Today officially marks 6 months since the retirement of my Hyundai. When I went in to get a new clutch fitted the mechanic pulled me aside, sat me down, and told me simply: "She's fucked mate". The base of the strut tower had totaly turned to dust and I was surprised it hadn't shot through the bonnet going over a pothole. So, it was driven home very carefully and parked up where it has sat ever since.

So, I went up today to give it the once over. Tires were refilled, battery was reinstated, pez was inserted, and it squealed into life. After a short run up and down the driveway I remembered why the clutch needed replacing and how good the A/C is! it was like a refrigerator! Lacquer peel has taken over the boot lid and roof and moss has taken the rest. It really is time I had it scrapped, but I have known the car since new (It belonged to my gran) and I just cant bring myself to do it.

 

Perhaps I should put in a barn and come back in 50 years when its worth an absolute fortune*  8)

Personally, I believe it is savable, but combined with its other issues it would need a cash input ten times its value.

I needed a new aerial base for my Fav, as the other one leaks. The people who sold me the seats saw my Facebook post and sent me this one for free. It's​ really a good feeling when people help you out :-)

Just loading up the 2CV, ready to head to Shepton Mallet, and the Bristol* Classic Car Show over the weekend. Come and say hello if you're visiting. 

 

Rummer has it there is going to be a Citroen LN and LNA there, I would have like to have seen that but it is MGs for me this weekend.

 

If there are please photograph them for me please.

Came back from work this afternoon to find the rear screen of my ScAAB smashed to bits...

Finally got the logbook back for the Astra so I could SORN it, so this was duly completed this evening.

 

I've been told by the guy at my local garage that he can fit me in next week for the turbo replacement, so I am looking forward to getting it all sorted and to finally use it!

 

SWMBO's Hyundai Matrix went straight through the M.o.T this morning, a couple of advisories which were a blow on the front flexi exhaust, and a leak from the power steering hose combined with a low fluid level. It's been like that for over three years and hasn't got any worse. I may investigate and see exactly where it's coming from. The exhaust I may do soon as I'd like it to sound nice again rather than farty as it does now. I'll also change the oil to stop the tapping noise that these G4ED engines suffer from.

 

And finally.....the Fiesta Zetec-S is now officially for sale. I'm not sure if it would warrant a For Sale thread as I'm not convinced it's shite enough, but if anyone wants to buy it then I'm after £475 or nearabouts, M.o.T until August this year, 140k on the clock. Will need a bit of TLC - the advisories last year were for a pair of rear springs and a tyre getting low. The front brakes squeal too but I did put a set of new pads and discs on it in April. I've had in the two years I've had it: 3x new tyres, new front pads and discs, new water pump & thermostat, new rear exhaust and new rear axle bushes. Timing belt was done at 115k according to the service book.

 

I'm also putting it on bumtree in a bit.

Try ford you may be surprised on price, I picked a brand new one for my saph for £34 there's chancers on eBay selling them with omgcosworth tax for inbetween £70 and £100

Not a huge fan of that charger. The back lights look like something done to a 1977 Kustom Cars Mk1 Cortina and that stripe makes the proportions look weird on one of the best proportioned cars ever.

Picked my Mercedes up from the paint shop this morning, and this afternoon spent 4 and three quarter hours driving 200 miles up to north Wales. I nearly turned back at Oxford. Traffic was hell. The car behaved faultlessly though and blasted icy cold air out non stop.

 

I'll be driving the 2cv back down on Sunday - top down if the forecast is right.

Been using mostly old cars for work etc this week, due to the good weather.

 

The 1200 was misbehaving on Wednesday. It just wouldn't idle and cut-out whenever I had to stop, but it ran OK when on the move so not a repeat of the previous problem. Good job, as I want to take it to Shotley (in the dry!) on Monday evening, then FOTU next month.

 

Before I put it away I lifted the bonnet, looked helplessly at the carb then waggled something. It now seems to be fine again.....

The 2CV's wipers refused to stop after screenwash earlier. I had to ask Mrs DW to stop them with her hand. This worked.

I spent the afternoon replacing a rear wheel cylinder on the Stellar.  The weeping old one came off without a fight but due to my lack of agility and unsteady hands putting the new one on took longer than it should have done. Replacing the brake shoe retaining springs - the small ones which keep the shoes pressed towards the backplate - made me curse a bit.  I could not be bothered to find my ordinary pliers and struggled with long nosed ones for a while before giving up and using a mole wrench to hold the 'press and turn' cap on to the spring.  Then came the bleeding.  I have got two one man bleeding kits but could not find either of them.  I trundled down to my local car accessories shop on my scooter (mobility) and bought another one (£4-50; non-return valve type, not the messy spare tyre pressure fed type).  Bleeding was completed in about ten minutes and a test drive confirmed that the brakes were fine and pulling up all square. I've just been in to my garage to dismantle and inspect the old cylinder to make sure it was that which was weeping rather than the half shaft seal. Its bore was rough and one of the seals was badly scored.  As I left my garage, I saw both of the previously missing bleeding kits sitting in full view on my shelf.  I blame gremlins.  MOT next week.  No doubt the Stellar will fail on ball joints or bushes despite the fact that it is driving very nicely.

Talbot Convoy!

 

Local show today, Classics on Show, Stokesley. RichBraith and I had agreed to go a few months ago and the original plan was Rich would take his 19 and I would take something too.

 

A couple of weeks ago a plan was hatched to take both my Talbots along.

 

Going back a fortnight, the intention was to take my Solara to Shitefest, however after a fuel leak (repaired on the day) and then a seized calliper, I ended up taking the Horizon instead.

 

It would appear that phoning your local motor factor and requesting an 'OSF Calliper for a Talbot Solara' results in a response of 'Are you fucking kidding?'

Managed to bag a rebuild kit though, first attempt didn't go well as half the kit was missing but the replacement eventually fettled it.

 

I don't usually do shows, but this was a nice change

A great day all round and I will put up some other pictures later when I have time. Both cars behaved well and Rich has borrowed the Horizon overnight, so hopefully he enjoyed his drive home.

 

After discussion today, my thoughts of buying an Alpine to join the line up are definitely to be made a reality. Just need to find the right car now ...

Gave the Astra a quick rinse earlier and brimmed it with dizzle, as we're off to Holland tomorrow for a few days. I'm glad I booked an early ferry at 9.10am to avoid waiting in the heat, and it's a few degrees cooler over there thankfully. Plan is to do a bit of touring and stay in Dordrecht, just south of Rotterdam. I'm looking forward to chod spotting obviously, and from the pics and streetviews I've seen they still have a few Mk3 Astras knocking about so we'll be in good company!

 

It's dropping a fair bit of oil at the moment, so I've stocked up with extra and replacing the sump gasket will be a job for when we get back.
