2018 Project Resolutions

Recommended Posts

The Herald should have been a simple project to get it usable again but when I jacked it up this year to change a wheel the jack went though the n-s front out rigger. I would still like to get it back on the road but it is going to need weld now. We also know the engine is tired but we have a spare.

I'll be watching!  My L-plate car was a Herald 12/50 so I have rather a soft spot for them.  It was a lovely thing to drive.

1) fix the BMW Tourer and sell it

2) make decision on Alfa Sportwagon keep or not. Keep means change clutch

3) sort through those piles of crates and boxes spread across the sheds and garages and flog or throw the contents, mostly car parts and tech tat

4) stop renting that garage the other side of town as result of the above. £40 a month back in pocket

5) get Alfa 33 back on the road. It only went into the garage (6 years ago!) for bushes front and rear, and stop buying more toys that stop me getting on with it!

6) lose two stone and stop drinking in the week and avoid the blokes and events that make it such a regular occurance

7) buy Chrysler Delta and fit Lancia grille and badges to it, use as daily

8 ) sell something to qualify the above purchase:  one IN, one OUT

9) Sell house, move other side of town or beyond, as we are unhappy and mojo-less where we are and the environment is affecting us deeply

10) there is no 10.

TripleRich might be your man for that for his mk1 coupe?

1, get mojo back.

2, sell the Bentley! Not using it enough (at all) and it costs far too much money just sitting around.

3, Use the Mazda more. I like the little Maz and while it's not practical at all with the dogs, they don't mind it seems. In which case it needs another service and MOT in March and I want to get the back of the drivers sill tidied up - it's not weak or rotten, but it had a new wheelarch including that part of the sill before I got it (due to rear wing damage not rust, no rust on my little Mazda! :)   ) and that outer skin has rusted, which is annoying...

4, move all my tools, compressor, welder, rolla cab etc and get the flock out of that garage as it is £100 a month and damp as fook.

5, Move home! I have said this every year for the past 4 years, but I really do hate my flat and the fact that I have nowhere to tinker. I am too much of a cripple to be able to devote multiple hours to a job each day, but if I could just walk away and leave it all when I'm knackered then I could do an hour here and there and get stuff done. Also, I LIKE working on cars.

6, get rid of the KIA, either sell it of give it away  or scrap the bastard. I don't like it, I take zero care of it (haven't even washed it in over a year and the back seat area could make a tramp throw up!) and I begrudge every penny I need to spend on it.

7, get a Lexus! I'd like a late LS400 mk4 as my one and only and sensible car for when I don't want to use the Mazda,

8, probably get an older Rolls-Royce. Maybe a series 2 Shadow and use it more. This idea is really optional as I have done the RR/Bentley thing and while I love the car(s) I have become REALLY tired of the amount they cost to keep in fine (perfect) fettle, it seems there is always something going wrong or needing attention and I want something that once fixed, stays fucking fixed!

8, er, can't think of an '8' at the mo' I'll come back to you!

I may know of a buyer if you do decide to do this. (Not me, although I may volunteer to deliver it, and may in fact take at least a week to do so.)

Having exhumed my Mini from darkness in August this year I really need to get cracking with it. It will be 50 years old in 2018 and Minis celebrate 60 years in ‘19. What better incentive?

There is also another Kallista on the go as well as helping a friend with his Stag, some resolutions to go into 2019 there too.

In addition to my previous posting I also need to get the ex-Old-Bloke-Next-Door metro mot’d and on the road.

It looks like everyone has a lot of things to get on with and reading this thread is an incentive to turn thoughts to what to try and achieve in 2018:

On the Land Rover automotive side I have resolved to get the 101 back on the road and get on with restoring the 110 before its chassis completely dissolves and ends up just being swept up. It was laid up because of a crusty bulkhead and replacing this is a big task owing to the amount of stuff hung off it - most of the vehicle! Standing outside in the incessant salty rain is not conducive to getting on with it though.

However the car projects have to compete with my boatshite and there is this fifteen-footer I’ve been working on that just needs paint and an outboard motor and I can take my grandsons out fishing in 2018..

Thanks, it’s been with me a long time. It was barely running when I got it in 1998 so no excuses really, I’ve had it long enough to make a reasonable job of it. Quite economical to run too, unless I do something stupid, like start the engine whereupon the fuel gauge goes into free-fall!

