Bramz fleet. The ever changing procession of mediocrity. Disaster time....

Every time Ive diagnosed a bad starter, its been the battery man. Dont be a dick like me, check your bat-er-y.

Good call, it might be the battery. When starters have failed on me they haven't been merely lazy, they just don't start the engine.

Previous owner has confirmed it will be the battery.

Should I match the battery and the pump? Or false economy?

Just stick anything with the right CCA of the right dimensions in.  You can even usually get LION big diesel bastards on ebay pretty cheap delivered.

You still get a warranty.

Couple of things I've noticed with this 605.

Gears are far taller than any PSA car I've driven before. I'm used to first gears which scream to be changed at approx 7mph...

Around town fuel economy seems dire. In fact it seems pretty crap overall. Of course, I am basing this on a 25 year old gauge.

Posted

It's supposed to average 43MPG, I guess you'd get 50MPG on a gentle long run but I wouldn't expect miracles.

Posted

My auto averaged about 47-49 in a 1000 mile trip. Traffic was very meagre though...

Its probably me fluffing all the changes though. High revs low gear, I must keep reminding myself.

People always say that crud electrics are the 605s biggest flaw. Well they aren't, this is:

Both 605s I've had have had seat surround plastic break apart when you get out of the seat. I'm not a fat fuck either. It then starts to tear the seat material.

In other news, battery changed. Easy as. Fuel gauge is defective. Put 15 litres in it earlier and it went up 25.

I've also found some genuine biege floor mats, proper 605 accessory ones. I know what my pay day treat is.

So here it is. Took it 245 miles back to its new home today after it lived in the same Cornish town since new. Drive back was for the most part uneventful, despite the obscene driving and traffic on the A303.

A few butt clenching moments when the temperature gauge climbed but it never threatened to overheat. Heck even the gearbox goes up and down like silk.

The seats are amazingly comfortable. I don't have any back ache.

Only downside is a wheel bearing is grumbling.

I paid £750 for this. £500 less than the world's worst 164.

As an aside, if I do buy a dull modern I probably will want to store the 605 somewhere. Anyone got any storage they don't mind letting me use for up to 6 months or so? Beer or tokens for beer supplied.

That really is a thing of beauty.  Looks a bargain for 750 quid, and I do like the colour (not sure I've seen an 11 in that shade before).

Although

Top buyage! Superb colour. Up until now because bond my fave was the blue as in A View To A Kill, but this trumps it! Looks a minter.

Even the kickdown is smooth as. I don't want to jinx it but it could be the best auto I've had, for smoothness at least.

Well Hello! Lovely biscuits young man

That looks superb. Colour is fantastic. Well bought. :)

ETA: What's the little symbol there on the panel infront of the gearstick? Looks like a ciggie lighter graphic, but it looks like it should hide a radio?

It's a frankly huge ashtray and unused lighter.

The atrocious (yet charming) radio is underneath.

Bramz, I have a space in Herne Bay that I pay £20 a month for offroad parking that would be the same to you. Bit far though. Likely to be free until Christmas, only caveat is if I go crazy and get something on French plates :-)

Renner is amazing,

I think I've seen a 5 of that era in the same colour but never an 11, ace find! I get the impression Devon and Cornwall are still fertile ground for varied old tat, wonder what other stuff that would interest us is creaking around those parts.

A very kind offer.

I'll probably take you up on that to be honest...

Looks great! Can't recall seeing that colour on an 11 before, or any/many other Renaults for that matter.

The 11 looks stunning. Definite dibs, assuming I can show some discipline and stop buying random shit every 5 minutes.

Bravo, yet another superb looking car. As said by most above, the colour is something you don't see everyday, but looks excellent on this.

Is there going to be any French model from the 80s/90s which you won't have owned by the end of the year? Surely there can't be too many more left to sample.

Should have changed the 416's ATF ;)

That 11 looks to be absolute class, love it. Great colour too.

That Renault is glorious. £750 is nothing to pay for the sheer 80’s joy that will be sat in the drivers seat of a 1980’s Renault.

As ever the day after a new purchase makes you see things you didn't before, the front door hinges are a tad orange but not crunchy. Some specks of it on one rear arch in the door shut.

Otherwise it's pretty damn solid. Needed barely any choke to get going too.
