Sigmund Fraud Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 Good work ! Now please tell us that you intend to run it on 50:1 premix for the sake of tradition ?
Saabnut Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 You're gonna have a treat picking that one up, the place is a goldmine of interesting tat But keep your hands off my Saab Sonett!
dollywobbler Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 Good work ! Now please tell us that you intend to run it on 50:1 premix for the sake of tradition ? Alas it's a four-stroke. Can I suggest dropping a Daihatsu triple in for extra lols?
Felly Magic Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 It's not a 2 stroke, but still well boughtificated
Zelandeth Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 That looks great in that photo. Great colour for it. Never seen one of that model up close, be curious to see one to compare to the Ladas and Skoda's I've owned.
MarvinsMom Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 you fuckin' lunatic..... well bought sir, well bought! shame it has the wrong engine, but even so, its a Wartburg!!! plus i liked, if that is the correct word, how you solved the C15 vans FTP.
Exiled_Tat_Gatherer Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 Fantastic looking beast......... as it is 'wrong engined' - may sir suggest GTTi version of said Daihatsu shenanigans if/when such foolery is needed........ well played chap
HMC Posted December 16, 2017 Author Posted December 16, 2017 The mediocre golf mk4 has been a very steady and reliable old tub. The only niggle it has is it seems easy to stall/cut out for 5 minutes after a cold start; easy enough to drive around that. By new car standards it's 175/80 r14 tyres are comically small and high profiled, but that does help it to ride nicely no doubt. What's the obsession with ultra low profile tyres on family hatches these days? Genuinely puzzled. Back to the mediocre golf. It's tyres were a mixed budget set that had seen better days. I may take the family to Germany in this in January, so in compliance with German winter driving laws I've got a set of new tyres. Rather than go for winter tyres and face messing about getting another set of wheels and summer tyres, I went for a set of all season kumho covers all round. They carry the appropriate markings and approval for winter use if we do venture back to the country of its birth in the new year. I disgraced the local MB dealers with it today collecting a few bits for the w202 c class. Parking next to a demonstrator that the golf is worth 0.4% of seemed to cause a few of the car sales people a bit of worry. Maybe they thought I was responsible for the golf's crunched bumper and front wings? Coprolalia and oldcars 2
richardthestag Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 legendary stuff My Aunt owned one in the early 1980s, for some reason it ended up on my parents driveway for quite some time. Dad was amused by it, the neighbours didnt warm to its cold start charms. regularly smoked the entire street out. Went well though. Only issue Fatha thestag seems to recall was the bizarre freewheel mechanism, you had to accelerate before braking if you wanted engine braking. And you would want engine braking. Sold it to a Wartburg fanatic. must have some photos of it around someplace. will try dig them out HMC 1
spartacus Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 I really wish I could get on with the shape of these, as all models seem to be insanely cheap. They don't have a particularly good rep but I'm sure a well looked after example is as good as any other car of the era. It may have already been suggested but cleaning the throttle body can cure many poor running issues.
HMC Posted December 16, 2017 Author Posted December 16, 2017 ^ I know what you mean about the looks of these golf mk4s- they look a bit lardy to me and even after a few weeks I can't decide if I like the shape. egg 1
HMC Posted December 16, 2017 Author Posted December 16, 2017 Semi tempted by a local Mazda rx8 here- it's cheap and hot start issue reported. Avoid like the plague or worth a punt? I've no illusions of commuting in it or using it as actual transport itwill be a toy and nothing more. loserone 1
twosmoke300 Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 They won't start and rust like nothing else. Junk imo HMC 1
sporty-shite Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Semi tempted by a local Mazda rx8 here- it's cheap and hot start issue reported. Avoid like the plague or worth a punt? I've no illusions of commuting in it or using it as actual transport itwill be a toy and nothing more.I am currently in negotiations to swap the BINI for an RX8, so I'm pretty sure you won't hear any words of discouragement from me!! Always wanted one, realise they're a bit of a time bomb. Don't care. The Moog, Cavcraft and HMC 3
Supernaut Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Go for it HMC, we all know what you're like. You won't own it long enough for it to get hot ergo no hot start problems!
Mr_Bo11ox Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 I say avoid, I reckon those are best admired from a distance! trigger 1
Sheefag Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 £395. Bloody £395!!! Car is in Fleet, Hampshire. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/108299252527040/search?query=RX8 £395Mazda RX8 47k Japanese import 2004, service history and invoices. Starts and drives when hot. MOT to June 18. Small oil leak, no rust, drives, blakey79 and loserone 2
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 For £395 it would be daft not to buy it. They can be rubbish, but.....£395. Lose that spoiler though. In the pic of that green Vartborg I can see what appears to be a US spec E3 BMW.
DodgeRover Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 24v to the starter instead of 12v would cure the hot start issues until it got really worn out... Beware the OMG how expensive road tax...
RobT Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 WTF is that handbrake lever about? I bet that gets nicely in the way of gearchanges...
Cavcraft Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 It's one of those cars you want someone you know to own, so you don't have to put up with the inevitable misery and expense seven weeks later. Merlin cat and JohnK 2
Arthur Foxhake Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 The one my brother had lost him, me and RichardK money, one after another. It was fun though.
