The Merc is probably saveable, but I don't think it's worth the hassle if you're not a keen welder.

 

I'd put it up for sale with an honest description, explaining it's already had the rear end properly repaired. Plenty of W124 lickers around, so it's bound to find a new home.

 

The A4 is a million times better than later models, they're incredibly dull but very competent.

I'd scrap the Merc, or get another W124 and use this one for parts and flog on the Beemer. W124s are still a common site around here (Sussex) and when you see them for sale at the side of the road they're usually £sensible or £chod. Most have been piloted by the giffers and NIMBY brigade that prevent Chichester from getting out of the £sd era.

 

If you want to go down the repair route, given where the hole is you may need to put the body on a jig to keep the suspension points where they should be. Is it worth the hassle?

Does anyone want it as it stands? MOT to late sept, 300 diesel 24v auto. Drives well, looks ok- midnight blue, blue leather, 7 seats, electric front seats. generally good paint, the odd ding and rust bubble, but OSF inner wing very rusty and will need a lot of welding and fabrication, I haven't started messing around under the sill covers but I'm sure there will be rust there too.the rear subframe forward mounts have been professionally repaired- this wasn't cheap, 2 new front tyres and the car stands me at way more than this ( a lot more) but I've had enough- any shiter want to take it off my hands and drive it away for £200?

As massive as that hole looks, it also looks very easily repairable. Not a lot in the way, single curvature panels and good access. 1 day's work I'd guess, especially as the cosmetics of the repair are not essential

 

The spring perch looks to not need disturbing, and the damper upper mounting, although a bit rusty, doesn't look like it would move. Get some structure back in to the big hole at the front first, then keep poking elsewhere.

 

Edit: Just noticed furze ale. I R tempted. Need to get some chod shifted first. If you've still got this in a week or two, I might be very very tempted!

I had similar holes on mine welded for £150 a side. This was easily a day each side. But the rust was quite localised behind the headlamps and didn’t extend far up the inner arches.

If there's one being broken locally, would it be worth cutting a big ready made repair panel.out of it? Assuming the breaker isn't rotten in the same place, of course.

They’re all rotten in the same place. A simple wheelarch liner would probably prevent it. But then hindsight is perfect.

It’s worth more. I’d honestly do as previously mentioned and list it up honestly, and I reckon a car like this will attract a good buyer. It’s not a £200 Zafira after all.

That's not my experience of selling one of these, although mine was petrol.  I listed it as "rusty" and the 'Mercedes expert' Ebay winner (eventually) turned up and declared it "too rusty" and refused to complete the sale.

 

Luckily AS buyers are more philosophical about such matters.

Agreed, I’m a pussy when it comes to kollekshionz. I bought my 200E from a guy located 15 miles from my house and I made sure that delivery was included within the deal.
