemingly have on repeat.

I understand the feeling!

Yeah, if the liner heights were either not checked or the wrong headgasket fitted depending on liner protrusion, that certainly won't help

I guess it comes down to how much you like it! I never like seeing Rover's scrapped, but you can't persist with them forever if it's a lost cause.

Although it's got to be worth a go yourself 🤷‍♂️

After yesterdays epic journey I decided to stay local-ish today. Having lived in this area for 15 years or so I can’t believe I’ve never been to Wirral Transport museum before!

A few buses and trams. Even short tram rides through Birkenhead!

Yeah, at the moment it only owes me (roughly) the CarTakeBack value. Any further expenditure will incur the onset of the sunk-cost fallacy, which is a very slippery and dangerous slope.

Meh - if the engine is totally goosed, that's just an excuse to drop a 1.8VVC in there instead. WCPGW???

I was there a few weeks ago.  Some nice stuff but few of the buses seemed to be off-site when I was there.  Tram ride was a nice touch

I stopped in at the Reliant National Rally on Saturday.  It seemed like a bit of a poor turn out but I think perhaps the weather put people off.  There was pretty much one of each model though aside from a Scimitar (Princess Anne edition!)

Got to see a Bond Bug close up which was nice.  I also saw a blue Kitten which was for sale in my home town last year which I was tempted to look at but never did. Looked nicer than it did in the for sale pictures so maybe I should have had a look but would prefer one in a more zingy colour if I was to have one

Oh, I'd love to do that. Unfortunately my (non-)skills only extend as far as the existing engine mounts will allow.

Drove past a convoy of miserable 3-wheelers; the lead BMW/Messerschmitt had broken down and blocked the road. Standard. I'm sure they'll tell you it was fun.

Ant! There are the mortal remains of one in a hedge a couple of miles from here. Never seen a complete one before though!

At another car show yesterday at Backworth golf course organised by the North East MG club. A decent turn out and a fiver for charity to get in.

Wow that looks almost identical to the one my parents had in the late 90s! Beige Corduroy interior and everything!

@brownnova has Birkenhead still got the chopped up German U-boat on display somewhere? Saw it years ago, was pretty impressive

Just tried to swap my Peugeot against a BMW 520d up for £1395. I was offered £800 for the Peugeot to which I then offered Peugeot + £300 for the 520d given the BMW had 205k compared to the 134k mine has. Offer wasn't excepted.

Ah well, still plenty out there to check.

It was totally immaculate.

I went out for an illicit run in the Cav at lunchtime there (still on SORN), it drives perfectly and is surprisingly torque for a 1.6.  No suspension knocks or anything, gears and brakes bang on. The only hiccup was when I was testing the heaters were hot and wasn't heating much air out the central vents. I blasted it up to setting 4 and was showered with what felt like a ton of dried up foam crumbs, and over the freshly hoovered interior. The directional flap seals have likely disintegrated over time, a bit like the Audi. Outer vents work fine and the heaters are roasting so it's all good!

I'm reet pleased with this car like. Time to get a timing belt kit ordered.

Wasn't previously the keenest bus enthusiast, but I enjoyed a trip to the Bridgeton garage in Glasgow for their open day yesterday. I took the 240, which got a fair bit of of attention as I got the last parking spot outside the entrance.

pxl_20220605_111747606.jpg

I mostly went to travel on the free shuttles to the city centre every 30 mins, operated by a pair of Leyland Titans.

It's good to get a run on some vintage buses, it's a completely different level from just looking around static exhibits. Might go along for the West End Festival later this month.

Last year we went to a transport show at the Detling showground near Maidstone. They had a number of buses driving round the event stopping at each stop so you could jump on and off. Never been much of a bus enthusiast, but that was fun.

We got chatting to a couple who had a nice old double decker. It blows my mind that someone is able to not only keep one of those running, but to actually restore it back to good condition. I can barely keep a Land Rover on the road, and these guys are re-upholstering 50 odd fucking seats in material that has the original pattern on it!

Another great place if you're in the Peak District is the Crich Tramway Village, near Matlock. Not a large place, but some great trams going up and down you can ride on.
