The Reverend Bluejeans Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 So granite does rust after all. That’s fucked. rml2345, HMC, Sigmund Fraud and 3 others 6
83C Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 300D W124s are always worth saving, good ones sell well.
Sigmund Fraud Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 The Merc is probably saveable, but I don't think it's worth the hassle if you're not a keen welder. I'd put it up for sale with an honest description, explaining it's already had the rear end properly repaired. Plenty of W124 lickers around, so it's bound to find a new home. The A4 is a million times better than later models, they're incredibly dull but very competent. So granite does rust after all. That’s fucked. The last over-engineered* Mercedes. * Terms and conditions apply ; description does not apply to electrics and bodywork. Lacquer Peel and The Reverend Bluejeans 2
dozeydustman Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 I'd scrap the Merc, or get another W124 and use this one for parts and flog on the Beemer. W124s are still a common site around here (Sussex) and when you see them for sale at the side of the road they're usually £sensible or £chod. Most have been piloted by the giffers and NIMBY brigade that prevent Chichester from getting out of the £sd era. If you want to go down the repair route, given where the hole is you may need to put the body on a jig to keep the suspension points where they should be. Is it worth the hassle?
HMC Posted June 24, 2018 Author Posted June 24, 2018 Does anyone want it as it stands? MOT to late sept, 300 diesel 24v auto. Drives well, looks ok- midnight blue, blue leather, 7 seats, electric front seats. generally good paint, the odd ding and rust bubble, but OSF inner wing very rusty and will need a lot of welding and fabrication, I haven't started messing around under the sill covers but I'm sure there will be rust there too.the rear subframe forward mounts have been professionally repaired- this wasn't cheap, 2 new front tyres and the car stands me at way more than this ( a lot more) but I've had enough- any shiter want to take it off my hands and drive it away for £200? drivewaymyway and theshadow 2
Talbot Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 As massive as that hole looks, it also looks very easily repairable. Not a lot in the way, single curvature panels and good access. 1 day's work I'd guess, especially as the cosmetics of the repair are not essential The spring perch looks to not need disturbing, and the damper upper mounting, although a bit rusty, doesn't look like it would move. Get some structure back in to the big hole at the front first, then keep poking elsewhere. Edit: Just noticed furze ale. I R tempted. Need to get some chod shifted first. If you've still got this in a week or two, I might be very very tempted!
cort16 Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 The hole would be reasonably straight forward but all that rot around the strut looks like a right weldfest
richardmorris Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 The hole would be reasonably straight forward but all that rot around the strut looks like a right weldfest I had similar holes on mine welded for £150 a side. This was easily a day each side. But the rust was quite localised behind the headlamps and didn’t extend far up the inner arches.
richardmorris Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 If there's one being broken locally, would it be worth cutting a big ready made repair panel.out of it? Assuming the breaker isn't rotten in the same place, of course. They’re all rotten in the same place. A simple wheelarch liner would probably prevent it. But then hindsight is perfect.
The Moog Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 Edit: Just noticed furze ale. I R tempted. Need to get some chod shifted first. If you've still got this in a week or two, I might be very very tempted!HMC car sales don't normally last the day!
Bren Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 It's how much the rot extends once all that underseal has been removed - it's brilliant at hiding corrosion. Talbot 1
HMC Posted June 24, 2018 Author Posted June 24, 2018 No I'm the new Barry sheenepeas. Hang on.... egg, The Moog and Talbot 3
Peter C Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 Bad luck buddy. That inner wing rot looks bad. £200 you say? Where are you?
Christine Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 Hmc , can you buy a Viva HB (or HC will do if it's a coupe ) or an Imp next week ... The Moog 1
Peter C Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 Tavistock, Devon. You’re 220 miles away from me, 440 mile round trip. Add cost of temporary insurance and blah blah blah. £200 is a ridiculous bargain but I’m out.
Peter C Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 I really want this. You’re not heading out east anytime soon?
BorniteIdentity Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 Interior is worth the £200 alone surely? Never mind the actual... you know... Car stuff, tyres, everything else. It’s worth more. I’d honestly do as previously mentioned and list it up honestly, and I reckon a car like this will attract a good buyer. It’s not a £200 Zafira after all.
Schaefft Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 Even being RHD and rusty, this is probably still easily worth a grand in Germany. Everyone wants one. Just getting it there is the problem.
HMC Posted June 24, 2018 Author Posted June 24, 2018 Sold to a previous " customer" RobT, catsinthewelder, Sigmund Fraud and 4 others 7
catsinthewelder Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 Thank fuck for that. At 200 it was tempting me badly and I hate German cars. NorfolkNWeigh, drivewaymyway and Asimo 3
worldofceri Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 ... I reckon a car like this will attract a good buyer. That's not my experience of selling one of these, although mine was petrol. I listed it as "rusty" and the 'Mercedes expert' Ebay winner (eventually) turned up and declared it "too rusty" and refused to complete the sale. Luckily AS buyers are more philosophical about such matters. HMC 1
HMC Posted June 24, 2018 Author Posted June 24, 2018 Deffo, Ive had mixed results selling cheap work in progress mercs (over the last 15 years- w126, w201, w140, w123 and w124) on e bay, they seem to attract all sorts of characters.
chaseracer Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 You’re 220 miles away from me, 440 mile round trip. Add cost of temporary insurance and blah blah blah. £200 is a ridiculous bargain but I’m out. Rationale inoperative. It's in Devon, not Romania...! The Moog, Tamworthbay and Sigmund Fraud 3
Peter C Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 Rationale inoperative. It's in Devon, not Romania...! Agreed, I’m a pussy when it comes to kollekshionz. I bought my 200E from a guy located 15 miles from my house and I made sure that delivery was included within the deal. chaseracer 1
NorfolkNWeigh Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 I can thoroughly reccomend collections from Buckinghamshire to HMC' s emporium of Teutonic 3.0 dizzler estates . 503 miles left at 5 home by 12.30 , better than watching Saturday night telly, that's for sure.