Scomadi: have the spare panels 'wrapped' and actually use the bike again.

Vectra estate: eventually get back on road.

Astra estate: replace knackered power steering pump, brave some veg oil.

Focus ST170: leave in field, then move to a barn.

Focus 'Collection': leave in field, then move to a barn.

Transit: replace wheel bearing, probably continue ignoring whistling noise though to be a leaking pipe to/from turbo.

Puma: fix stupid water leak (PRV, I think) sort leak into driver's foot well (same job if I'm lucky) the hit the rev limiter in every gear just because.

Suzuki Ignis: continue as garage door blocker.

Rover P5: sell or swap it, I'm never going to get round to doing anything with it.

Eventually realise having one (badly) working car that's hopeless for every day use and an ancient van aren't really ideal or constant transport.

Job 1: Re-commission L Reg Mondeo GLX and get in good enough fettle that it is my daily driver

Job 2: Get Mrs Egg a reliable car (whether that be a Fusion with a new clutch or something else)

Job 3: Keep working on my 'lifetime' Mondeo base project (there's still loads to do)

Job 4: Try to avoid buying other sub £500 90's tat

Dream 1: Import a 602cc Citroen LN (or 652cc LNA) from Northern France. Just because air cooled and unloved.

I started thinking about the stuff that I have been trying to do over the last two years and floundered somewhat.

So stuff that I absolutely must do next year that have been carried forwards from this year and last

1. finish the 1972 Range Rover, halfway through axle rebuild then I can get the chassis rolling again yay, then need to rebuild engine and gearbox, clean back the welds on the body frame, reassemble, paint etc

2. sort the front inner wings on my daily, headlamp boxes especially are nasty. While I am on the bodywork paint the spare rust free o/s/r door and fit it, then clean the underside and remove old flaky underseal etc etc

3. replace the brake modulator on the daily. need to get the spare serviced and ready, I also have a complete set of brake calipers to go on along with flexi hoses. wcpgw .... probably need to replace the chassis brake lines also....

5. paint the engine bay on the staaaaag, not anything really special, just give it a clean and tidy 2 yard look. anything more is engine aaaaart and i dont have time

then new stuff that I really should get onto

6. stop being cunty, start showing my family how much I love them and fix mojo

Must Do - fit new Minor brake pipes currently in polybag on back seat and get the bloody thing back on the road.

Nice to Do - knock the dent out of Merc's rear door and refit Sacco panel with the nice new clips that have been in a polybag in the boot for 30 months.

Need to Do - Look for any more polybags of bits that need fitting to vehicles I have forgotten about

May Do - Tart up the Fiesta, most of the rust seems curable without spangle-stick attention.   Service the poor fucker.

Will Do - Re-fit the Cowley driver door furniture - every piece of it rattles and works incorrectly.   Probably some of it in a polybag somewhere....

Renault 16 [...] overdue a service. Service parts will be easy to find though, right?

You obviously had a clown for breakfast.

I gave my R16 a complete service, including dizzy cap, rotor, plug leads, the lot.

It ran so shitty afterwards, that I reinstalled the old bits I had ripped out and threw away the new ones.

It's running like a dream ever since.

French cars must not be serviced under any circumstances!

I'm not necessarily in a position to take this on right now, but may be interested in this later this spring. I'll drop you a PM shortly...

- 280SE will be sold.

- All the remaining Rover bits will be sold (well, fat chance).

- All the W108/109 bits that have accumulated will be sold.

- Miss Lette will be sold.

- Dungeon will be decluttered, which means selling off most of my bicycle collection.

- Miniature spray booth and workbench will be installed in the dungeon - I want to get back into car modelling in all seriousness.

- Conference centre with video projection facility will be installed in the dungeon, as well as a comprehensive drinks cabinet,

to vastly improve hospitality at the Junktowers.

- Some improvements will be done to the R16, mainly cosmetically, because French cars must not be serviced.

Of course none of this will ever happen.

- Get the MGB working

- Actually start driving the MGB

- Find/buy a Dolomite

- Find a lockup or undercover car storage in Bristol so I can get away with owning more vehicles.

- Resist buying cars I really don't need (e.g. 2000s Renault's)

- Resist the urge to buy cars just because they're cheap+broken and I just want to fix them.

- If I happen to not make the previous point happen, actually use the car and not sell it on for a loss after because I ended up spending so much to make it fully sorted.

- Continue trying to have kids, no matter what that ends up costing financially (a story for another day)

- Buy & build a carport in front of the garage so I can work on cars without getting wet and also keep the worst of the elements off the car.

I'm frustrated with everything being forced onto hold until I can get my shit together to move house. All disorganised and cluttered while I struggle to find time. I've trimmed down to eight motor vehicles, somehow, miraculously, I've managed to keep five road legal, a couple more can be likewise fairly easily, and then there's this one.

vrgE4dq.jpg

Oh yes, there's a car under that pile of shit, took it apart to do clutch and bits a few years ago, got busy and now will probably be removing it with a shovel. Time is the big problem, I can't remember when I last had more than a couple of hours to do any car work, if I start anything involved it'll wind up like above, everything is just getting the quickest of bodges while I put off 'properly' until later, I only recently fixed an immobiliser fault after driving around for the best part of a year with a skanky wire running from the starter motor that I'd poke in the ciggy lighter to turn the engine over, real clever on an auto. So I'm pinning all my hopes on moving house as early in the year as poss, and a modest property in an area made ever more vile by over-development and crowding is highly valued in these arse about face times, easily cover something with a bit of room somewhere pleasant to live.

So I'm expecting a crappy start to the year, but hopefully by mid summer I'll be back to normal, out of the gutter and enjoying working on cars again.

Thank you for posting that picture, it looks a lot like my garage. And my loft. And my home office. Glad it’s not just me,

Junkman, I don't suppose you have a pair of P6 wind tones amongst your spares?

Do less welding in 2018

2017 was the year of the MIG. Have done extensive welding this year on the 306, Shogun and Wolseley.

Want to get the injection pump fixed on the Shogun and get the Wolseley 1500 on the road, very little welding to do on that now.

However in the last few weeks of the year I bought another car. 2004 Teranno. While fixing the fuel leak on it I uncovered the boot carpet. Bugger. Out with the MIG again then...

I thought I'd pin that picture of Des's workshop in my own shed as a warning not to let mine get like that.   I have just realised, however, that it already is.....

1) Scrap the Hyundai. It’s been sitting for a year now and, in the words of Junkman, it’s fucked.

2) Gets some fresh paint on the Jag. The doors look terrible and the car deserves it

3) Tidy up the interior of the Jag. There are lots of little issues with it that make it look quite tired. ripped stitching, cracked veneer, saggy headliner, etc.

4) Buy more shite! Problem is, I cannot make up my mind on what to get!

Get the Mercedes MOT'd  (and prepare myself to have to pay to get a few things I haven't noticed sorted)

Get the Monet Goyon sorted and source a few missing bits (headlight glass, rear light, stator cover) and resist tarting it up.

Find the time to learn to weld, both arc and mig-a friend has offerred free instruction until I am of an "acceptable standard" (he is a great welder, so I imagine this will take time)

Not to buy any more motorbikes, and to get rid of two of my twist 'n go scooters.

Make proper plans to buy a bike in NZ before I go there in  2019 and tour round for a couple of months, selling it when I leave.

I only have the MR2.

Get the seats retrimmed - in progress

Create fog light in inner tails - done

Fit Rev 5 turbo steering wheel - awaiting its arrival

Design brackets for Boxster S calipers - will be with my mate jikovron

Reinstate A/C

Fit Focal Utopia components and Genesis amp. Sort two 8” subs.

Maybe coil overs, Hard Race bottom arms etc

Fit charge cooler

Have EBC set up and car on rolling road, hoping for 300BHP. Which isn’t asking a lot.

Flat and polish after respray a couple of years back

Enjoy

Oh yeah, maybe upgrade front wheels to 8J.

- Get the Doloshite road legal and tinker with it throughout summer. This needs doing ASAP as the car is sitting on the street illegally and eventually somebody is going to grass me up as parking around here is limited...

- Get the yellow Dolly 1850 back on the road. It'll be MOT exempt in May so it'll be getting the brakes sorted and a plastic Renault fuel tank and will be back to being generally lethal transport in the rural north east of Scotland.

- Sort out the Civic. Not entirely sure if this will involve putting effort into it or selling it at this point...

- Find storage/buy more old shit pre 1990 cars.
